Good to hear you had a good run kodiakbaby and dilliegal!!

I am snowed in here and can't get out to run, nor get to the gym because of the roads. I ran on Sunday, so I need to run today. I have a treadmill in the basement, but I don't like it. I am hoping they get the roads cleared off good enough that I can get to the gym later today.

Hey everyone!
I finished W1D1 tonight. It was hard, but felt incredibly great to have accomplished. I started at 4 miles/hr walking and 6 miles/hr jogging but needed to go down to 3.8 & 5.8. Catching my breath was the hardest part, my legs held up ok. I was able to finish it though.
Will do W1D2 Wednesday.

Hello everyone!!! My name is Tabetha, I'm 23 and a Fat 'Runner' too. (I put the quotes around the 'runner' because I am just starting.) I weigh 260+, I'm 5'7" and am so ready to be able to run!! I just started the C25K today and I had to cut it short by 5 minutes but I am so ready for this. My initial plan is to take each week of the program and do it twice unless I can easily go on to the next week. I am just anticipating that this is going to take time. :) I am so happy to be a part of this team and also be a member of the Fat Runners Club. :) I can't wait to get to know you all better!!!

Kodiakbaby-I started with walking. I took my dog out and walked. I first went around the block almost every day (about 1/2 mile), then I decided to go further and started walking more like a mile, then 2, and then 3!! This process took me a year and I lost 50 pounds in that year!! Now, in 2010, I started the C25K program and did the walk/runs just like it says for the first 5 weeks. I am doing a modified week 6 (taking me longer), but now I am running most of the 3 miles instead of walking. I have lost 10 pounds so far this year!

The important thing is to get started. Start where you feel comfortable and then push yourself a little further each week. Some people are able to start running right away. I didn't feel comfortable with that.

Yesterday was W1D1 and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it went. I've tried running in the past but somehow it just didn't click for me. I really find the podcasts helpful and I know this time is going to be different!

Donna - just keep at it and you'll make it! I think you're plan of adding on a little bit at a time is very smart.

This morning was supposed to be W7D2 for me. Here on Sparkpeople, I mapped out a 2.5 mile route down the roads around my neighborhood. Before the end of my run, I kept thinking that it had to be longer than 2.5 miles. I had to push myself to keep going. I got in the car with DH after my shower and we drove the route and it ended up being 2.8 miles!

I am running again tomorrow night and can't decide if I should back it down to 2.5 miles, or just go ahead and pick up W8.

Around the end of the second mile, someone's dog came and joined me in my run. He followed me all the way home. I even talked to him some while I ran. I told him, "Almost there," when we turned onto my road and I was on the last quarter mile stretch. It was kind of nice having a running partner. :)

Nora & KIRCHDS, your posts are encouraging. I will take it at the pace that feels right for me. I just finished W4D3 and I'm not sure if I feel ready to move on, so I might hang around W4 a little longer. I'm determined to keep moving, since that is the main thing.

It is great to hear from all the newbie runners in the group! Keep it up! No matter how long it takes. I have been doing C25K since July 09 and I am only on Week 6. emoticon It is totally worth the time and effort!

I think it is a great idea to modify the program and set up intervals that work for you. I think I may have to do that because I am intimidated as heck by the idea of only running for long periods of time from here on out. I am working on W6D3. I attempted it on Weds and it was just not happening. The funny thing is now when I go to the gym ... I only want to get on the treadmill. Screw the bike and the elliptical! HA! The bike seems like a waste of time for me and the elliptical makes me feet fall asleep. I just want to walk or jog. I really want spring to come so I can get outside again to bike, walk, and jog. Come on March!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon
Happy running to all! emoticon

Wow...I am so impressed by all of you! I ran/walked 3.2 miles today in 45:30. My best time ever!

Candice-making it through week 1 is a great achievement...noone can stop you now!

Birdie-congrats on graduating! Please stick around on this thread. I really enjoy reading your posts!

SJohn-great job. I have not made it to week 7. I am stuck in week 6, but I am still pushing myself further each day and feel great about my successes!

