Hi, my name is Mary and I never had to worry about my weight until I hit premature menopause at the age of 43. I then gained 20lbs. Then two years ago in June I quit smoking. I was never a heavy smoker, kind of social, but then that started to get worse. I gained another 10lbs after I quit. I have been trying to lose weight for two years now. I work out and I am active, however I am having a hard time losing. I was diagnosed with thyroid and now on meds. My blood work and pressure etc all healthy. I went on weight watchers and loss 20lbs (since have gained 4lbs back) and I started to get bored with their meetings not to mention paying $42 a month! I was on sparkpeople years ago and for some reason completely forgot all about it until I cancelled my ww and decided I needed to have "something." Then I remembered spark. Boy, am I glad I did. The website is updated a lot since the time I used it. I love it. I am taking my time learning everything on the site. I didn't even open mail when first joined. I wanted to just concentrate on tracking. I am still investigating all the different links. I have uploaded the spark app and recipes to my iphone. I LOVE IT. Spark is so much more user friendly than ww. I love the scanner and the gps for my walks. Thank you Spark!

Mary

To Tiffany...my name is Tina, I read your intro and was quite touched. I was married 6 years without children, dropped 75 pounds, and conceived two sons who are now 39 and 40. So, do not give up, stay on program and leave it in God's hands. I have been overweight all of my life, I am new to SP, found through First Magazine, I was looking for the motivational assistance to couple with my own program. I have lost 145 pounds since June 2010 and about 1/2 way to goal (100 on Jenny then 45 on my own). I am 66 years old, am remarkably active and attribute the better nutrition habits to this outcome. You be good to yourself on this journey.

Hi everyone!

My name is Tiffany and I'm 32. I'm currently at the heaviest I've EVER been (just got on the scale Sunday and cried when I read the number). I found this website from a magazine that I was reading and thought I'd give it a try.

I'm still trying learn my way around everything, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. Its very interactive and has a lot of really good information (plus I like the rewards for doing certain parts everyday, helps with the motivation for me :))

Me and my husband have been trying to start a family for about 3 years now with no luck. I'm sure a good portion of the reason as to why is that we are both very overweight. I'd like to try to lose so that I can have a healthy and happy baby (as well as have a better chance of getting pregnant in the first place).

My long term goal is to be down at least 100 pounds, 120-140 would make me ecstatic and to have my asthma managed and under control.

Short term goals are to get my sleep in each night, drink my water during the day, and get in at least 20 minutes of exercise 3 times per week.

Can't wait to get to know all of you :)

Hello!! My name is Jessica!

What brings me to SparkPeople... I really want to head into my 30's healthier then I have ever been in my 20's. I also want to start a family but I know I need to get stronger and develop better habits to have the best pregnancy I can.

My long term goals... Lose 175 pounds, give up refined sugar, give up non-natural sources of caffeine, completely quit binge eating.

My short term goals... Complete Jillian Michaels Body Revolution, quit smoking, find ways to cope other then binge eating.

Things I've done in the past to try and lose weight... Weight Watchers, Slim Fast, extreme calorie restrictions, working out with out changing my diet, smoking, healthy diet and exercise ( I lost 25 pounds before stress sent me reeling into a binge disorder)

hello, my name is Anne. My willpower is zero when it comes to food-mainly sweets. I feel guilty later. I am hoping to receive encouragement to lose the weight and keep it off this time. I have suffered several medical issues such broken ankle, fractured foot, herniated disc-which limits physical activity. I want to find a way to get off this emotional roller coaster and get healthy. I wish you all luck on your weight loss journey. Pray for me.

Thanks,

Anne

Hi, my name is Lily and I'm 33 years old. My username is just that - Lily and threes.

I have always been happy with the way I look, until about two years ago. Suddenly there were little rolls and lumps and sags where there had never been. I found myself wearing stretchy fabrics instead of fitted clothes - I really jumped on the legging bandwagon! I was weighed recently and I am at my heaviest weight ever. For awhile I think was in denial.

As of yesterday, I am getting married in almost exactly one year. I don't want to feel about my body on my wedding day the way I do today. I want to lose about 20 pounds before then, and feel great in my body - inside and out.

I used to be very active. I played softball and swam in high school and played on intramural teams in college. A few years ago, i had a major surgery that left me with most of my spine fused.

My biggest goal is to not be someone who lets that dictate my life anymore. It would be so easy to sit back and just not try because it's too hard, and I will never get back to where I was before the surgery. I don't want to sit back and watch the weight go up and my health deteriorate year after year. I want to push myself to get to the best I can now, and stop comparing my body's limits to what they were before.

