Thanks for the info, LSHAWNNELSON. I'll have to look that stuff up. I got some new shoes yesterday, so I'm hoping with the extra cushioning, I'll not have too many problems. Right now, I'm getting some mild pain on my outer left hip. I've looked that one up, too. I'm hoping that I can continue without things getting bad.

NZGODDESS, I certainly hope so!

Welcome to the team! Soon, you'll be addicted like the rest of us!!!

As for shin splints, poke around the boards here...there is a lot of good advice for preventing/treating. A few things that most people agree on - Stretch! I think that's the #1 way to prevent. Take it slow, don't over do it. If you get shin splints, ice your shins. Take Motrin if necessary.

Have fun!

Thanks, everyone! I'm really hoping I don't get shin splints, though. That's the only thing I'm really worried about.

Good Luck! It's exciting when you see that you really can run, when you have been telling yourself that you can't for so many years! What a motivator emoticon

So glad you've joined us!!! Running because we decided we want to is so different than being forced to run for a sport or a class or whatever. Time changes us and our desires so what we hated when younger many of us find we love now. I'm 55 and just started a couple of months ago after never ever being interested in running. Now I love doing it. It really is a good program. Just make sure to go at your own pace, don't try to run too fast rigth away but build endurance, and if you have to repeat a day or a week don't worry about it because lots of us have. The beauty of it is that you tailor the program to how your body responds.

Hi emoticon and welcome emoticon to the team!
It's wonderful that you are willing to make this commitment! It is hard and don't get discouraged if it takes you a little longer than what the program outlines, (it did me), but the end results are rewarding and will help you become so much more fit.

I don't remember how, but I'd heard of this program before. I saw a sparkmember's page where they had alot of success with it, so I started toying around with the idea of giving it a try. I kept coming up with reasons to wait, like I'm too heavy, or that I need new shoes and a good sports bra, or that I should put it off and start next week. Last night, while at the gym for my regular treadmill walking session, I thought I'd give Day 1 a try. I was so suprised at how easy it was for me! I know that in the coming weeks there will be lots of challenges, but the first day went so well that I did extra time, and am actually looking forward to my workout tomorrow. For the first time in my life, I'm actually a little pumped about running!

I never was a runner really, but I was active in high school (10 years ago, yes) and we did pretty vigorous training on our softball team. We did lots of running bases and sprinting, but no long-distance stuff (unless you count laps around the field perimeter.. lol). I always hated it. I got shin splints and hated anything to do with running. These days, I'll see a pretty, fit girl running on the sidewalk and I'll think to myself "I wish that was me." Now I know it can be, if I have the right attitude. I'm looking forward to sharing this journey with you all.
