I enjoy spending time with the residents in a nursing home nearby. When I retired, I took a part time position as an activity assistant. I have since dropped sown to just visiting. I especailly like the memory care unit.

I am a BSW with an MA in Gerontology. I am a hospice social worker, which in my area is not an inpatient in a hospice facility. Half of my patients are in nursing homes or assisted living centers, and the others are in their own homes.

I know that God will not give me anything that I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much. - Mother Teresa

Hi everyone! I've been on SparkPeople just over two weeks now but I'm still trying to figure it all out. I'm currently a social work instructor with an online graduate program where I teach in both a master's and a doctoral program. I am also in the process of beginning a grief counseling practice. I've been in the field for a long, long time so I've done pretty much all of it. Yeah, that's one of the things I love most about social work is how many hats we can wear and still be in social work. I'm glad I found this team!

That's what is so great about social work. There are so many areas we can make a difference. Loved reading about all the diversity here. You all give your best to make others lives better. Take a little of that energy and direct it toward yourself. emoticon

Hi all. I am a medical, clinical social worker (MSW, LICSW, GMHP, CDMHP). Currently I work for the veteran's medical center on a home based primary care team. I go into the patient homes to work with them and their families. I do a lot of counseling for PTSD and caregiver strain.

I worked closely with DJFS when I worked as Head Start family advocate. I sure can understand that feeling of not going to make it another day but the rewards are great & of course I am not talking about money.

Hi all, I am not actually a social worker, but I do work in the Human Services field. I am a receptionist and project manager at a Christian Counseling office in Tennessee, and I plan to start my graduate program in Mental Health Counseling this fall. I hope to work primarily with children and teens.

Hey all. I work for Children's Services in Michigan doing investigations. High stress, high variability and lots of hours. There are parts of it I love and parts that I feel I can't do for another day. I'm about to hit my first year there and am not sure how I made it this long, lol.

Hello all! I work at the local county mental health center. I run PHP groups and other groups mostly anger management and grief. My job is a challenge but it is never dull. It reminds me that I need to take care of myself and that I have recently put myself on the back burner. I am glad to have found this group.

I just joined the team. You are all such an inspiration for what I hope to accomplish in the Social Work field. I just graduated in December with my Bachelors. I did a year of unpaid internship at my local DFCS agency, which I absolutely loved. Right now however I am staying home with my 2nd son who was born in March. My husband and I both feel it is in our families best interest to have me home with him until he is one, so I will not be actively looking for a job until August 2017 which seems forever away but I am confident it will all work out. I hope to also go back for my Masters program soon.

HEY!
I am an MSW social worker. I am an investigator with the state through the office of child safety. I am hoping to gain my license soon. I deal with the severe abuse cases which can be stressful which often leaves me spent by the end of the day. I have to lose this weight for myself, health and my children.

I am an MSW working towards my LCSW by the end of the year. I currently work with Adolescent females with co-occurring disorders in residential and group home settings. I deal mostly with alcohol, cannabis and opiate abuse as well as bipolar II, ADHD, ODD, Mood Disorders and Conduct Disorder. Most of my clients are mandated to treatment by the courts and are resistant to treatment. They stay at the facility anywhere from 60-180 days and in some cases longer. We use the 7 Challenges and DBT at our facility. I love working with the girls and spend a lot of my energy helping them to make healthier life choices...why is it so hard for me to do that for myself? I need to lose this weight and start to feel better...

Hi.. I am an RSW with my masters and bachelors in social work. I am a transplant social worker; my population is mainly lung transplant patients although I occasionally cover for the social workers dealing with the other organ groups as well. I work mostly with pre transplant out patients doing psycho social assessment but also do discharge planning with my in patients when needed. I help patients put plans and social supports together when necessary; to help them get through the transplant process successfully. Overall, it's a busy, intense job and I follow my patients from beginning to end. I come home exhausted but love my job and find that working out at the end of a work day helps me to cope with and reduces my stress level.

Good luck to all of you on your weight loss journey.

Hello Social Workers,

I have an MSW from the University of Houston and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Texas. Currently, I am working as a therapist at a residential program for adolescents in Samoa which is in the South Pacific. I have done all sorts of social work in the past 19 years from commmunity clinics to hospitals to hospice to wilderness therapy. I love the flexibility that a social work degree gives me.

