Wow, that sounds like it's quite the challenge to learn Danish! Do you have an opportunity to be in touch with native speakers? That might help a lot

Re/ Danish....
I just read something that said that most languages have 5 vowel sounds. English has 10 vowel sounds. Danish has 20 and some say up to 30 vowel sounds. And the foreign listener cannot hear the difference ! Many times in Danish, the consonants are silent or softened, so that doesn't help matters.

Also, they seem to leave out words or at least parts of words when speaking rapidly, per my experience with some of the clips on the internet. I guess all colloquial speech does that to some degree. In one blog I read the writer said that in her studies she found that 2 years of study did not help her understand common Danish conversation. I have found a few things on youtube where I can hear common speech patterns, pitch changes, and pronunciation for Danish.

I can imagine that the pronunciation is hard! It's wise to stick to learning one language at a time!

Well, positivity can't hurt anything. Thanks for the welcome!

Danish is fun. The pronunciation is the tricky part. I would probably like Dutch too which also looks very interesting, but having started with Danish I will stick with that. One foreign language for me is enough !

I can hear you in that need to be positive and calm. I hope that maybe being part of this team can help a bit with that.

My name is Sue (Susan) and I am 69 years young. I have 3 adult children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grand-children. I live in a rural area in northern Illinois, right on the Mississippi River.
Right now, my main focus is to help my husband through a very serious health problem. I did have some personal goals but right now all I can do is take care of the basics and him. It seems there is something new to deal with each day. However.....there is a great need to be positive, remain hopeful, and stay calm (biggest challenge for me, actually).
I did look up Mark Verhees and am able have get a translation of the page of his website, but not much else. He also has a Facebook page and some of that can be translated by the Facebook.. Seeing the Dutch is very interesting to me. I can't even guess at the meaning of the words!

I am trying to stay healthy myself by taking care of my basic needs. In my quiet time I am trying to learn Danish because I hope to make a trip to Copenhagen! Still holding on to that dream even in spite of all that is going on.

I'm glad you're here Nancy! Great plans. Cutting out sugar helps so much to beat cravings, is my experience.

I'm Nancy - 57 years old, living in New Hampshire with DH, DD, 2 dogs, 7 cats, 1 guinea pig and one very large goldfish. My two sons are moved out and getting married, one at the end of this month, the other next May. My goals are: to replace bad habits with good ones, to improve my health, increase my flexibility, balance, and strength and hopefully lose weight in the process. Breaking my addiction to junk sugar and making exercise a daily routine are what I plan to focus on first.