I would love to find a few friends here on sparkpeople - to share ideas with and help with motivation - my biggest problem I have found!

Hi my name is Angela
I'm brand new to Sparkpeople, I never even heard of it until I saw it mentioned on a website where I was looking up recipes and someone commented below the recipe to check out Sparkpeople to help lose weight, so here I am.

When I first joined a few days ago I went straight to the recipes and browsed them. I'm slowly getting to all the other things it has to offer.
I'm really hoping I can get motivated again, eat less junk (sugar) and eat healthier, & exercise more so I can maybe one day stop taking blood pressure medicine and just live a healthier lifestyle, and lose weight.

I want to stop snacking so much especially at night, I'm trying to make better choices on what I choose, I also want to exercise on a daily basis for at least 30 minutes and work on making healthier meals.

Things I've tried before was watching Dr. oz and learning about healthier food choices, and worked out to some of the videos listed. I bought a book called "Choose to Lose" by Chris Powell it's the 7 day carb cycle solution, I drank lots of water like a gallon a day and I walked each day starting out with 1 mile and worked my way up to 3 miles, also worked out on my elliptical every other day for minimum of 30 mins & worked up to 55 mins a day.

Setbacks for sure! I live in Henderson NV and have only my husband to keep me company & he works rotating shifts which is rough on sleeping and often causes loneliness. So I use the tv to keep me company. I quit working 2 years ago & there went my motivation to stay active. I have 2 small chiwawas mainly to keep me company. I do take them on walks occasionally, one can walk on a leash & the other refuses to be on a leash so I carry him in his carry bag, they sleep more then anything during the day. I have 3 grown kids and family in Ca so I travel a few times a year for visits, this is where I usually fall off my healthy routine. I try to walk when I'm there but I am weak and tend to make other things more priority, doesn't help that I end up going out to eat more often too.

I dont have any disabilities to stop me from working out or going for walks except for myself. I really don't like walking or exercising by myself. I also get sore when I do workout, I try not to let that stop me but it does most times. I'm currently 49 soon to be 50 in a week and I am feeling things changing in my body so I know it's even more important to stay on top of things now. I'm really hoping I can stick with this site cause I do need lots of support on my journey to a better and healthier lifestyle.
My stress levels can get out of hand and that tends to take my focus away. I currently have a son who is 22 and has been in the Army for 3years, he has 3 more years to go but now is stationed in the states, a little less stress but I'm sure it's a matter of time before he is deployed, I also have a son who is 24 has a family of his own but struggles each payday to make the bills, other things contribute to my stress as well like my aging mother of 86 and just being so far away from family. I'm hoping to get out of the house more maybe volenteer somewhere.
So please feel free to contact me with any support you may be able to give to keep me on track. Maybe I can get to know a few of you to help you as well, I enjoy meeting and talking to people.
I wish every one lots of luck on their on endeavors to a healthier lifestyle.

I'm not sure how this posting works, I meant to introduce myself to all of you but I think I'm responding to someone's post ! Newbie what can I say emoticon

Hi! I'm Erika and my username really is just associated with my artwork online. :)

But, I was introduced to spark people long time ago, but left and came back thanks to a bodybuilding.com forum. Calorie counting the first couple of times left me frustrated because I did the wrong way and was starving myself. But the interface and the community here looks great that I don't have to worry about that. :)

My goals are to lose fat and build muscle and to balance my nutrients, both macro and micro; even with allergies and other things.

My interests are art, animals animation, cosplay, and bodybuilding (natural of course). And above all spreading the love of God and His Word. If you need a kind word and sound advice, I'm your girl. Nice to meet you all! :D

Hello my name is Brenda and my user name is well you can guess yes it is my first initial and my last name. Don't know what the number is because Spark's picked my username for me. I will get around to changing it soon. I am a wife of a National Guard soldier for 24 years who is being deployed to Afghanistan in March for a year. We have two girls and one son. One daughter has two daughters and the other daughter has a son. I enjoy my grandchildren and I'm loosing weight so that I can play with them more. But most of all I am loosing weight for myself, because what I think of myself means more to me than anything. I also want to look good for my husband when he gets back.

Hello My Name is Victoria. My user name is a combination of my childhood love I used to be a competitive roller skater, and graduated high school in 1988 which is also the year I quit skating so being an athlete used to be my way of life, many hours of hard work and without realizing it exercise. When I quit at 18 my body started to change, now 40 something years old and a 20 year old son later it is changing yet again. I weighed 120 for years now for the last 10 I fluctuate between 160 and 165. I'm only 5 feet tall so this is a problem for me. I need to drop at least 40 pounds so I will feel better for me :)

Hello!! My name is Mariya :)

What my username means to me: well, I'm an artist and my favorite color is purple.