Hello everyone! My name is Jessica, and I work in the realm of hospice and palliative care. I am a Licensed Social Worker in the state of Pennsylvania, and proud to have a MSW and BSW. I looooooooooooooove what I do, although the high caseloads (we are short-staffed, so they have me seeing about 75-80 patients per month!) and the extensive documentation can sometimes create frustrating roadblocks to giving all of my patients the extensive level of care and attention they deserve. I am also a single parent of a fantastic little boy who is in kindergarten. I lost all of my baby weight after I had my son, but when I quit smoking (2.5 yrs ago) while employed full time and working on the BSW and then the MSW, I made poor eating choices and exercised rarely. So, even though I achieved many important goals as a single parent, non-smoker, and with my career, here I am 75 pounds later wondering how I let myself get this out of control!!!
At the end of the day, I often feel so worn out from attending to the needs of others that I forget all about the importance of making self-care a priority. So here I am, biting the bullet, and persevering to meet another goal of mine - to be a healthy, active, and attractive woman who enjoys such a balance between family, work, and health, that I am able to fulfill the responsibilities of all my roles beyong my wildest expectations!

Hey everyone,

I am a MSW currently working at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center doing IOP/PHP groups and individuals with adults. I LOVE what I do! I have also worked as a doula, in medical wraparound, adoption, placement, and as a TSS with children on the autism spectrum. I'm working on becoming an LSW and eventually an LCSW.

I would not trade what I do for anything. It fulfills me everyday! emoticon

I am a LBSW and I graduated in 2006 and started out working as a the Social Service Director at a Skilled Nursing Facility and then after working there for two years worked as a hospital discharge planner for a year 1/2. I am currently back in the role as a Social Worker in the nursing home and love it.....I started out here and think that working with the elderly and mentally ill clients is really rewarding. I am so excited to connect with other social workers and hope that everyone stays blessed.

Hello,
I am a late bloomer to the college scene. It took me 11 years to complete my pre-reqs at a community college while raising 2 children. My husband of 34 yrs encouraged me to complete my degree and to quit work and go full time to WSU, Detroit, MI. I walked the stage for my BSW diploma at the age of 53 like I had won the lottery. My family was proud and I felt great to have accomplished one of my dreams. I am now a supervisor/case manager, working with birth parents that have their children in foster care and want to be reunified with them. It's very rewarding and challenging at the same time. I just signed up with Spark People and find it very easy to work with. emoticon

I am a Bachelor level Social Worker. I started out as a Medical Social Worker in a small hospital in 1992. I have been working with children and adults for the past 5 years. I have been teaching children groups in an outpatient mental health treatment center. I work with people who have ADHD,ADD, Bipolar, Scheiphrenia, PTSD and others. I also have been doing Psychosocial rehabilitation for children and adults. I just got laid off a two months ago but I am back in school going for my Masters then my PHD in psychology. I went back to school because there is a real need for psychologists in our area. The one that travels to our area is not very good. He and I have butted heads a lot because of some of the ways he presents himself as a know it all making people feel like idiots especially women. I think our area deserves better. I joined this group because I have 170lbs to lose and if I don't get serious then I may not be around for my 12 grandchildren due to medical conditions. emoticon

Hey everyone.

Today is my one year anniversary of working my very first social work job. I am a social worker/discharge planner/everything else at an awesome rehab facility. I also have a population of long term care residents.

I am just going to have to get used to being perpetually behind, though my orderly side has a hard time with that.

Thinking of getting my master's in gerontology, rather than social work.

Nice to see other social workers out there!

Until I moved here in February 2009, I was an investigator of child abuse/neglect in South Carolina. Now a full-time stay-at-home-wife and empty-nester. Can't wait to get back into the workforce again! Staying at home is not for me!

Hello, I work in the non for profit, human services field. I have been in the field for over 18 years, working with the developmentally challenged. Currently I work with elder mentally retarded adults in a day habilitation program, providing support and ensuring the appropriate services are provided at the day program and the home environment. I love what I do, however as of Monday I will begin studying for my LMSW and then who knows where life will lead me, any tips on the study process would be great, I hate studying, lol. Have a great day!

Just joined your team. I am from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada...well actually I live in a small town north of Saskatoon (Warman), but I work in Saskatoon. I have been working in the Social Work field for about 17 years. I started as a counsellor in a Sexual Assault Centre in North Battleford (father north), moved to Mental Health there(which is connected to our Health Regions here) for a time. I eventually got a job in Saskatoon with the Health Region (Mental Health and Addiction Services) working as a Case Manager with youth with co-occurring mental health and addiction problems. Now I work in the same place, but provide what we have coined Forensic Substance Management Services with Young Offenders (a fancy way of saying addiction work with youth involved in criminal behavior).