Soothinglow-take your time..do what you can do. Every 30 seconds is a step to success for becoming a runner and that is all that matters!! You are making great strides!

Mommakes2008-welcome to the group!!

Have a good weekend. I will try and touch base again tomorrow!

Congrats, Birdie!

I had W7D1 on Wednesday and yesterday afternoon I ran a mile just because I could (yay!). I am going to start adding more running days to my schedule now. I was supposed to have W7D2 today but it's all cold and rainy, so I'll do it tomorrow assuming the weather is better.

I DID IT!!! I am now an official C25K grad!! I jogged for 30 minutes non-stop and then I walked to reach a 3.1 miles! I did it under 40 minutes!! When I got off the treadmill I was so proud of myself! By all means was this run easy, but I was able to push through and finish!

When I first started this program I thought that there was no way I could finish. Some days I just wanted to quit. But I look back and am amazed how much in shape I am.

My best advice is to blog/journal your runs. Then look back and be proud of how far you got. Some days I thought that I did poorly but then I would read my first week entries and realize how far I got! emoticon

I went from barely able to run 60 seconds non-stop to being able to run 30 minutes non-stop!

Remember the the C25K plan is not for everyone and there are other ways of achieving your goals.

The first time I did the C25K program I weighed about 15 lbs less than I do now, but I was a lot more out of shape. I had to do W1 3 weeks in a row because I just couldn't complete the full workout. It was torture! This time, I'm in better shape, but 15 lbs heavier. Now that I have my arch supports I'm shocked at how much easier it is! I'm going to stick with the plan and not push myself too hard - I don't want any injuries.

Take it on your own pace and do as much as you can - you can do it!

Ok so maybe I'm crazy... I know I am REALLY heavy and I'm worried about injuries, but I am making a commitment to run everyday for 30 seconds. Thats it. 30 seconds. I know I have to start off small or I will injure myself. I walk everyday but my ultimate goal is to run! So why not start now. My plan is to do this until March, and then add on another 30 seconds. I will just keep building on that as my body allows.

Hi everyone! My name is Annie, I'm 27, and I have about 100 pounds to lose! My ultimate goal is to be able to run alongside my 10 year old daughter...she'd like to run track, but right now I can't help her achieve her goals. I'm not sure that I'm physically ready to begin running, but I'm so so so excited about becoming a runner with my daughter. I wanted to join this group to get the support and tips necessary to do this! Looking forward to the journey ahead.

I wrote my own version of week 6 because i can't seem to make the 2 miles without stopping to walk after the first mile. I slowed down a bit and have made a plan to increase my running in smaller increments. I started with 13 minutes (1 mile for me) and then a 3 minute walk, followed by shorter intervals of walk/running, and lengthened the time a bit each day until I make to running 26 minutes (2 miles for me)...that is the only way I am going to make it 2 miles straight. I am just not ready yet. I have to walk a bit in the middle. I will get there someday! My week 6 plan will take 3 weeks!

Being a fat-runner isn't easy. Glad this support thread is here. Week 4 is kicking my tail! I did day two of it, and I can honestly say this is the most running I've done so far in my life.

hello everyone! Well, it's been almost 2 weeks since my breast reduction surgery. I need some advice on where to start back. I will be 3 or 4 weeks out when I'm allowed to start back to running. How much fitness do you think I will have lost? How should I start back into the program? All the way back to week one? That would be so depressing! LOL Thanks for any advice :)

Definitely take it slow, and don't move ahead in the program even if your head wants to. your body needs the time to build up muscle/stamina. keep up the good work.

Lauralee-he is adorable!! I am a dog lover! I have a boxer. She is 5 years old and my running partner!...that is when the weather lets us go out and run. Right now, there is so much snow that I can't take her out! I am hoping they have the streets cleared off good enough that I feel safe to walk/runner her. I tried to take her last weekend and she almost pulled me down because of the ice.

Donna,
I must confess, not a real picture of my puppy, just a painting I found online! My baby was a rescue, and although he looks very similar I was never lucky enough to see him at puppy age. Thanks for the welcome!

