Watch Dr Fung. Choose to live and kick diabetes or choose to die.

https://youtu.be/FcLoaVNQ3rc

I was diagnosed with an a1c of 12.2. Like most of us my doctor recommended the same old crap and put me on metformin.

I choose to live. Using the combination of a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting my BGL was 110 this morning. No drugs. Diet and IF. I have lost 50 pounds so far.

Dr Fung is the foremost expert in this stuff. He makes it clear that we choose. We choose to do what is required to CURE THE DISEASE, or we choose to die. High insulin levels are as bad as high glucose.

Choose to live.

My kidney specialist prescribed Enalapril, a sister drug to Lisinopril, for me in the early days, when I was first diagnosed. It is supposed to relax the blood vessels so the kidneys don't have to deal with the high blood pressure so much... unfortunately, it actually gave me such a severe coughing problem that I ended up with a diaphragmatic hernia! These drugs often cause coughing issues but not usually that bad... the one medication that seemed to work the best for the high blood pressure/kidney connection, was Diovan, but my body won't tolerate the generic that came out recently, and my insurance won't pay for the brand name any more...

Every medication has side effects. All of them. Sometimes, a treatment can create additional problems that are worse than the original one!

I have a long list of things I can't take, because I have other medical conditions, and because I have horrid reactions to a whole lot of things... not fun.
So I did a LOT of research online, as well as taking free hospital sponsored classes... it's been worth it. I want to live, and I want to do it without dialysis for as long as I can!

I have kidney damage because I've been diabetic for over 20 years, and I can't take Excedrin because of my kidney disease. I only have 29% kidney function. Excedrin contains aspirin, which is a Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drug. The fact is, medical studies have shown that this classification of drugs actually DAMAGES your kidneys, so unless they are in good condition to start with, you can really create a bad situation, and your kidneys are involved somehow in the blood pressure issue too. The high blood pressure damages them as well, but its a vicious cycle because they are also involved in regulating the blood pressure. The more they get damaged, the higher the blood pressure gets, which causes more damage...
... I can't take Naproxin, or ibuprofen, either, they are also NSAIDs.

Aspirin is sometimes used as an inexpensive blood thinner. If the stroke is why you were taking it, your doctor may have felt it was worth it to prevent additional strokes from blood clots, but there are other blood thinners that are possibly safer for your kidneys in the long run. (I have to take one when I have surgery, to prevent excessive clotting, and they won't give me aspirin for that...usually it's a shot of Heparin for a few days.)

If it were me, I'd be asking my doctor some hard questions. Maybe there's something else he can give you that will take care of the headaches and be better for your blood pressure too. I hope so, because headaches are definitely not a good thing...
Good luck!
Kathy

NIGHTSTAR-71, whoever is prescribing your machine should do a check up on your machine and adjust pressure if needed. It kind of sounds like you might need a new mask as well.

I am planning on going up to the Adirondacks, maybe next fall.

Anyone ever heard of Lisinopril for diabetics as a heart/kidney protective measure? My insurance company had the pharmacist call to do my yearly med review and he was suggesting that and was going to send a letter to my doctor as well!

I do not understand why you cannot take Excedrin? I do have kidney problem, and it is pretty big problems, still I take Excedrin and in very big dose. When I got stroke I took up to 20 for day. Not I take 2 or 4 daily, every day. I take some other medicine for BP, but best it is Insulin I take. My blood is much better now, So, I do have good BP with medicine, still I need medicine to keep going.

I used to have migraines... yuck. they were because I had fallen YEARS before and was never checked for something called subluxation... my neck bones weren't in proper alignment. There are some exercises that helped, and now when I get headaches it's from high BP too. Still not fun. I can't take exedrin or aspirin, or anything like that because my kidneys are bad... I do keep an ice pack handy. I put that on my neck or my eyes with a towel between me and the ice, and lay down for a bit. AND I watch my salt intake. Too much table salt is very bad for kidneys and so is diabetes. It can be pretty scary stuff...

Hi I.M.MAGIC
I did see my eye doctor. She said probably it is because of my Bi Pop machine. The pressure is too high and it skip from under the mask. But it is not right. Now it is more then year passed. Discharge still come out. Sometimes more other time less. I just keep going.
What about headaches I do have them since my early life. Also it is High BP. Doctors actually cannot do anything about it. I take Excedrin It works so far.