I am hoping to start my MSW in 2010, but can't see myself changing jobs once I get my MSW...except taking my supervisors job when he retires maybe.

Hope I haven't rambled on too much.

today i passed my licensure exam and am now a LCSW! that felt good to type! however, the 5 pounds i lost over 6 weeks is probably all back on-i have been eating horribly for the past several weeks. march 1st i begin again and thought being on a social worker sp team would be fun! i was on a team that was working towards a goal of 10 pounds lost by v-day. it really did help me stay motivated. i went downhill when i stopped posting my calories and checking in with my group.

I am the treatment director at a therapeutic foster care agency. i also do part-time work with hospice-on-call-mostly weekends. looking forward to this journey! emoticon

Hi, I am Jenny and I am an MSW. I have been married 13 years and am the mother of 3 beautiful, ornery, sweet, rotten children. Michael is 12, Carlie is 7, and Corinne is 2. Yes, I was on the five year plan. I guess God had a plan for me. I can tell you that I watch the porch for that stork now LOL. I am currently working as the Director of Social Services/Disaster Coordinator at a small rural hospital. I love the people, hours, and not having to drive the countryside... not to mention I like the job. I started working as a BSW about 10 years ago, and went back in 2004 and graduated with a MSW in 2005. I have worked for hospice and LOVE IT, that is where my heart really is, and I have also worked in child welfare. Loved that too just didn't pay me enough to pay my bills. I would like to be supervised and have contacted someone I know but just have not taken the plunge. The whole cost of it is a deterrent for sure. I have spoke to my employer and they have said they would pay it, but that was before financial trouble in medical care. Anyhow, I am glad to have found you guys, and hope to give and get lots of good support!!

Hi all! I am an LMSW working in Arizona. I work in a call center and get calls from all area emergency rooms in search for psychiatric beds for patients throughout Arizona. I LOVE my job, especially NOT having to interact face to face with the patients.
I received my MSW at the University of Texas, Arlington. Perhaps Melknee did too? I did my internship with child protective services in Hurst, Texas.
And I see EDLMSW works in a hospital emergency room. I really like the hospital environment. However, Ed, I see you have a passion for geriatrics which is definitely where it's at. Geriatric care is growing in leaps and bounds.
And Donegal in Ireland, the only feedback I can offer you is that we had a social worker from the South American Country of Columbia working with us here in Arizona. She needed a special work visa and at one point had difficulty with her document renewal. She is still working here, but I am not sure what it took for her to stay in America.
Have a great weekend everyone!

HI, I'm a BSW who has done mental health case management and also ran and ICF/MR group home. I'm currently employed as a clinical reviewer for PASRR - which is pre-admission screening and resident review for nursing homes. We do assessments to ensure that individuals with mental illness/developmental delay/or intellectual disability are appropriately placed in nursing facilities and that they receive the services they need.

Hi all! I am a LMSW who works for Texas Child Protective Services. I have been with the agency for 5 years and am currently an investigations supervisor. I have finished my supervision hours and am planning to take my LCSW this spring. I love working for the state for the most part but would like to eventually be able to be a stay at home mom who works on the side. While at home, I would like to work in a group setting with kids who have parents or siblings with disabilities. I am also looking into doing the clinical supervision.

Hi..relatively new to Sparkpeople and new to this group. I am a LMSW living in South Carolina. I currently have two jobs. I currently work night shift(4 years) in the emergency department at one of the local hospitals. In addition, I contract with the state and serve as a case manager for the elderly in need of in home services. My passion is definitely in geriatrics but Medical social work in the emergency department pays the bills. :-) I also supervise graduate students who are currently pursuing a MSW.

Hi, everyone! I'm new to the team as of today, so I thought I'd say hello. I'm a P-LCSW in North Carolina (I got my MSW in May of '08, and I'll be fully licensed by July of '10).

I work for an agency that specializes in providing trauma-focused therapy to children who've been abused, maltreated, or otherwise traumatized. My specific role involves working closely with the local police to make sure children who've witnessed violence have access to mental health assessment and treatment. The best thing about my job is that my colleagues are SUPER supportive.

Anyway, I'm happy to be here and can see using this forum to vent after a particularly hard day. Last week, I had an especially difficult session. I was pleased to realize that my first thought was not, "I need to eat something!" (A couple weeks ago, that would have been my immediate reaction.) emoticon

"Be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees or the stars; you have a right to be here.... In the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul."
