So cool to see more and more people working towards 5Ks. Everyone I know in "real life" is either already a seasoned runner, or not into running at all. My 5K training is going well, and I'm looking forward to another 5K on June 9th...and I wanna run the whole thing!

SFARRINGTON65,

yea i definitely plan on walking, not jogging or running, the 5k. It will be my first I'm so excited. My mom is a marathon runner so I know how addicting this all can be :-). I look forward to everything it has to offer!

PENNYLANE787,
With your 5K so close I would definitely walk it. If you are going to do the C25K program you can do the day on your schedule. Enjoy your first 5K but don't be surprised if you don't get hooken on running too.

Hello all,

I am new to sparkpeople and this ground and to walking/jogging in general lol. My mom is a marathon runner and I am pretty much the opposite of her. She does inspire and id like to take up at least speed walking or maybe jogging. I signed up for my first 5k on May 16th. I have no idea how that will go but I walk on my treadmill every night. It seems most of you here are runners but I really liked your group and hope you don't mind if I stick around a bit :-)

take care all!

I tried to run home from work once because it was almost exactly 5K. But I got so lost it took me over an hour!

You should be very proud. My first attempt (maybe - I have PT starting Thursday), is planned for June 9th. But it is all on the road. That said, I maped out my own 5K in my neighborhood and tried it after completing the C25K training (which was all treadmill) and thought I was going to die. Much different on pavement with hills, cars, runny nose, cold wind.

ZLOIE2, thanks for sharing. I'm glad one bad experience didn't cause you to turn your back on running (it easily could have), and that it's worked out so well for you. Congrats on meeting your goal weight and keeping it off, too!

The first 5k I attempted sounds like your experience. It was on a trail and also poorly marked, got lst and ended up finding my way off the trail and to the road and walked back to my car totally disgusted. The run was put on by the local run store and said for beginners but that was far from true. It almost turned me against running in groups. But went home and did the C25k and ran a great 5k and was hooked. Never went on a trail run again and don't plan to, I'll stick to the street. Not to mention the other runners on the trail run were rude and unfriendly. I now stick with my one running partner or just go along . Good luck and don't stop. I reached my goal weight in 2011 and kept the weight off and I know running makes the difference !

Congratulations on completing your first 5k.
The app is a great way to complete the running part.

So I meant to ask: does anyone else have stories of a 5K that didn't go quite as planned?

I participated in a 5K today, the first I've ever tried to run part of. Got up at 5am, ate breakfast, met up with a friend and drove 2 hours to the event.

I ran about 18 minutes, which is less than I'd planned. However, it turns out the trail was actually 3.3 miles, and it was not adequately marked. Some of us missed a turn, got confused, stopped, wandered around with nobody in sight, and eventually figured out where we were supposed to go. The mix-up added over half a mile and nearly 15 minutes to my time! But I wasn't doing it to compete, and it was otherwise a beautiful morning and fun event for a cause I support.

I'm using the C25K app on my phone to train, and I want to run a complete 5K in June...and it will be one that is organized professionally! ;)
