That's a good point - enjoy the food you're eating more!!

I love the keto food, and so does my DH but he's not yet willing to go total keto. We'll see. You can't push ANYONE into eating a certain way. They have to decide for themselves.

I've quit telling people unless they ask.

DONNA,

my taste preferences changed over the first 6 months. By the end of 6 months, for whatever reason, I was eating vegetable and enjoying them. Now I love all sorts of raw veggies, and trust me, that was something I never liked. I felt like a traitor to my self.

But you don't like cauliflower, and now you're eating it for snacking ... what the heck!

So what it meant for me, was that though there are things I stopped eating, there were also things I started liking. Today part of dinner was a fantastic salad, with kale, shredded cabbage, ... (yah, and I used to hate salad).

My sense of smell got keener too, as did my sense of taste. When I eat a steak now, I really take it in. So I enjoy what I eat now much more.

James

Thank you so much for that. My husband supports me but he doesn't want to participate. He doesn't think he can do without bread. I made him breakfast today and he liked it. I haven't told him yet that it was Keto friendly. His was the same as mine except I added veggies to mine which he doesn't like. I added some meat and garlic cheese to his and he loved it.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. That helps me keep going. I'm usually not very good at sticking to a diet but this one seems to be easier for me. I have enjoyed the meals I had for the first 2 days. Last night I cooked up my dinner and had some left over and my oldest son ate it and loved it. My husband and younger son are not interested but I tell them all about the diet anyway. So far I have lost 3 lbs and I am sure that is water but it gives me hope. I haven't been hungry at all and that makes this so much easier.

Hello Donnajean:

Happy to meet you and glad to see you have joined the group.

I know you will get excellent advice and help here.

I am pretty new to KETO myself. I had done it for 8 weeks and then fell off the wagon. I went away for a few days and went off - it took me awhile to get back on, but I truly believe it is working for me (I want to lose weight).

Take it slow... Good luck!

I'll echo a little of what KDGIRL wrote.

The first days of eating keto, are the hardest, so the first 3 days, at least for me. Dizzy at times, hungry at times. You can think this is unhealthy, and your bodies reactions are telling you that. But what your body is telling you is that it is addicted to carbs.

Then over the next two weeks your body adjusts and your energy comes back.

Longer term, like in the next few months you may have mental cravings, like thoughts of how good a banana split would taste, or similar. Now its part of your primitive brain trying to hijack your rational mind.

You've seen others on the main discussion post about cravings recently and eating a little extra protein. They've done very well in eating a little more of something, but not pulling out a bag of chocolate chip cookies.

You're going to do well here. We provide both advice on practical things, but also moral support.

You have a powerful motivation to make keto work - I think a lot of people just use it for the weight loss aspect, but I think the healing properties of keto far outweigh just losing weight.

That being said - the first few weeks may not be easy. Don't give up. You can do it, and you will feel so much better when you get all that glycogen out of your system and your body starts running on fat!

Take some pictures so you can see how far you've come in a few months!! Do some measurements as well then tuck them away for another day.

Welcome Donna Jean!

I started this WOE last spring, march I think and I have successfully taken off 26 lbs (as of this morning!!). I am only 4 lbs away from my goal weight, which I have already lowered once. I feel great.

I exercise regularly....but I do agree totally with James. Weight loss is 95% about the food. I have always exercised but only lose when I am eating properly.

Nice to have you here!

Elizabeth

That is really good to hear. I really hope it will work well for me too. That makes me really hopeful. I was really down after watching a video about medications that can cause weight gain and hamper weight loss efforts. I'm on several.

Donna,
I don't have the autoimmune diseases that you have, but another one, ulcerative colitis. I was on anti-inflammatory medication for that for a long time, I can't remember, 15 years, 20 years?

When I started eating Keto my digestion got way better. It took about 3 months to clearly notice that it wasn't just me thinking it was better. But by 6 months I was off the medications.

I don't think its exactly Keto that cured it, but more like not eating things that bothered me. I can only guess that it was something like wheat that my body didn't manage well, and I didn't know that because I kept eating it (bread, breakfast cereal, cookies, cake ...).

Don't worry about not exercising. People want to be pro-active and exercise away the body fat, but the truth it its 95% what you eat. Exercise for fitness, but not weight loss.

I'm now 8 years medication free from my ulcerative colitis. The body takes time to heal itself, it isn't change what you eat and you're fixed in two weeks. So give it some time. You should feel better in just a few weeks though.

James

I know grains, soy and soy products...Common Sense Keto on Facebook may have a list. They are quite radical but there is really good information there

Thank you. I'm still learning about what foods cause inflammation. Do you know a good reference for that?

Hi Donnajean and WELCOME!!! Keto is great for inflammation if you are strict. I have chronic pain, and keto has greatly helped that!! Well done to your siblings for their success!! You will be there soon, too!

I'm starting Keto today, Nov 1. I have Fibromyalgia and Psoriatic Arthritis (and autoimmune disease) and deal with a lot of chronic pain and fatigue all the time, every day. I had to quit my job about 8 years ago and I have steadily gained weight. I have a hard time exercising because I start having pain whenever I do. I try to do small amounts at a time. I can usually only do walking or cycling about 10 minutes before I have to stop. This makes it very hard to lose weight. I have starting doing Restorative yoga (yin) and that is helping me feel better some. My muscles are all very tight. My sister, BIL and oldest brother have been doing the Keto diet and it is working well for them all. My sister has lost 25 lbs. My BIL has lost 60 and my oldest brother has lost 70. They said they read it is good for lowering inflammation. I take medications that lower inflammation and I'm hoping this diet will help enough that I can stop taking some of them. I believe some of the fatigue is caused by the medications and I think I would feel a lot better without it.
