I know exactly what you are talking about because this is exactly where I was 12 years ago - as I stood I got progressively more painful until I had to sit down. Do you know where the stenosis is and what is causing it? There are a bunch of different things that could cause this and treatments vary depending on cause. The level of symptoms that you have should be having some kind of treatment especially if you are getting worse. Do you have health insurance? Will you have it come January 1? Walking may not be the best thing for you to start with. You may want to start with strengthening your core but you should work with a physical therapist/MD to make sure you are doing exercises that will not make you worse.

In my case the stenosis was where my sciatic nerves exited the vertebrae. I had a laminectomy on both sides (removed the top of the vertebrae on the sides to stop the pinching) and fused the vertebrae so it wouldn't build up more bone in the future. Best thing I ever did - yeah it still hurts if I overdo it or the weather is changing but it is nothing like it was. What was in my favor was that it was only at one vertebrae. And you don't want just anyone doing this surgery. You need to get to a high rated neurosurgeon. But first you need to figure out what it is.

I need encouragement to exercise by walking. My legs hurt and back hurts if I am on my feet for more than about 10 minutes. I love to substitute teach but dread walking the kids to their elective classes or the cafeteria. If we have to stop for restroom break, the tingling and pain sometimes gets so bad, I'm afraid of falling down. It is hard for me to stand up straight so I tend to hump over which looks really bad. Don't want to take a cane as I'm afraid they will think I am a liability and tell me I'm too disabled to teach. That is my only means of support. The good news is when I sit down, the pain subsides. However, to lose this weight and to help build bone (have osteoporosis), I need to walk.
