Hi Mary and welcome! I'm in southern New Mexico so although the mountains may get that much (we hope so anyway as our state is very dehydrated LOL) we don't get that much in the lower levels. I am between mountains and high desert areas, so I can usually find places to hike one way or another. Sounds so beautiul with all that snow.

Welcome Mary, it's snowing here in Reno, Nevada too, but not quite that high, probably in the mountains. But the roads are closed, so we'll be staying put for now!

That week long hiking trip with your daughter sounds so great! I am being attracted more and more to the idea of backpacking, although I haven't done it yet. This time of here in southern New Mexico the weather has been so good for the day hikes, with temps in the 60's. I'm loving it. I wish you could back over this way sometime and I could introduce you to some of my mountain fixes.

emoticon to the team from Orange County, California! I know what you mean about getting your 'mountain fix' because I suffer from the same thing if I don't get out - around where I live, there are plenty of little 'hills' but I enjoy hiking them, esp where there are trails that are a little less trampled. I used to love backpacking but haven't gone for 6-7 yrs - still have all the eqpt and will most likely get out there for more of that at some point, in spite of advancing 'old age' and all that!

Happy trails!

Thanks for the welcome, Lindakay228! I have hiked once in the Gila, and absolutely love southern New Mexico! Well, truth to tell, I love the whole state. You are very lucky! And I've only been to the Continental Divide once -- in Wyoming, near Yellowstone.

Where I live is very flat, so to get to any real mountains I need to drive several (like 4) hours. That means I have to make do with little nature trails around my house unless I go on a big trip. Once a year, my daughter and I do a week-long hiking trip in one of the national parks so I can get my mountain fix!

Hi and welcome to the team! Glad you've joined us here. I've never done backpacking but have done lots of hiking and it is my stress reliever and my therapy. I live in southern New Mexico where I have lots of hiking trails around me. I live about 10 minutes from the Gila National forest, and have a lot of mountain trails to hike north, west, and east of me, when weather is fairly good. To my south is a lot of high desert areas not far away that are usually good in the winter because they dont get much snow and it's gone quickly. I feel really lucky to have so much opportunity. I've heard of some beautiful areas on the east coast, and have been reading about hikers on the Appalachian Trail a lot lately and would love to hike sections of it backpacking, although I don't really think I want to do the whole through hike at one time. In my area the Continental Divide trails runs close by and I've hiked different pieces as day hikes. It runs from Mexico to Canada and parts of it are literally 15 minutes or a little more from my house. A guided backpack trip sounds like a great reward for yourself!

Hi hikers,

Although I live in the northeast US now, I'm from the west coast originally, and grew up doing lots of hiking and backpacking. One of my big rewards down the road will be to treat myself to a guided backpack trip. Now that is very motivating!

There are nature preserves and trails near my home, and I'm hoping this group will inspire me to get out there and hike in them more regularly than I usually do. My last good hike was a yoga/hiking retreat over a long weekend in early October, in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts. I felt great for days afterwards, and the experience reminded me how important hiking has always been to me.

I'm glad to be joining your team! emoticon
