Holly you should post a "what to do" and "what not to do" list. Not everything will apply to everyone, but you have such a wide breadth of knowledge and especially for a lot of people just starting out, it might be helpful!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

i'm sure you will be!! i had zero clue what i was doing at first...thats why i read everything i could get my hands on. then i got confused with all the different theories of how to do it, each contradicting the other..and thats when i started watching the people having the most success, and they all seemed to be pretty much doing the same thing, with very few differences. the ones saying they were always stalled, or gaining, or whatever, i also watched what they did, and they were always doing things the successful ones were saying not to do.
its all a learning process!!

So you've lost 128 lbs (looking at your ticker)
That is beyond awesome! emoticon
Did you lose it all by keto? and yeah, a cholesterol of 122 at a high weight is something.

I'm just going to eat a healthy ketogenic diet (from now on) and see what happens with those numbers.

Also - (still on reading) - I live in San Antonio. A huge town, for sure. Tons of libraries. But the BEST part of having a big library system is the Overdrive lending section. I can check out books on my Kindle. Maybe one of the larger towns in your state have lending libraries, so you can check out books, read them, and return them. I read way too much to buy (most) books. Ones I want to keep for reference are my exceptions.

My sister got her cholesterol done yesterday. She's 4'9", over 200 lbs., does not eat well and exercises not at all. Her total was 147, her HDL was 64 her LDL was 66 and her triglycerides were 86. Her doctor was ecstatic. She is not in good health at all. She can barely walk. But what the heck? He's happy because the numbers are good - (so is she) but she is not in good health at all. So numbers are not everything. My last cholesterol was well over 220 and my doctor was not happy. I do have good HDL, but my trigs were high too. So the body is a mysterious thing. I am in good health, and will not have labs done again until November. We'll see then. I'll have been keto for 10 months by then.

Renee,

I recognize you are an avid reader. I offer another reference. Dr Eric Westman he primarily is a YouTube persona. Worth a look as he has some good advice.

Dr Steven Phinney one of the authors of the Art and Science of Low Carb living has quite a few YouTube offerings associated with Low Carb down under.

Low Carb Breckenridge is another Youtube topic to check out.

good luck Dave

I need to have my doctor read Cholesterol Clarity. My HDL and LDL ratio was good, she said, but overall my cholesterol is 255. That's not THAT high, I don't think, but apparently she did. :/

I ordered my books from Amazon... they have a GREAT return policy if I happen to get one that doesn't fit me. :) The cookbook I ordered is Maria Emmerich's Keto Comfort Foods. I thought I might convince my family to join me if I can make "normal" dishes they are used to. :) I'm excited about the No-Cook recipes in the Keto information book by her.

The town I live in, well, near, has a population of about 1300 and a tiny library. I've been there looking for specific book a few times (years ago) and they never had what I was looking for, so I just gave up. I know they will try to get them, but I wasn't interested in the wait. I do wish we had a nice big library. I used to love just browsing... like in a bookstore, only I didn't need money! :)

Thank you again for all the nice things y'all said. I think this team is going to be a great help to me! and I hope I can end up being a help to others as well.

Welcome Renee. This is a great group for learning how to make the best choices for eating KETO. I started here Feb 1st and everyone has been so helpful. Many years ago I did Atkins also but I think you will find that the KETO way of eating is much better.
I read your Spark Page and thanks for sharing your story. Beautiful family and love the pretty birds too. Good luck to you.

Aloha Renee!! Mahalos for telling us your story!

i have to tell you..i GAINED on Atkins..keto is the very FIRST thing thats ever worked for me, and i had tried everything. i think you will do GREAT!!

really good book picks..Maria is wonderful..and she is always willing to help people if you ask. I liked Keto Clarity alot..it explained basics and backed up most of what i'd found myself. I have Dr Fungs book, also, it does not work for me, but some others have success with it.

another good one is Cholesterol Clarity, if you are worried about numbers. it explains why you dont need to be as worried about them.

