You're welcome, JOURNEYBOUND,
For myself, I've been diabetic for such a long time that I've developed all the nastier complications from it. Even when you do everything you are supposed to, it can be tricky, LOL

My mother was a registered nurse, and she taught me that getting the right advice from proper resources makes a big difference, like having the right tool for a job. So I did go to a dietician, and she helped me set up an eating plan, which included things I liked and excluded some of my favorite foods!... Kind of like any other diet! LOL

While you wait for your first appointment, just try to lower the carbohydrate intake. Limit "white foods" like potatoes, rice, wheat products like bread and pasta. It's STILL a tough one for me. LOL
We're usually advised to get the majority of our calories from vegetables and a few fruits. Animal protein is helpful in the beginning, but not an excess of anything. A serving is about the size of your palm. You can usually have as much leafy green stuff as you want, (because of kidney problems I have to limit that too. emoticon )
but it's important to stick to vinaigrette type dressings as a healthier choice--and only use enough to lightly coat the greens, usually half of what it says on the lable. Whatever dressing you choose, though, no low fat dressings... I found out that there are some vitamins in veggies that require healthy fats in order to be absorbed.
It's a good thing, too, to make the changes a little at a time so your body doesn't object... but your nutrition specialist will help you with all of that too. I'm not a professional, I just know what I've been through. It has helped me be proactive in my own health issues. LOL
That's what I love about SparkPeople, I have learned SO much from the other folks who live with the same issues I deal with every day...
The more active you are in the discussions, the more you learn, and the more you can help others too~ Everyone has something to offer.

Do let us know how it goes with your doctor and the referral...
...and good luck!
Kathy emoticon emoticon

"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." thanks, Walter P. Chrysler. I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!
P.S. I looked up enthusiasm, and it says the root words mean God within... interesting...!

Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steady, like a heartbeat... and that works too! LOL

Hello I.M. Magic ~

Thank you for the welcome and the response! I do appreciate your suggestions. I have my calorie intake around 1200 per day.

I've been trying to eat way more vegetables and protein than I previously ate. I also am watching portion sizes and combinations of food to see how they affect my energy level and blood sugar levels,

I'm open to any and all suggestions and advice or lessons learned.

Thank you again.

Hi, JOURNEYBOUND,
First, welcome to the team.
Secondly, medical schools that train MDs are only required to give them 25 hours of training in nutrition. 25 hours out of about six YEARS. I'd want a second opinion, some one who specializes in that.

I would ask for a referral to a dietician or nutrition specialist. 500 calories a day might be alright for a day or two but will eventually put you in the hospital with metabolic disturbances... you're looking for a lifestyle change, not a crash diet.

Quick question:
Have you set up your nutrition tracker yet? You said you were using SparkPeople, I'd be interested in the parameters you programmed...
Kathy

I'm new to being type 2 diabetic. I just left my MD a little while ago. She has not discussed any particulars about how to change my eating etc so I have been reading on SparkPeople and the American Diabetes Association sites. She told me at my appointment...and I am still shocked....that I should be eating 5-6 times per day with 80 calories per time!! Huh?! That's less than 500 calories per day!! That isn't correct is it? I used to eat like that but ended up messing up my metabolism. Any help is appreciated....I know you're not MDs.....

You're welcome.
The nice thing about Sparkpeople, you can print out reports to take to your nutrition specialist, AND make menus ahead of time. And it makes a printable grocery list, too! emoticon

I took my laptop to my nutrition specialist's office once, and showed her some screen captures of my reports and menus, and she wanted to see more... she has actually referred some of her other patients to SparkPeople! LOL

I like the people on the site, all with similar goals, all with interesting stories and tips... it's literally been a lifesaver!

Glad you're here~
Kathy

If you start with the nutrition tracker here on SparkPeople, and just start with LOGGING WHAT YOU EAT, for some people that is such an eye opener... I know it was for me!
It helps too to keep measuring cups and spoons handy when dining at home, so you can get an idea of what a "normal" portion looks like. It is basic education you do yourself, and it's very helpful.
There are all kinds of ideas, and a lot of support, to be found on this team. Post often, ask questions, keep busy...

I did Medifast diet same concept as Nutrisystem several years back, same thing lost a litlle weight but then would gain it back, I tried Nutrisystem and actually gained weight on that stuff, I called the 800# and asked if that was normal and they said yes it could make you gain weight.

I would not pay for those diets. They are all just big money-makers for the rich who run them and something like Nutri--System I think you only really learn to eat their prepared meals but not how to eat if you are not eating their prepared meals. There are tons of recipes on here that you can make and you can learn the proportions for everything so that they don't cost nearly as much as the prepared meals like NutriSystem and Jenny Craig and all those.

Hi, Carole. I was on Nutra-Systems eons ago. It, like any diet, works. The drawbacks I see are 1) the expense ($300+ a month) and 2) you have to go back to eating in the "real world". I would go see the dietician as a first step. Then I recommend either joining something like Weight Watchers where you get support and eat in the real world or do it through using Spark, which also is real world. It doesn't mean you won't regain weight, but if you look at it as achieving a healthy lifestyle rather than a diet, it makes a difference. Good luck!

Hello. My name is Carole and I have been a type 2 diabetic for many years. I had lost 25 pounds, gained it all back, decided to diet again and gained 5 more pounds. Went to a dr. yesterday and he is referring me to a dietician. Also he encouraged me to sign up for the Nutra-system D diet. Has anyone been on this?
