Hi Cindy!
They've recently moved the picture of the Piasa Bird to another location across the bluffs. It's still along the "Great River Road" - just in another location.
They also have a fantastic bike trail along the river bluffs - too long for me to bike, but to walk it is amazing.

Pere Marquette may be the campgrounds you're referring to on the bluffs. Especially fantastic in the morning.
If you ever plan a trip up here, I'd be happy to hike with you! :)

Greetings from Southern California and welcome to the team! Thanks for all the ideas - sounds like I'd really like it there! We have 'millions' of hikes around here, too, and I'm fortunate to be able to choose between beach hikes, foothill hikes, mountain hikes, desert hikes and many other types, just within a fairly short drive from my home. But DH and I also love to travel so it's good to know there are so many great places to hike in your area, too - we'll have to plan a trip there one of these days before too long!

Wow, your post brings back a lot of memories. As a child I lived in Godfrey, Illinois when my father was in the service. I remember a large campground somewhere in the area where we would camp and there was a trail leading to the edge of a bluff overlooking the river. There were also a lot of fossils in the area. So many good memories of that area and it was certainly beautiful. I also remember the Piasa Bird pictograph along the road. I always thought it was so amazing.

Thanks for bringing back all those wonderful memories. I'm going to have to plan a trip back up that way sometime.

So thankful to have found this team! The Mississippi river lends to some fantastic (and occasionally taxing) hiking trails! We have woods, bluffs, plains, caves, and man made hiking trails through the area.

My name is Brittany, I live across the river from St. Louis, MO
(literally I can walk to the edge of the river from where I live)
I'm 24 years old and I love the outdoors. While the cities here are kind of rundown, the surrounding natural areas are really beautiful if you know where to look.

My favorite is hiking up the bluffs overlooking the conjunction of the Missouri and Illinois rivers! We also have some beautiful caves (Meramec) to explore and just some pretty wooded areas. If you ever get a chance to travel out this way, I recommend it! Stop in at Grafton, IL for a challenging trail - be sure to wear weather ready boots, Midwest weather is absolutely unpredictable and the bluffs can garner a challenge after the rain...

Bring a camera too - the scenery is breathtaking!
