Great to have you with us, Alison. I find this team much more supportive than others I’ve belonged to... perhaps because we’re small. I know I’ll never be perfect, but I’m doing much better than before joining SP.

I'm Alison, I'm retired, age 67, and I live in Oregon. (I'm in Central Oregon, which is the high desert plateau; we don't get the constant rain that keeps the west side of Oregon so green and lush). I joined this team about a month ago after Gail told me about it. I'm single and I enjoying hiking and playing music with friends. I'm using this challenge to try to change some long term behaviors that have impeded my weight loss (occasional binging on sweet desserts). Although I am MUCH improved in not yielding to this bad habit, the temptation remains and occasionally trips me up.

For Aura......

I did one promoted by a company called Arbonne - very healthy clean eating plan and then you gradually add stuff back - discovered I have issues with gluten - I didn't eliminate it as a result but do minimize it and expect GI issues if I eat too much - thankfully lactose caused no issues as I LOVE cheese!

I am from western Colorado - gorgeous place and plenty of activities - especially now that the heat of summer is gone.

My habit for October is to do 10 minutes of "planned outside of my normal routine" movement at least 3 times per week.

In September I tracked my food everyday and stayed within my recommended limits - and I did well with it even with 2 weekend camping trips. I lost 8 pounds but have sort of stalled so now it is time to add something else.

It will be fun to see what other folks choose and get some ideas for the future.

Hi, I'm Gail, and I live near Toronto, Canada. I'll be 74 later this month and have been happily, married to my 2nd husband for 15 years. Between us we have 4 children and 3 grandchildren.

I'm joining this team because I love the idea of setting my own challenge each month.

For September I will do ST 3 times weekly. I actually started yesterday. I'm pretty good at aerobic exercise (walking and swimming), but need to do more ST.

Looking forward to meeting others on this team.

emoticon Team,
emoticon building healthy habits OMAT. I have a big task for September --- finding a diet better for my digestive system. Endocrinologist recommended elimination diets. I am still deciding, here are a few links. Any suggestions?

Hi, Judy, and welcome! It's good for me to narrow down what I'm working on to one thing. Otherwise, I get kind of carried away and burn myself out.

I am Fran from North Carolina, mid 70's and have fought with my eating habits for forever. Finally decided that advice to take one thing at a time and overcome it before moving on really means take ONE thing at a time! I had been trying to get in my steps, drink my water, track my food, check in on SP (which often turns in to an hour or more at the computer - it's addictive!). About 3 weeks ago I made a chart to attack my afternoon "graze" and focus on only that for 35 days. My challenge was to have no afternoon snack unless I was really hungry, and then to have a healthy, planned snack. I resisted snacking most days because even a healthy snack for me could lead to eating some of everything in the kitchen. On day 14 I was truly hungry and allowed myself a cheese stick with a glass of water and it was sufficient. I am now on day 26 and notice that I don't have that urge to just go in the kitchen and eat at 4 or 4:30. I have only had a few days when I really got hungry enough to have a snack, and then I have had a small, healthy snack with water and haven't had to fight the urge to have more. The battle is not totally won, but it has improved dramatically.

So, this is exactly the group I need to be in as I work on other things I need to change, and I am ready to tackle the next item on my list. Very glad to have found you, thanks to May.

A thoughtful conversation between friends.

Piglet: "Why, it's today!"
Pooh: "Oh, good. That's my favorite day!"

May I'm so glad you are part of the OMAT team. I like how you are focused on healthy habits rather than weight loss. That's my focus as well.

Our son in law is Canadian. His family is in Windsor, Ontario. I imagine their winters aren't as severe as yours in Manitoba.

I have seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and get depressed in the winter. But feel better in spring/summer with more daylight hours and activity in the sun. I'm wondering if SAD affects many up there with even shorter winter days.

Sounds like you are doing well now. I hope you are enjoying having more free summer time from the school cafeteria.

Thank you for sharing your intro. Looking forward to sharing the journey to greater wellness.

Thought it might be time to tell you a little about myself. Joined SP Sept 2013, likely weighing somewhere around 140 pounds. Didn't interact much the first year since my basic personality was to go it alone. Losing weight has never been my primary goal. I think my journey involves living a healthier lifestyle, physically, mentally and spiritually. My subsequent year and 3/4 on Spark has been much more successful as I have learned a lot from my reading (still trying to make those things a habit) and have reached out to others as we have begun to walk this road together. My current weight is 123.2 but it is easy for me to fluctuate 5 pounds up or down on a regular basis. I deal with a lot of anxiety and stress, much less so since my 24 year old daughter moved in with her boyfriend. I have never been married (again the going it alone theme). I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CANADA where our winters are brutal (just warning you . . . I will be complaining in a few months). I am not yet retired although left the competitive work force 25 years ago to raise my daughter. I have several little jobs which keep me occupied (active); delivering flyers, lunch supervisor at an elementary school (off for the summer), cleaning the church . . . I love to read, ride my bike and am even learning to be comfortable interacting with others. This is a big change for me. I am familiar with depression but at this time it is not an issue.
I am really glad to have found this team. I look forward to getting to know everyone better.

Isn't it wonderful that this clan is growing and going strong! SPARK has given us a branch to rest on and find friends of a feather.....

We can do this together. This group respects everyone's right do it their way and if you find that's not working plenty of suggestions are shared if requested. I love the gentleness around here.

