MORCYLA Hello. I also have OAS (oral allergy syndrome) . That is one of the reasons KETO works for me. As you know we can't really eat any raw fruits and veggies. So giving up fruit was easy since I didn't eat it before. KETO does not encourage fruit as it is high in carbs. Also meat and fats are the main part of my KETO way of eating. A cooked veggie here and there.
I think you will find it easy to follow. Good luck. Hope to see you on the Team KETO daily chat May 2018.

M0RCYLA,
you've probably seen that three fruits make that 6% list, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. Now they are all close to 6%. So you can either weight your portions, and calculate grams of carbs, or you can do as I do and say the closer it its to 6% the less of it I eat.

So lets say raspberries. I don't eat a big bowlful, but get maybe 20 of them. With that I make whipped cream, and when the cream is thick enough I add a squirt of Mio, like lemon flavoured Mio and mix it in. Mio is a water flavouring, and not at all natural, but ...

So lemon whipped cream, and 10 raspberries ... Each raspberry has roughly 0.2 gams of carbs, so that is 2 grams of carbs in that dessert. Might even eat a few more berries.

Thank you James! A tremendous amount of useful information that I'm sure I will keep coming back to as I continue considering.

Of the list of vegetables in your 6% post I can eat (or will eat) 11 of them. Working around that barrier is nothing new to me and thankfully seeing 11 actually makes it feel like a lot when I see it in writing. The challenge for me will be leaving fruit behind because it is how I was balancing my "5 a day" and what I have worked to reach for instead of chocolate or other sweet.

I hope that if I move to the keto mindset though that will quickly change as my ability to consistently eat fruits is just as limited as vegetables. Has the potential to be freeing!

Thank you again and thank you for sharing some personal information with me to put things into perspective. I'm another step closer.

M0RCYLA,
here is some more food for thought on Keto, though it sounds like you are going to give it a try:

Also, since you have allergies, and you know what they are have a look at this post:

You are OK with the meats, so which of those vegetables and plants are you OK with?
Alfalfa (5.1%)
Artichoke (3.4%)
Arugula (2.1%)
Asparagus (1.9%)
.
.
.
Yellow peppers (5.4%)
Zucchini (2.2%)

The percentages are the percentage of weight of the item that is carbs.

M0RCYLA,
So many questions. I'll give you my thoughts on them, perhaps appending to this post later.

First on fibre ... There are two types of fibre, soluble and insoluble. Insoluble is "roughage" like psyllium husks, no calories at all for anyone or anything. Then there is soluble fibre, this is the kind that turns more gelatinous when in water. In theory people can't extract calories from this either, though that is up for some debate. Bacteria in our gut can certainly eat this type of fibre.

Keto is definitely low on fibre. Is that a problem? Like PIPPAMOUSE I don't worry much about fibre. I don't have a bowel movement everyday. Am I ever uncomfortable physically or mentally about that? No, never. I feel great. I think its a myth that one need to have a daily bowel movement. I should add that I have ulcerative colitis (now in remission thanks to Keto) and I used to run to the toilet multiple times per day, and taking anti-inflammatories, and steroids. So for me, with none of those medications, and not running to the toilet, ... its a miracle.

Of course if you really want to up your fibre intake, perhaps ground psyllium husks added to something? No calories there, I don't think it can hurt Keto.

Welcome! I've been doing keto for about 10 months now. By no means an expert, but I feel like I do read and research a lot about keto.

I use spark nutrition tracker because you can alter the components to the ranges you want. Perhaps not the best or easiest, but since Im already on spark, it made it easier to just use it. I also ignore all the articles that pop up about "the truth about keto" (or low carb, or whatever else they discourage) because its just easier that way. I don't worry too much about fiber. My research (not a ton specific to fiber) is showing that what we "know" about fiber we don't actually know and don't think the role we were told fiber plays isn't really as strong as once believed. That being said, I'd suggest doing some research on that if it is something you are concerned with or have a doctor concerned with it. Most days I get around 5-10g depending what my carb sources are.

An important distinction between Keto and other low carb diets is that keto is pretty specific about being moderate protein. Excess protein basically acts like and your body treats like carbs. This part can actually be harder than the extremely low carb part. Since both gout and kideny stones can be related to high or excess protein, it is worth noting that protein level is probably really important for him.

There is lots to learn and lots to consider. For me it has been the best choice. Keep poking around on the team page and read lots of the posts. Best of luck!

Hello Keto friends!
My husband is the one who wants to explore Keto. Given I am the one who likes to do the research side of the things and also happen to be the grocery getter and meal maker, I find myself drawn back to SparkPeople and found all of you!

Based on what I am reading I have no doubt that Keto has it's place for many and possibly even me. I have Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) which is a reaction based on pollens to most fruits and vegetables. What I can safely eat is meat. Keto all the way right?!

So a couple of things hopefully you can share with me: how do you use SP with Keto given it's not designed for this type of eating? suggestions for keeping fiber intake up? and any other OAS out there?

Those are my questions. My husband has tried other low carb but not whole food plans (i.e. Profile, Atkins products, etc) and has suffered gout and kidney stones while following. I want to believe it's from the synthetic proteins. Any thoughts in regard to that?

My apologies for the overload of questions but hopefully I titled well...lots to consider emoticon