I keep a notebook with keto recipes in it. i make things up all the time..some are great..others have a big red x through them..LOL!! Cooking has always been my passion (i'm a professional chef) so its second nature to make new things. its fun trying and gets me my kitchen fix.

Looking forward to cheering you on in your success!!

Hi Renee - welcome to keto!!

I'm similar to you - started out low carb, and with all the reading I've been doing, transitioned to keto. I heartily recommend the Obesity Code. Love Dr. Fung. I found The Complete Guide to Fasting good too - although if you're only getting one, go with the OC first.

I checked out Keto Clarity at the library. Eh. Read it and turned it back in. And I bought Maria Emmerich's cookbook. Still trying out recipes, although most times I just google "keto ____". I'm just cooking for me and my hubby, and although he is not keto, he eats what I cook.

I also feel like keto will fix me from the inside out. That is why I am not stressing about losing weight quickly.

Hi, I'm Renee'. I'm 53 years old, 5'7", currently 223.8 lbs. I live in Arkansas with my hubby, 4 grown kids, 2 dogs, 6 cats and 1 bird. :)

I'm here to change my life.

I have done low carb via old school Atkins Diet on and off over the last 25 years. When I worked the diet it worked for me. All too easily after losing some weight, I'd fall back into old habits only to have to start all over. Of course this netted me a higher weight nearly every time. So in July of 2016 I hit my highest weight ever of 272.5. I felt like crap, looked like crap, and wanted to crawl under a rock.

Then the health issues I never had before started rolling in... high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, elevated liver enzymes, as well as some "female" issues, and just looking and feeling so tired all the time. I was headed downhill fast and had to change something. So, from July to December 31 of 2016 I just cut back and tried to move more. I was able to lose 23.5 lbs.

On January 1, 2017 I was 249 lbs and started low carb, Atkins style, with real foods and no packaged crap. (I had looked into Keto and Paleo at that time, but never did really learn enough or even try the diets wholeheartedly.) By June 2017 I was down to 212.5. That was a 60 lb loss overall! I felt so much better... then came the plateaus. One month, turned into three of no loss, discouragement and cheating, then full on went OFF the diet... again. I had gained 20 lbs back. Somehow I managed to lose a few of those and on January 1, 2018 I was 224.8.

I resolved to get back to low carb, but it was hit and miss way too much. Gained back up to about 232 and told myself this has got to stop. Even if I couldn't find my weight-loss-mind-set I could not continue on that path. That is when I looked back into the Keto Diet. I read a bunch of stuff from various sites including Dr. Axe. (my hubby is a big fan of his and sends me information often.)

Then with all that knowledge in mind, I saw that Netflix had a documentary called "The Magic Pill" that was about the ketogenic diet. What timing! :) I watched it and I am totally convinced that my problems are all diet related and that I can change them by adapting a ketogenic lifestyle... so May 1st, that's what I officially did. This morning 5/7/18 I was at 223.8.

I'm looking forward to getting improved lab results from my next blood test, which will probably be sometime in August. Is that long enough for this way of eating to correct some numbers? Mainly Triglycerides, Cholesterol and blood pressure? My doctor told me she could put me on meds for cholesterol, or I could try fixing this with diet (she did not specify which diet). Obviously I chose diet. I already take blood pressure meds and am aware of how I need to monitor my bp as I progress on this diet to make sure it doesn't get too low.

It's great to find others who are passionate about this woe.

I have ordered 3 books so far: a cookbook, and two info books... Keto Clarity by J Moore and Keto the Complete Guide by M. Emmerich. I have two more ready to purchase after next payday :) The Obesity Code and The Art & Science of Low Carb Living. I'm a bookworm. I know there is info on the net, but I just love being able to reference books. :)

I'm very excited about this change. I feel great about doing something so good for my mind, body and soul.