Yay, Dawn's here! I'm so happy to see you. (Backstory for those who don't know: Dawn and I have three husbands between us, but she was being awesome one day and I said "marry me?" and she accepted, so we're SparkEngaged. I'm thinking it'll be a long engagement. emoticon

(But seriously folks, all joking aside, this woman is one of the reasons Sparking is working for me this time around. She's good-natured, fun, sane, and loving, and we're lucky to have her as a new OMATter.)

My first two days of July didn't go very well, all told, but I had a great one today. Will post more about it on the July thread.

Love to all!

My name is Dawn. I put "Success" at the end of my name to remind myself I will be successful.

I lost my weight and hit goal using a doctor-supervised very low calorie diet. Because I didn't LEARN anything most of it came back. My highest weight was 222. This morning I am 187 after a dismal, epic fail yesterday which was triggered by a disappointing weigh in.

I want to learn more about myself. I'm self-reflective, and typically an upbeat person. I started vlogging a while ago as a way to hold myself more accountable. I don't know how much of a difference it's making in my journey to get healthier, but it does make me feel better so I keep doing it. Well, and it keeps me from throwing up my hands and quitting. It does do that for me.

I am in Connecticut. I am dual-income-no-kids by choice. I have a 17 year old cat. I'm weird and quirky. I like crazy adventures like scuba, race cars (driving) and hang gliding. I am bored easily, which is dangerous. I am overcoming a perfectionist mentality and trying to quiet that mean voice in my head. My internal dialogue Mean-Dawn can be really cruel. I'm trying to shift that with varying success.

II want to reach my goal weight, which means the doctor recommended weight to minimize my risk for diabetes, in a SUSTAINABLE way. I am still struggling with the thought it needs to come off fast. I've lost a net of 10 pounds since January, and i can honestly attribute even that much to a Spring challenge I participated in.

I've joined one other challenge that is not working for me. Although it's given me some interesting insights into myself, I don't find I'm getting the kind of networking or support that works for me. I won't be returning to that challenge when it ends. As I cast my eye around for "what next" to help me achieve my goals, I naturally thought of OMAT. I say "naturally" because my SparkBeloved Serene-Again is here as well as my inspiring friend Ithidriel.

I am still deciding on my goals for July. I want to really think about it. So let me stick my toes in the water, wiggle them a bit, and I'll dive into the deep end soon!

My name is Dawn, Eastern Time

Hello - I am Sharon from Michigan - married 50 years in May emoticon ... no kids ... retired. I have been on SP for several years, initially lost 30 lbs. but have gained and regained ten of it for several years now. I lost to an all time low last year while providing care for my mom who was very ill -- she died in August at age 90 and within 3 months I gained 20 lbs....and I am struggling to get back into healthy habits! This team appeals to me as I can do anything for a short period of time. Thank you for the warm welcome. I am looking forward to getting to know each of you! emoticon

Go Gwen! DH had that surgery last year. It did take awhile to heal.

Hi OMAT team,

Debbie emoticon
Marbeall, it's been a little cloudy here in FL; we are expecting some rain today/tomorrow.
I was able to get my 45 min outside walk in this morning though. I am trying to get back into my brisk walking routine after having Meniscus surgery back in August.

I have been tracking consistently for a week now...on to week 2 emoticon

Wishing everyone a wonderful day emoticon

Debbie we are a pretty loose group. After the intro I find most people post on the wall or lengthy posts in the current month. Like now is the Feb board. I usually watch the dates so I can catch if someone posts in a different place. Like I said few rules and lots of caring around here. It is great seeing so many newcomers!! Welcome again to all of you.

Hi everyone. I am looking forward to being part of this team. It might take me a while to figure out how and where to post things but please feel free to let me know if I post in the wrong place. I hope we can have a successful journey with the help and support of one another.

GREAT!! Thanks so much for sharing MEMEQ2 :-)

Yup, eating right and exercising DO make you feel so much better. Right now I am really really living that. I recently switched to Paleo nutrition and I am reaping the rewards every single day. Real food. My body is loving it!! WOOHOO!!

ONWARD!!

Hello everyone. I've been on this journey for a while and I'm still a work in progress. My motivation has it highs and lows but I know that I need to stick with it for health reasons.

I live in snowey western New York with my husband and youngest son who is 19. I'm trying to stay active instead of just hibernate this winter. I really believe that eating right and exercising make you feel so much better.

I'm looking forward to sharing tips, ideas & support with the team.

Hi Gwen!

I am so very happy that you found us!! I also love that you love the idea of this team. :-)

I really like the idea of having a month long challenge but the ones that Spark People put out there never really quite fit me so they never really worked for me. Plus, since those challenges were somebody else's idea and somebody else's plan, I just wasn't really invested in them. That's why OMAT works where other monthly challenges may not. YOU know what's best for you and YOU know what you need to work on. So here, YOU are in the driver's seat and we are all along for ride, right there with you.

Browse around the group and please feel free to ask anything you'd like. As you are probably starting to see, we are a very accepting, welcoming, and supportive group. :-)

Looking forward to getting to know you and encouraging you along your way!! :-)

Hi Gwen and again welcome to the team. I liked this idea too of one month at a time. I live in N. FL in a small town, Perry. DH and I are retired too and enjoying our kids and grands (13). Well mostly we enjoy them, at times hide from them.. emoticon

Hi,
My name is Gwen and I live in a small town in Florida with DH. We are both retired and loving it :) We have 3 adult children and 2 grands.
I love the name and concept of this team; making monthly goals for myself. My first goal is to be consistent on my journey to a healthy new lifestyle.
Looking forward to being part of this team!!

Serene I saw where you posted that you like to challenge yourself. I think that's why this team works for me. I am in charge of finding what works for me and what doesn't. Hope all goes well for you. Take care.
