What you could do is add more veggies to meals you already make.

Also if you teach your kids why its sooo important to eat healthy then they just might be more willing to try new foods out.

Thanks. I'll look those up.

I'm trying to think of a menu for my family, moving towards a whole food menu. I'm going to sit with my husband this afternoon and brain storm. With 5 children, it's hard to find things everybody will like. My 2 skinny kids will eat anything I make. My 2 overweight kids are super picky. My little guy is in between. My husband will eat anything I give him. He's a treasure!

Love,

Helen

I made the traditional foods for my family and in-laws...but I was able to eat the cooked carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and corn. I made my mashed potatoes with some blended tofu/ butter flakes/ and nutritional yeast. I liked it. I made Dr. Furhman's raw pumpkin pie for myself. It was OK. I also made a 3 layer thing made out of cashews in the food processor... cashew cream, etc... I couldn't stand it... My husband likes it and is eating it instead of 1 meal a day to get rid of it for me.... I made the turkey and bought the pies for the family.

What did you make?

Love

Hi there! I'm looking for a new "home" group on spark and I joined a bunch these last 2 weeks to try to find one I can fit myself into. I stumbled across your group and thought you seemed so nice and you log on frequently, so I thought I'd say "hello" and make some new friends. I've been on spark for many years. The group I was with dwindled down to 2 of us and then I joined one of her other groups so we could still be together but then she wouldn't have to post in as many groups. It was one of the Biggest Loser groups on Spark. I've been with them for about a year, but wanted to be in a less goal-driven group, so here I am for a visit, if you don't mind!

I have 5 kids, ages 5-17 and I'm 48. I homeschool them. I've been struggling with my weight for 11 years. It took me 6 years to lose the weight after baby #4, and now it has been 5 years after baby #5. I've become a nutritarian in the last 3-4 months, so I'm learning how to cook that way. Some of my family is joining me in that way of eating, some are not. :)

We had a quiet Thanksgiving with just my husband's parents over. Last week I flew to WI (I live in NJ) for my Dad's open heart surgery. I could only stay for 3 days and then flew back. His surgery didn't go well. He had a lot of complications, including internal bleeding and a stroke.... Dad's a retired Pastor and Mom's a retired nurse. She continues to visit him every day and we keep in touch over the phone.

So, that's what's going on in my life! Thanks for letting me jump in and join your conversation.

Love,

Helen

just discovered this team!

1. What name would you like to be called on SP? susan

2. What brings you to SP? i joined in SP in 2006, but really didn't do anything with it until 2012, when a friend and colleague the same age as i am had lost about 60 lbs with spark by her 60th birthday, and i instead had been struggling to get rid of the last what i thought were 15 lbs, but continued losing to 20 lbs down, back to the weight from my 20s. i've maintained for 2 plus years, with one blip upwards last winter. i am now trying to (re)learn how to maintain without the yoyo effect.

3. What are your expectations from the team? sharing the journey with like-minded individuals, finding and providing inspiration

4. Married, single, widowed, in a relationship? married over 40 years

5. Do you have children, or grandchildren? three grown children, one grandchild, scattered around the country - new york, san diego/san franciso, and seattle

6. Where do you live? winthrop WA spring and fall, sweden summer, molokai winter

And, anything else you would like to share about yourself:) we have been on a plant-based journey for 6 years, with fish a couple of times a week. mainly following fuhrman. my dad just celebrated his 99th birthday, DH's dad lived to almost 99 - and i intend for us to live that long as healthfully as possible. i work as a translator from swedish to english (DH is a retired MD who now works for me), and we continue to work wherever we are. my clients are in sweden, so i work nights, sleeping on either end, then most of the time we can be active during the day - with our border collie as inspiration to get out frequently.

My husband and I moved from Southern California to Illinois 3 and 1/2 years ago to go through my parents' house. We love it here. Most people can't understand how we can be so happy here, but it is quiet, unhurried, people are polite, the season's are gorgeous and - well you get the idea.

Six years ago my mother died in an unnecessary hospital procedure (colonoscopy when she was already so ill but getting better). I dissolved into an emotional wreck. It's taken a long time to pull myself back to even wanting to be healthy. Fortunately, through the McDougall team here on Spark People (and drmcdougall.com/forums ), I found my way to the healthiest way of eating ever! I've lost 100 pounds in one year and I am finally losing the last 20 pounds to get to my optimum weight.

I look forward to getting to know all of you.

2. What brings you to SP? I have been here 6 years, health is number one objective. Weight loss would be nice.

3. What are your expectations from the team? ...to get ideas for quick and easy ways to eat mostly plants.

4. Married, single, widowed, in a relationship? Married for 22 years

5. Do you have children, or grandchildren? No children or grandchildren

6. Where do you live? Central Texas - Austin area

I have two beautiful cats. Dealing with multiple health challenges has me up and down on eating right and exercising. I am getting better. I do my best to maintain regular exercise and to eat healthy. ... I love sweets, however, my downfall. Dh also has a sweet tooth, so brings home sweets all the time! He is definitely a meat and potatoes guy, but does not complain when I make quinoa or other concoctions, all plant based. emoticon

Kinda makes you think you are on the right track with fruits and veggies being the center of our plates. It's great to have you on board. Also thank you for sharing those photos on garden veggies and fruits.

