Thank you both for the help. I started going every weekend. We started at 3.5 miles and are working our way up. We're at 7 miles last weekend. That one was a slight challenge toward the end but we nailed it. It felt good, too. Adding the back pack and gradually load it is a great tip. I didn't think of that. As far as where, we live in the middle of the Jersey Pine Barrens so we're going to do the Batona Trail. I've done parts of it before as one of my favorite camp sites is along it but never attempted the whole thing.

Awesome! With a little planning you will have a great time!! Where are you planning to hike?

Regular hiking and figuring out what you may need gear wise are important. I began 7 months ago (very out of shape) by going on a 30 minute hike once a week, gradually that increased to an average of 2 hours each week and occasionally getting out during the week. I've also added a pack (stated that in December) weighing around 20 lbs at present and working towards 40. Your stamina and endurance increase greatly with consistency! I'm now trying to get out about 3 times a week anywhere from 30 minute jaunts to 3 hour treks - as time and weather allow.

There are some knowledgeable people about, making this a great forum if you have other specific questions!

Welcome and best of luck preparing for your trip -- sounds like an awesome adventure!

One of the best ways to prepare is obviously to start regularly training by doing hikes and starting to build up your distant. As you get stronger you can start adding a backpack with light weight to your hikes to get comfortable with that, building up to longer hikes and a pack with the same weight you'll have on your trip.
