My wife has never been to that part of the country and I want to get her back that way sometime. My dad is from Blue Ridge, Georgia, isn't far from the southern start of the AT and I have relation who still live there. I do get back that way from time to time. Would love to hike that portion of the AT. I also have relation who live in Lake Havasu City AZ and I've hiked in the Hulalpai Mountains and around Sadona. Hiking does help me stay somewhat fit and along with my wonderful wife, we both do it quite a bit. She doesn't backpack. My trips are a little extreme for her. This year,my hiking group has picked the Rawah Wilderness Area near the Medicine Bow Mountains in North-Central Colorado to hike into. There's five of us and we call ourselves the "old geezer" hiking club. It's a funny name, but we are what we are. We know that staying active promotes good health. ........ By the way, it's nice to know that we can look to someone for help when planning trips and I thank you for the tip.

Thank you guys so much for the warm welcomes!

Trailtrodder - I'm actually about 30 minutes from the NC/SC line, so we do a good bit up there and know Nantahala pretty well. My dad and stepmom are avid kayakers, climbers and bikers as well. She's the current president of Friends of DuPont up there and spent this weekend doing a clinic where they acclimate horses to deal with bikes on the trail. It was pretty cool.

If you guys ever head back this direction and want some ideas, let me know and we can hit my stepmom up for some stellar places to backpack as that's really her 'thing'. She's done most of the AT (in bits and pieces) at this point. But I think her favorite trips have been to the Grand Canyon. She and my dad went out and did Devil's Tower as well a few years back and couldn't get enough of the area out there.

Thanks again for the welcome and I can't wait to get to know everyone better!!

Greetings and welcome to a great team. .... I've never hiked in South Carolina so I can't give you any advice as to where you might spend some hiking time. I'm sure there is much to say about the outdoors there. Most of my hiking in that part of the country has been in northern Georgia and North Carolina. Lots of great trails near Bryson City N.C. and the Nantahala Outdoor Center near there. Great hiking, biking and kayaking can be found there. My wife and I love to travel to hike and kayak and manage a couple of vacations a year to do so. We usually head for Colorado, Wyoming, because of our location. We live in central Kansas. I do a wilderness backpacking trip once a year with a small group. We choose a wilderness area where we hike in on a monday and don't come out for 5 or 6 days. I love to backpack. All of the outdoor activity keeps my wife and I feeling young. I got her, her own kayak two years ago so it's something else we can do together. Sorry to rattle on so much here. Anyway, glad you're with the team and you'll find a ton of support within this group. Good luck with all your healthy endeavors. We're here for ya!

One of my daughters lived in Mesa outside Phoenix too for about a year. I was over there several times but didn't get to really hike. I had a stroke on Halloween 2013 and my balance is off but I'm hiking or walking as much as I can and building up. Can't hold me down LOL. I was in St. Joseph's hospital in Phoenix from Oct 31 when I was flown there from Silver City until Nov 21 when I was transferred to a hospital in downtown Dallas for inpatient rehab and monitoring. Got out Dec 3rd. My oldest son lives near Dallas so it was closer for them and I stayed with them for a while. Now I'm moving into my own apartment. I did a lot of walking or hiking the past 6 weeks with a friend in Kauai, Newport Beach, San Diego Safari park, Yosemite, and Devils' Postpile in Mammoth Lakes area as well as some other local hikes. My friend leads some hikes on conservancy land in southern CA where only guided hikes are allowed and there are several a day. We did several of those while there too. She had me really moving LOL. I know outside of Phoenix is the Superstition Mountains and also other places I drove through but didn't get to hike. Sounds like so much fun both there and at your place!

Thank you for the welcome, Ronda!

Linda - She lives outside of Phoenix - they almost moved to Show Low last year, but wound up staying put.

It's great for her because she's got all of the convenience of the city, but a couple hours drive and she's got a ton of options for hiking and all kinds of interesting things. So i'm looking forward to visiting!

We do have some amazing hiking and other outdoor recreation where I live. Lots of rock climbing and the DuPont Forest is actually well on its way to becoming a national destination for mountain bikers.

I love it here - just need to get back out and explore it some more!

I hope you have a good time with your friend if you get to go to AZ. What part would you go to. I've been to several places over that way. Tucson was about 4 hours away and my two grown daughters both lived in that area for a while and I made numerous other trips even when they weren't living there for hiking/shopping, etc. A few years ago it had been a wet winter and the hikes to some of the falls in the foothills around there were amazing, like Sabino Canyon and Ventana canyon. I have an online kind of friend that writes about her hikes in that area often too, names SUNNYARIZONA. And one daughter lived in Show Low for a while, and I've been to the Alpine area and also the Flagstaff area, as well as the Grand Canyon. I've driven through some other areas too. You also sound like you have great hiking where you are too!

Thank you for the welcome Linda!! Your trip sounds amazing. I have a good friend in AZ so I am hoping to make that an excuse to go visit and do some hiking out west. I have never been. I am also wholly intrigued but the Pacific Northwest and would love to go explore there.

Happy hiking!!

Glad you've decided to get back out there and do it! I just came from a 6 week vacation in Southern California where we did all kinds of things, including hiking and walking and even went to Yosemite for a few days (stayed at an awesome bed & breakfast called Sierra Mountain) about 25 miles or a little less from a couple of entrances. Sort of in the middle of two. We were up there Tuesday, Wed, and Thursday then went through the high Sierra's of Yosemite on our way over to Mammoth Lakes for another full day of fun. THen I came back home to pretty flat Texas where I have to find places to hike. Until the end of October I was in southern New Mexico on the edge of the Gila National Forest and had lots of places to hike in about 10 minutes to an hours depending on which way I went into the mountains! I miss hiking too and hope you have a great time! I'm 59 by the way. My friend is 68 and we're never too old to hike! She wants to do more backpacking too, which I haven't done. She's the one in California and I think I'm jealous LOL! A great way to bring your kids up too!

Hey folks -

Saying hi from Upstate S.C. here.

37YO mom of two - looking to get back into my outdoors activities.

As a teenager I managed an indoor rock gym as well as did a lot of hiking and camping - that stayed with me until my early 20s - so after about a 15 year hiatus, I'm itching for this to really be part of my life!!

Each year my dad and stepmom with a group of friends make the hike to Leconte Lodge in TN. I've joined in the past two and will go again this year.

I also want to plan a trip to Hike Inn - as I've heard wonderful things!

If anyone has great suggestions for places I could hike/camp with the kiddos I'm all ears - at the moment we typically stick to Table Rock, SC and DuPont Nat'l Forest.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone - hike on!

Jogging my way to a slimmer and healthier me.
