I did Whitney as a day hike (the first time) and did get a touch of the altitude sickness...stayed up at the top a little too long waiting for the rest our our group. The second time we took a week and hike part of the JMT from Shepherd's pass. Both were great experiences!

If you train right you should be able to do it, good luck to you!

And welcome to the team!

Wow, you must be a SUPER avid hiker! Whitney is no joke! I had originally planned to put my name in the lottery when it opens up in Feb, for a date in August, and I was going to do it in 2 days. Maybe I will still put my name in the lottery. Who knows. If I can get some serious hiking into my schedule in the Spring then I might actually be ready by August!

Hey, if you want to do Whitney as a day hike, let me know! I live in Central Calif. and I'm always looking for new hiking partners who want to burn the calories on some long hikes :) It is usually easy to pick up a day permit for a weekday.

Hello all! So I'm an interesting adaptive/hybrid type of Hiker. While I prefer hiking mountains and conquering new elevations, I don't necessarily have the time to do that that I used to. I've kind of adapted my activities, then, to mud and obstacle races, which involve a good bit of hiking, and also running and upper body. I still yearn for the trails, though. I had the goal of hiking Mt. Whitney next summer and was on my way but my schedule shifted. It's still a goal, just maybe not this upcoming summer.

Anyway, as I see my schedule opening up a bit I'm hoping to have more time to hike and I'm hoping to get some joy and motivation from reading all your posts. Happy Hiking!
