Ah yes. I read her trail journal (my husband is an avid white blaze reader). She almost missed her mark by 1 day. Luckily the ranger looked the other way :) Crazy mileage - 40+ miles a day!

I have read many- the most recent was by Jennifer Pharr Davis-Becoming Odyssa- about her first thru hike. Jennifer is an ultra hiker- she trail ran the AT south this past sumeer in 46 days, 11 hours and 20 minutes- with her husband running the support team. She has also written a book about that adventure.
Becoming Odyssa was a very good book-more then just talk about the trail but about the emotions it takes to do it. I think you would like it.

Yes, I've read a few. My favorite by far is Bryson. A close second is AWOL. I've also watched Southbounders a zillion times. :)

For our short weekend and day trips we will be finishing up NH this year. Once we're completely done the NE we plan to start on the 4000 footers in NH. Have a few done already.

SWEETPICKLES6, all were NOBO-she was "hiking home"- we live in New Hampshire. You are going to love your time out there. Have you read any of the many books written by thru hikers?

Thanks all for the encouragement!

@HOLISTIC5 - Wow 3 times! Were they all the same direction (NOBO/SOBO)? I would love to be able to quit my job and thru-hike with my husband just once!

@FOX_CHRIS - Franconia Ridge was such a great walk. Lafayette was our first 4000 ft mountain :-) And I can't wait to Springer. We will be staying at the Inn as well.

I would LOVE to be able to section hike the AT. My daughter has completed it 3 times- My hubby and I drove places along the way-esp up north ( we live in New Hampshire) to meet her and her fellow hikers. She made some wonderful life long friends.

Hope you have a great time - two weeks on the AT sounds amazing. I used to live in NH and did parts of the AT there (but not backpacking). Also have been to Springer Mtn (stayed at the Hike Inn - great place!) at the GA end.

Hi all! I'm new from MA. I love backpacking and it's a great way to stay fit. So far I've completed 600 of 2100 miles on the Appalachian Trail (in their entirety: MA, CT, PA, MD, WV and large chunks of VT, NH, ME, NY, NJ and just started VA). Are there any other AT enthusiasts? My husband and I are hoping to fly to GA this fall to hike NOBO for two weeks. It's going to be tough!