Hi!
I have a question... have you seen an eye doctor? If there's discharge, you may have either a severe allergy or an infection, and as a diabetic not only do you have a compromised immune system, but your eyes are very vulnerable. That could explain the headaches too, who knows... it could also be from high blood pressure...
I was blind for six weeks because of these things so my eyes are weak now, but I am so grateful that I can SEE... PLEASE look into that as soon as you can!

Hi CATSNCOFFEENY7
I was diagnosed back in 2002 or 2001, do not remember now.
I was pretty OK, and I hoped I will lose weight, I can do it, and diabetes would go away. Now I do know, it is not possible with Metformin and SU. Now I take Insulin, and it is better.
I do have problems with eyes right now. It is some discharge from them. And it is severe swelling of leads.
I do have severe headache, so I cannot read. But now I do have very good library. It is mine. It is diabetes and other medical text books. I try to read them when I can.
I live in NYC. In Summer we go camping to Adirondack or Catskills. We know all public camps around NYC. In Winter we go to LIncoln Center, Metropolitan Opera, NY Phill, and Chamber Music. Also I love organ music.
This is my life now.
Thanks to respond.
Pretty good to know someone.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!

Hi NIGHTSTAR-71!

I have a friend who colors and I got some books to do, too. I can't color or do my needlework until I see my eye doctor in July. My glasses prescription has changed a lot and my close vision is bad.

Before I was diagnosed I remember sitting on the edge of the bed one night, dizzy and feeling horrible, and I thought to myself, "Something is wrong, really wrong and I don't know what." When I had the 12.2 I was insanely tired, even more exhausted then I get from the MS. The doctor diagnosed me with diabetes and I promptly burst into tears. Later that day I realized, "Hey, at least you know why you felt bad now."

That has got to be a blast seeing all that music!

JANICEONE1, I like to read before bed and right now I get large print so I can. It's so relaxing. I like to read a lot on Sundays, too.

Does you like coloring books?
I recently discovered them. I like needle work, but could not find the pathern. So, I started to look at coloring books.
Also I am interesting how 12,2 % looks like? I had 9.4% and I could not stand right. I could not rise my hand. 12,2% I cannot imaging.
Now I do have 5.9% still I am ill, cannot walk or stand.

Diet? Not for me.
I take 610 units of insulin daily. I eat at any time, day or night, when I need it. BTW, if diet worked and reduced high blood sugar numbers then why it is the same diet for those who has A1c=7.1% and for those who has A1c=12,4% Sound not logical.
Difference with insulin. If I do have 699mg/dl then I take one dose of insulin. When I do have less then that I take the dose of insulin I took when it was 699 and add more units to cover gap between normal level and real number. Simple.

Hi.
I live in NYC. we come to upstate in Summer. We like camping in Adirondack and Catskills.
I am diabetic type 2 was diagnosed in 2002. I did not live in America before that time. To have so high blood sugar it is so difficult for me to imaging. I had 9.4% and I could not rise my hands. I cannot brash my heir even now when sugar is 5.9%.
I take over 600 units of insulin daily dose. Looks like now I am in special stage of diabetes. Interesting even observe myself.
So, pat you cat for me.
I also have depression. I take 10mg Citalopram daily. To deal with this I like to coloring books. Very help to relax and start to belive in herself that we can create something beautiful.
I love music, and full season my man and I go to Lincoln Center, The Met and NY Phill. Also sometimes we go to church to listen to organ music. But it is complicated now. I am in wheelchair.
Hope to see you around and how do you going.
take care

Hello!

I have Type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed about three years ago with an A1c of 12.2. I am here on Spark to lose weight, control my diabetes better and improve my overall health. I am also dealing with multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia.

I live in a small town of about 1500 people in Upstate NY not far from what was part of the Erie Canal. Some of my town is a National Historic District with all kinds of fabulous old houses. I moved to New York State in 2010 and have grown to love it here. I'm so glad to be living in a small town again.

I have one cat, named Stonie, who is the light of my life. I've had him since he was a little kitten and now he is thirteen.. I named him Stone, for that George Jones song, "She's My Rock". I didn't call him Rock because I didn't want folks to ask, "Oh, did you name after Rock Hudson?"

I have a lot of interests including:

Cats, music, books, the Depression era, Irish things, spirituality, FLYlady, bargain shopping, antiques, country music, snail mail, planners and baking.
