Thank you for the tips about camping and hiking! I am excited for whenever I can start hiking. It seems like such a fun way to get in some exercise outdoors instead of just walking. I also run (or was starting to run before) which I find exhilarating but would love to explore more of my area through hiking too.

I will have to check that magazine out. I've been doing some research here and there so far.

emoticon on your Spark success! 109 pounds is amazing! emoticon

Hiking is a great activity, you can definitely start at a beginner level (low/no elevation gain trails, shorter distances) and work your way up to harder terrain. The parks are great places to hike, as they typically rate the trails, beginner to advanced/expert.

If you have an REI nearby they have classes on hiking and camping (as well as gear to sell and rent), but you can probably also find gently used gear online if you look around. Or if you know someone who camps maybe you could borrow gear to try it out. (and get some tips). Backpacker magazine (online as well) has good info on getting out there as well.

Happy trails! emoticon

Hi everyone my name is Bonnie. I saw this Spark Team on someone else's page and wanted to join. In the past couple weeks I've been interested in getting into some hiking. At first I want to do local hiking (I live in Northwest Indiana) but someday in a year or two my dream is to hike in some national parks. My top ones I want to visit are #1: Grand Canyon, #2: Niagara Falls, and #3: Yosemite (I'm originally from California). My dream would be to do some overnight hikes there. It would cost some travel costs and I don't know how to camp right now, but am interested in possibly learning to cut the costs even more as opposed to staying in a cabin/inn/hotel in the national parks.

I have been on Spark People this time for over fourteen months and have lost 109 pounds so far. This is so much a lifestyle change for me and I will never go back to my old habits. I've had so many bumps and twists and turns in this journey, but I'm sticking to it. Right now I'm almost eight weeks into nursing a minor foot issue due to having worn out shoes and bad new shoes for a while. I finally went to a running store after that and got fitted there so have a good pair. After that I also decided to buy the same model of shoe that worked for me for eight months before they started wearing out. They were the PERFECT shoe for me. I was so sad they stopped making the shoe so it took some hunting around on ebay to find them again lol. They should be arriving in a few days hopefully.

Anyway, I also am going to see my doctor about the foot issue next Saturday and hopefully I can get it resolved soon and maybe do some local hikes in October/November. There are some good ones near me that I'd like to try to get some practicing in. Hiking has always interested me on some level and I'd love to see more of our country by visiting the national parks as well. It would be great to have such active vacation plans!