What brings me to SparkPeople: I have been trying to lose weight for a very long time now. I first joined the site a few years back but didn't stick with it. I'm hoping I will this time! What got me to pick it back up this time is I was laying here in bed and I looked over to see food wrappers beside my bed. And I remembered how earlier in the day my favorite pants weren't gonna zip up. I've decided something's gotta change. I lost 40 pounds between last August and May but I'm gaining it all back. And I'm not okay with that so I'm gonna focus on getting healthy again :)

My long term goals: I would like to reach the goal weight of 200 and to keep the weight off. I would like to live an active life style. Active enough to hike frequently, I would love to see more of this beautiful state I call home! (CO)

My short term goals: develop a healthier diet and exercise daily

Things I've done in the past to try and lose weight: usually I focus on one aspect with extreme obsession like specifically targeting fitness or specifically targeting diet and letting the other fall behind so I get discouraged.

Anyways! Can't wait to meet new folks and to make this life change :)

Hello Everyone, my name is Michelle and I am very excited to get started on my weightloss victory! In aug of this year I weighed 260. In the last 2 months I have managed to bring my weight down to 242 on my own but need motivation sometimes. This last month I was told I am a prediabetic. I refuse to go down that path so now i have to bust my butt to get down to a healthy weight and fitness level. I want to be fit! I want to be able to run a 5K or a fun run. Something I can measure for myself! So excited to make new friends and lose this weight!

Hi my name is Carol. First of all sorry i should have hit "reply" instead of starting a new topic. That's just me being a newbie. I'd like to lose weight to be healthier and to hopefully reduce my blood pressure, at this point i'm scared to have it taken. Also i spend a lot of time feeling overwhelmed and would like to get some balance into my life. Ever since I decided to try and lose weight, all I think about is food. At this point in my life it seems to be my go to for enjoyment. It's how I sooth myself and reward my self and beat boredom. I also use it when I get thru my anxiety attacks. My anxiety and depression i'm sure are rooted in my low self esteem. I'm scared to start this because i've never completed anything i've started. I just hope I can see this thru. I'm optimistic and going to keep at it as best i can. I'm happy to be here with all of you. emoticon

Hello!! My name is...Amy

What brings me to SparkPeople... I have been a nurse for 24 years and am working on my Family Nurse Practitioner degree. I dread beginning my practicum while morbidly obese. Who wants to see a NP who is a size 26-28? I have to lose weight and keep it off.

My long term goals... normal BMI

My short term goals...better blood pressure readings and less achy joints

Things I've done in the past to try and lose weight... What haven't I tried! Diet pills, Weight Watchers, TOPS, cabbage soup diet, Dr Fuhrman, vegetarian, low carb . . . I have been dieting for 30 years. I could teach classes on nutrition, I just can't stick to it, myself.

Setbacks I've had...I am a Type A perfectionist. I do well on ANY diet - until I mess up. Then I eat everything in sight. I have lost and gained and lost and gained . . . 2 years ago, I lost 60 lbs on a no flour, no sugar, no potato, no rice diet. I felt great. I plateaued for 2 months and my co-workers insisted that I needed to give my body a break by eating other foods so that I could lose weight again. I gained back all 60 lbs plus another 30 lbs! Disgusting.

Limitations I may have... I am also beginning my 3rd year of returning to school, with 3 more years to go. I also work full-time 12 hr night shifts. My sleep and eating are messed up and the only exercise I get is walking at work. I spend 12-15 hours in front of the computer every day. I am on a beta blocker for my high blood pressure, which slows everything down - including my metabolism and makes me feel tired. I also live in the country and need to drive 15 minutes to work out, which is impossible because of cost and time.

More about me. . . I am married with 4 children, ages 15-23. My husband has severe osteoarthritis and is disabled. We live on a 5 acre mini farm and have pigs, 7 pygmy goats, dogs, and cats. I am a livestock 4-H adviser. I am very excited about my future as an NP, except for this extra weight issue.

Hi! My name is Melissa. I am 23, a recent college graduate with a Bachelors in Public Health from East Tennessee State University. I have gained weight through college due to stress eating (one of the worst things to do!).

My user name is ETSUCowgirl, of course the ETSU came from my beloved college and the Cowgirl is because I was always known as the country girl in the department of public health.