Thanks for letting me know about this team. I don't have a lot of time to stay active on the computer because I keep trying to be active outside in my other life. But everything you told me about the team seems to really fit me right now.

Please tell us a little about yourself so we can get to know you, and you,us.Please copy and paste the questions below, then post your own answers next to each one.

1. What name would you like to be called on SP?
Bravelute, or Sue

2. What brings you to SP? Originally in 2008 to lose a lot of weight after lots of chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries, sitting in the recliner, and steroids to help me deal with that put the weight back up there and my general health was a mess. But then the cancer came back in the fall with more surgery and chemo that lasted until November, 2011.

I finally figured out how to access my account again in 2012, to start doing what I could for my health. Back then I wanted to lose weight and improve nutrition, and learn what I could to prevent a 3rd diagnosis. I'm still doing that, but my general health is VERY GOOD, and I just had a bunch of x-rays and cat scans and pretty much know my core is cancer free.

3. What are your expectations from the team? This is a hard question. I love to share if I think I might be able to help, & I like to know where my information is coming from, & I try to do the same back when I share information. So, I might say something like, "In my experience . . ." or "In my opinion"

or "According to Dr. Fuhrman in Eat for Health on Kindle p. _______" OR I'll share a link to the information I'm talking about so you can decide if it's worth paying attention to or a bunch of whooie.

4. Married, single, widowed, in a relationship? Single, in a relationship

5. Do you have children, or grandchildren? No.

6. Where do you live? Central Florida, Plant Zone 9

And, anything else you would like to share about yourself:)

I try to follow Dr. Fuhrman and stay current with what he says based on his current research. So I started with Eat to Live.

I have learned about anti-angiogenic foods that help our bodies keep angiogenesis in balance and have started a team to make that information available.

So when I plan my "nutritarian" menus, I make choices from the anti-angiogenic foodlist first, then add in other foods. Fruits and vegetables now are the meal focus. (that was difficult switching from meat being the focus). I will have vegan days. I will have days with a small amount of meat (grass fed beef, free range poultry, cold water fish) added to a stir fry or salad. I will have days when I eat a small serving of meat with a mess of veggies dwarfing it.

Fruit usually figures in to my desserts and snacks to keep me away from those things which shall remain nameless, but are binge triggers, all the same.

In my opinion, the TV remote is the most valuable invention of the century. Why you ask? Well, you can turn it on and off from anywhere in the house. But the best is when you hear the familiar sound or notice the lead in to what will surely be a visual of a trigger food, you can flick back to a different favorite channel. I Think they pay the computer to track all that. So if they know enough of us are leaving them on a certain commercial, maybe they'll wonder why, and fix it!! Nice dream, anyway!!

Interests? I love to garden and have 6- 4 X 4 raised beds. In my fall garden, I'm growing my greens, herbs, and sugar snap peas according to the square foot method. I'm able to have a salad a day for 2 from that. I do grow lots of other things in my spring garden. I'm not very successful keeping anything going in the summer here, except sprouts.

Besides the gardening and cooking, I do watercolor painting, marquetry, multimedia with joint compound, crochet, quilting, and use paper crafts and stamping as tools as needed. I also play the harp and am the 3rd member of a 4 member hand-bell team.

I am retired. I don't know how I EVER found time to teach and manage the house for 42 years. Because I don't ever seem to have a spare minute now.

1. What name would you like to be called on SP? My real name is Brenda, but if you called me Saphrael, I wouldn't be offended.

2. What brings you to SP? I joined Sparkpeople in 2011. I took advantage of a health coach through work, where we had weekly phone calls to help me set goals and discuss progress. He suggested Sparkpeople and a few other sites, though I can't recall now which ones. The Spark community has been a great motivator to get me healthy.

3. What are your expectations from the team?
Over the past year or so, I've been making great strides to clean up my diet. I eliminated added sugar this summer, natural and fake. I bought some Stevia this past month to try it out, but found I didn't need the extra sweetness. And I'm continually striving to cut out the processed foods. This is somewhat difficult because I prepare meals for my husband too (at least dinner) and he's a firm believer in the frozen simplicity of pre-packaged foods. I am quite sure he'd be on board with freshly prepared food, but I struggle to find time to make good tasting food. So, I hope to learn about different recipes, time saving tips, and new techniques in preparing wholesome food.

4. Married, single, widowed, in a relationship? Per the above, I am most definitely married. We'll be celebrating our 21st anniversary in April.

5. Do you have children, or grandchildren? I have three grown daughters, ages 21, 20, 20. The 20s are twins. My eldest is expecting a baby girl in January.

6. Where do you live? I live in Seattle, WA. But I was born and raised in Northern Michigan and spent quite a bit of time in Ann Arbor, MI before relocating to Seattle.

~Brenda
Seattle, WA

My choices reflect the life I want and deserve.
I honor my commitments.
I practice impeccable self care.
I am relentlessly positive with unyielding determination.
I seek and create joy in all situations.
