Thankyou for the warm welcome Kayotic ! yes Im in PT I actually just baught an exercise ball yesterday to strengthen my core at home. I was just trying out squats with it on my own and I can really feel the muscles in my lower back now LOL emoticon I just get nervous that ill hurt myself but PT is saying the squats are fine for me with the ball.

I actually hiked Mt Holyoke in Mass shortly before my surgery! It took 3hrs to get to the top....and of course I used the pavement trail up for safety but either way it was a beautiful day with a beautiful view and an AMAZING work out!! emoticon I was sore for like a week after but it was sooooo worth it.....I had to get it out of my system before I was "out of order" after my surgery!! emoticon emoticon

Welcome to the team!

Hiking is a great way to get in the activity that will help with your goals, I agree with Grandmalil about the tracking, it really helps keep the check on the intake, which, when trying to lose weight is really the key.

Do what you can with your back issues, did you have PT after your surgery? If so, did they give you some exercises you could do yourself? I think strengthening your back would probably help with your issues, but you don't want to harm it in any way either.

Tell us about your hiking too! We love a good trail tale!

awww thankyou so much for your warm and caring welcome!! So happy to hear you had such a fun time hiking! That sounds like a trip I need to go on emoticon Nerve pain is soooooooo fustrating I used to try very hard to remind myself it could be worse....even with some limitations with activities at least Its not as bad as it could be!
Ive had alot success with my surgery though...im very please to say that the tooth ache feel that I once had in my butt and down my right leg is GONE! emoticon I do how ever still have a pinch in my butt that my strengthening exercises bring on...but Im told thats normal and should go away......

So now its just my bad back that will be a bit of a hurdle in my life....Im hoping to keep the nerve pain away as well..because it can come back because of doing the wrong things....

Anyways Thankyou again grandma emoticon It really is good to hear someone else enjoying life with similar issues! I Wish you the best with your goals! It sounds like your a strong determined woman! emoticon

Welcome to the Spark Community. I was recently diagnosed with "significant arthritis" in my neck, which is causing a pinched nerve. It limits some of what I can do. I find that hiking is my favorite activity. I just got back from vacation in Niagara Falls with my daughter and two grandsons, and I think they were pretty surprised that Grandma did so well with all the walking. We even did a little hiking in the gorge area on the New York side. Would have loved to do more, but even with 4 full days, we barely had any time. Did have a great campground on the Canadian side and the kids had a ball there.
I know it is tough not being able to do many of the strength training things because of pain, but keep with your aerobic exercise, and check out some of the exercises for folks with limited mobility that are on this site. Tracking the food has been big for me. I was 13 pounds down (need to take off a couple that somehow crept back on during vacation), and for some reason, when I am putting things down on the tracker, it makes me more motivated to stay within calories. I also set 10,000 steps as my goal each day, and since that is also on the Activity Tracker, there are some days where I am not at 10,000 and I will march around the house during TV to get there. Although no one is checking up on me, I feel the urge to meet the goals that I set for myself.
Good luck with your recovery.
Grandma

I recently had back surgery and quit smoking about 5months ago. It was a 12week recovery for my back and Im currently still doing some PT to help strengthen my core abit.....

I used to be 260lbs but lost 110lbs 5years ago and kept it off till the quitting of cigs and the back surgery happend.....now Im finding it difficult without much support to get on track... I do get sore cuz of my back and I do have to be careful with certain activities.....

I love hiking and walking outside t..and enjoy going to new places....
Id love to make a few friends and find the support I need with these new circumstances Im in..with people who GET IT and want what I want out of this.....