I've been on this board for a while, but every time I tried running I was getting terrible outer shin pains. I finally added arch supports to my running shoes and YAY!!! I can run again! I'm on W1D3 now and so very excited. My goal is to run a 4 miler in April.

I've been a member of the couch to 5k club for awhile, but have only been lurking! I used to run for fun when I was in high school with a friend who was on the cross country team and loved it, but I never thought I'd get that back. After buying a really good pair of running shoes (this after like 8 failed attempts with crappy shoes) I have finally rediscovered what I once loved. I'm finishing week 3 today and am not plagued with all of the pains in my feet and knees that I was struggling with in prior attempts so I'm psyched. I am planning on running a 10k in May, I may have to walk some of it, but I know I'll be running at least have of it! Can't wait to get to know you all.

Welcome Christina!! This program is awesome and so is this team. Deyette is incredible and a great sparkfriend! Listen to her advise, she has never steered me wrong!

SLFrisbey-I read an article last night under the FAQ in the fitness pages of this website that said that your best bet is to do your warm up on something like an elliptical and then do some good stretches before starting your run. Check out the article because it even describes the stretches that you should be doing!

Cbil-I can't believe that I can run for 20 minutes and I am a 210 pound girl! I was 220 a month ago! We are all in this boat together!!

Grrr! I can't get the 5 minute run done! Last night I got through the 1st 3 minute run and about half way through the 1st 5 minute run my right leg cramped up so bad I couldn't point and flex my foot, it was stuck! Any ideas from all the other runners out there? thanks!

Welcome TEEJAY2009 and COUPDEGRACE! You both have joined an awesome team. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish with this program and you'll find tons of support and great advice in this team!!

CBILODEAU6 way to go on finishing W3D2! This 244 lb. girl just ran a 2 mile race on Sunday so I can say with utter confidence that if you trust in this program it will work for you! In my opinion (and in my case...everyone may be different) the first few weeks were the toughest physically. As I progressed the running got easier but it also got a lot more difficult mentally as I would fight the idea that I could up my time by _____ number of minutes! Once I gave into the program and started trusting that I'd done the preparation...it just "happened"! I still have a lot of running goals. I ran for time and now need to increase it to meet my distance goals...but I know I can do it now!

Keep up the great work!

I finished w3d2 today... For me 5minutes seems to hard... but it's finally goes very well... I just have to think about it when I run and I'm ok... It's surprising for a 225pounds girl!!!!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Christina and I'm a 24 year old from the Los Angeles area. I absolutely ADORE being outdoors and I love being active, unfortunately, I feel that my weight hinders me from being able to 'go the distance' and endure during workouts and other such activities. Even when I was thinner, I always felt like the fat kid trying to keep up with the fit kids. I would just LOVE to be able to run and experience that calm, meditative zone that everyone claims to be in when they're in their zones. I'm tired of being embarrassed or making excuses for not being able to keep my breath or hold pace while hiking.

I'm so excited to be a new member of this group and I can't wait to share stories with you all!

Hope to chat with you all very soon!

:)

Christina

Thanks Deyette....I will try and increase the incline like you suggested!! You have always steered me in the right direction!! Thanks for all your advise!!

Welcome Teejay!! We are glad to have you. Take your time. I was not able to keep up with the plan week by week as it is written. I have taken more time in some of the weeks. I am currently on week 6 and am working towards running 2 miles without stopping. A few weeks ago I was able to run 1 mile for the first time in my life. I am still basking in that glory!! You need to push yourself, you will surprise yourself at how much you can do....but don't beat yourself up....it is important that you don't push too hard, because then you may want to quit. There is a fine balance. It is still difficult for me to make it that first mile, so I walk for a few minutes, catch my breath, and then run some more.

Good luck and keep us updated on your progress!!

Donna

Hi all - I am brand new to the team.

I am going to need to take it slow as I'm carrying 355 lbs on my frame - but I've always wanted to be a runner. So no matter how long it takes to get to my first 5K, I'm ready to do it!

Just wanted to say hey! :) Keep on truckin' all! emoticon

-Tammy :)

Rejoicing with every pound lost no matter how small...
