Here are a couple of absolutely great quotes by running professionals that I love about what makes a runner.

If you run, you are a runner. It doesnít matter how fast or how far. It doesnít matter if today is your first day or if youíve been running for 20 years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get in. You just run. John Bingaman

"I AM A RUNNER because I run. Not because I run fast. Not because I run far. I AM A RUNNER because I say I am. And no one can tell me I'm not."
John Bingham, author and runner

I often hear people say 'I'm not a real runner!' We are all runners, some just run faster than others, that's all. I have never met a fake runner - Bart Yasso of Runnerís World

Don't worry about how fast you are! You are doing awesome to be where you are and have come so far and are running circles around all those sitting on couches doing nothing but watching tv and playing video games all the time.

Linda

Last is just the slowest winner."-C Hunter Boyd

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I tend to forget that just eight weeks ago I could hardly get through a 45 second run interval without wishing for death. ;) I have come really far (literally and figuratively) in a relatively short period of time. If I stop and think about how much I have accomplished in these eight weeks, it is clear that I can expect to improve that much in the next eight.

Doing a 5k is fantastic and don't let others influence your thinking. Being able to run 30 minutes is great. Lots of people run/walk their 5k race...nothing wrong with that. It's all about YOU and YOU getting stronger, healthier and believing in yourself. Look how far you've come. Pat yourself on the back and give yourself multiple BIG hugs. Compete with yourself and acknowledge your achievements - the small ones especially. That's how you'll get to the bigger one! Have a great race and no matter what you do it'll be GREAT because YOU did it... emoticon

I am at Day 2 of Week 8. (I am with a group that calls it a "Crash Course C25K training Program") Last night I ran for 25 minutes straight, walked 3 minutes and then ran another 5. I was only scheduled to run 25 minutes. Tomorrow night I will run for 28 minutes and then race day will be 30 minutes. My issue is that I am running but I am sooo slowly. I am averaging a 13-14 minute mile depending on how long the running interval is. I went about 2.06 miles in 25 minutes of running and a 5 minute warm-up walk. It will take me about 45 minutes to do the whole 5K at that rate and I have never run that far before. Of course I will do my very best to make it the whole way without stopping but my ultimate goal is to run 30 minutes straight and then run as much of what's left as I can. I am trying very hard not to get down on myself for my slower pace. I read that anything under 12 minutes per mile is considered "walking" and that took the wind out of my sails. emoticon