My main reasons for wanting to lose 76 lbs is in order to be healthier mentally and physically, to look better for my very amazing and encouraging boyfriend, and to lead as an example to others I try to educate as a health counselor at a local free clinic.

My two areas of focus are going to be NUTRITION and EXERCISE!!

Hi, my name is Jennifer.
My Username is Just Me! :)
I need to feel better and knowing I'm almost 40 and diabetes loves my family~I'm also an ideal candidate, it's time to literally get off my butt.
Setbacks? I just don't like to exercise and I love processed foods. *sigh*
I'm ready though, I need to be a better role model for my daughter and for my patients! It's hypocritical to be the fat nurse. emoticon
Best of Luck to you all on your journey!

Hi everyone!
I wanted my username to be marjattamusiikki which is a Finnish version of my name and the Finnish word for Music, but it was too long. So instead of the Finnish word for Music it is now the Swedish word for Music.

Hmm what to say {this is always the hardest part!} I hope this isn't gonna be a long one..

I'm 21, currently going to Uni to major in Psych and minor in English and {MAYBE} Anthropology. I would like to focus on adolescence particularly those suffering with Eating Disorders as in high school I dealt with EDNOS {Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified} which my therapist labeled because I tended to lean more towards Bulimia but it wasn't severe enough to put me in a Rehab.

I am vegan. I made the transition from being vegetarian about two years ago and I consider it one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I am admittedly a very {VERY} competitive person and tend to put myself down if I don't do as well or better than others. I'm trying to get over this.

I try to exercise at least 4 times a week, this is what I have learned makes me feel the best.
I don't want to lose any weight, just gain muscle and tone up the more flabby areas.

I'm a very open person, I love to chat about anything and everything!

Hello!! My name is... Julie

What my username means to me... It's just a partial grouping of letters from my name... but I did just get married so I'm excited that I've got new ones!

What brings me to SparkPeople... I just keep gaining! I've used Sparkpeople before with success at weight loss, and when I met my (now) husband, I got out of the habit and have been putting the weight on ever since. I'm now at my highest weight ever, and I feel unhealthy. I came back to Sparkpeople because I know that this plan works!

My long term goals... I want to get to a healthy weight and maintain healthy eating and exercise habits.

My short term goals... Stop eating out/cook more meals at home, limit my intake of sugary drinks, and do some sort of exercise at least 3 days a week.

Things I've done in the past to try and lose weight... Sparkpeople, and it worked! I've never really done any "diets," either fad diets or the approved things like Weight Watchers or meal plans or the exercise tapes. But I've tried an failed a number of times at eating healthier and exercising more.

Setbacks I've had... I've had a lot of issues with depression and anxiety, and I think that really goes hand in hand with the weight issue. I've always had a really hard time staying or getting back on track when I'm not feeling well mentally.

Hello!! My name is pam.

What my username means to me, is I love to to camp, we have a seasonal campsite months of the year, which I have to close this week and it makes me sad. I am a nana to 3 and one on the way grand children.

I have been on Spark people many times, but gaining weight again so I am back. I guess I need to stick to something and not keep starting over this time.

My long term goals are to loose weight, eat healthier, exercise more.

My short term goals are to eat less junk food and pop, drink more water, walk on my treadmill in the morning before work.

I have never really ever had a weight problem till I started getting older and have a sit down job. The pounds just come on so easy now.

I have joined spark so many times and not followed through but this time I want to do this!

I am 49 soon to be 50 in a couple of weeks, I want to be healthy for me and my family and enjoy my older years ahead. I want to make the most of every day.

Pam

Its a question I get a lot as a personal trainer. The good thing to know, even women who look like models point to the same areas you are mentioning to lose weight. The "bad" news is there isn't a machine that takes that weight off, its bodyfat which means what you eat will have a larger effect than any machine.

A machine will increase you muscle mass in those areas if done on a consistent basis, which is a good thing to build core strength. But even if you have the perfectly built muscles in that area, you wont see them because you'll still have a "pillow" of weight over those muscles. Muscle does burn fat, but not at the rates people think. So keep working out to create a lifestyle of fitness but its your diet that will decrease your mid-section.

Proud to have lost 60lbs after a lifetime of being overweight. Became a personal trainer, health coach, and... gained 30lbs of it back. Now its all about getting back to where I was.

Hello!! My name is... Lucy

What my username means to me... After trying what many names this one was not in use. Doesn't have any meaning.

What brings me to SparkPeople... I need to lose weight. I feel like I have hit a metal rock bottom.

My long term goals... To feel better about myself and stop saying no to so many fun things because of my weight.

My short term goals...Get on track. I need some momentum.

Things I've done in the past to try and lose weight... I lost it all on Weight Watchers and have gained it back.

Setbacks I've had... Have not figured out the why.

Hello!! My name is... Donna

What my username means to me... Life is short. We need to live each day as though it were our last, laugh out loud every day and love what we do!

What brings me to SparkPeople... I've been with SparkPeople for a long time, and enjoy being part of the team! I love the articles, the information, earning SparkPoints, and the support that is available here!

My long term goals... To live a healthy happy life, and teach others that leading a healthy lifestyle is awesome! To teach my 3 year old granddaughter healthy habits by example

My short term goals... Journal everything I eat for 30 days, lose 5 pounds before Christmas,

Things I've done in the past to try and lose weight...If there is something out there, I have tried it. Fen Fen, Weight Watchers (more than once before I was successful), Fasting, cabbage soup, and lots of others

Setbacks I've had... I got to my goal weight with Weight Watchers in 2006. I maintained my goal weight for 5 years, then slid a bit. In 2012 I got back to goal weight, and am happy to say that I've successfully maintained my goal weight for 13 months now

Limitations I may have... I don't have any limitations! I have arthritis in my knees, back, neck, along with other ailments, but I don't let that stop me. I'm living life as it comes to me every day.

More about me...I'm married to the love of my life, we celebrated our 30th anniversary in July. I have 2 great kids, a daughter (28) and son (26), and a wonderful 3 year old granddaughter. I retired last month at age 51! I worked in the accounting field, managing the finance department for a software company. Now I am puddle jumping and playing with my 3 year old granddaughter 3 days a week. I love to run, and challenge myself to get in at least 15,000 steps per day.

Hello!! My name is... Trina

What my username means to me... I have always had a low self esteem. I've also been treated for depression in the past. I feel like I'm still trying to find myself.

What brings me to SparkPeople... I have been here so many times I can't even remember how many. In the past it was always about trying to lose as much weight as I can as fast as I can. Then my Mom was admitted in the hospital about 2 years ago with extremely high blood pressure. Both the top and the bottom #'s were higher than the Dr at emerge had ever seen in a patient that was not admitted from a heart attack or stroke. My Mom was lucky to catch it before it happened. Heart disease runs in my family and low sodium and not drinking alcohol WAS NOT enough for my Mom. I am even bigger than she is. I DO NOT want to be in that emergency room in 20 years from now. It's not about losing weight this time, it's about being a healthier person all around. I don't carte how long it will take me to hit my long term goal, as long as I'm making progress - I'm going to around longer than if I didn't make that change.

My long term goals... I'm aiming for the high end of what the BMI says I should be for my height. I want to avoid heart disease.

My short term goals... At this moment I am focusing on raising my metabolism again. To do that I am reducing my pop intake, increasing my water intake. Making sure to find time for strength training. Continue with my cardio. Concentrate on eating more fruits/veggies and protein. Reduce processed foods and concentrate on foods with more fibre.

Things I've done in the past to try and lose weight... As I said before, I've been on here many times. I would exercise like a maniac so that I could eat whatever I wanted...obviously failed at that one. I've tried eating less than the tracker suggests and do a lot of exercise...ya that ended up hurting me in the long run. I've always been against diets pills and against any of that "diet" stuff on the market, mainly because I'm too cheap LOL, but also because it falls into the too good too be true category and they always seem to be fads.

Setbacks I've had... I've had to learn how to accept success. If I lose a pound or two I wouldn't be happy, I'd wait a couple more weeks just to make sure it was gone before I got excited about it. I was physically and emotionally abused throughout my entire childhood which is why I have problems with self esteem. It's hard to love yourself when you were raised to put yourself down. I do not have any injuries or health conditions right now that are obstacles, luckily.

Limitations I may have... none

More about me... I'm 32 years old, mother of 5 - 4 boys (12,11, and 2 1/2 yr old twins) and 1 girl (almost 6 months old). I was running my own private daycare but haven't been able to yet since the baby. I'm hoping that I can find some children to watch starting in January. I live in Ontario (Canada) which is why every now and then you'll read something that sounds a little different LOL. Like fibre or flavour. I'm pretty good at keeping things in pounds and miles and ounces instead of kg, km, and ml. When I don't (which happens when I talk about km) I usually convert it - same with temperature, I convert it too. I've been having relationship issues which really effects my progress some days but it's something I need to learn to work through, but with the bf and with a healthier lifestyle.

Anything you want to know?? Feel free to ask. I'm an open book.

I made my introduction quite personal - no worries if you're not comfortable being that open. You can share as much or as little as you'd like =]
