Sunny,
ah, so wheat is already out.

Now you are going to be cutting out other carbs. If you saw that 6% list:

www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes
sa
geboard_thread.asp?board=0x58536x666R>79431x1xfirst

then you will see that bread has about 35% of its weight as carbs, way way above my personal 6% suggestion. Do I eat things above 6%? Sure I do, but in smaller and smaller quantity the more they are above 6%. You'll see that PIPPMOUSE's issues with carrots make sense on that list, they are 6.8%.

You might wonder why I'm such "numbers guy". I have background in Mathematics, Physics and Computing. Its just one of the tools in my toolbox. As the old quote goes:
"When you have a hammer everything looks like a nail."
... or something like that.

You are so right, James. I've been gluten-free for about three years. Chronic back ache that tormented me for over a decade is nearly gone. On the very rare occasions when I have a wheat "treat" such as a kourabie (traditional Greek Xmas cookie) I suffer the consequences so I know it's the wheat.
I am glad I've found this team, you are so helpful. emoticon Thank you!

Thank you Pippamouse
Carrots--raw and crunchy or roasted to a mellow sweetness--are in the top three of my favourite vegetables. Veggies are delish, not just filling, plus they help me to stay "regular". Delicate topic but it's my biggest problem with any low-carb plan so far.
Thanks for sharing and for your encouragement. Fat's not a problem, I live in Greece, with the world's best olive oil (Italy imports it in bulk to mix with theirs to improve it before exporting) and highest per capita consumption in the world, and I've been known to eat butter and tahini off the spoon emoticon It will be easier when I get the book.

Sunny,
my theory is that our bodies may have some underlying autoimmune issues, and for quite a few of us this are stressed by also eating wheat. Wheat is just one of many things that just can't fit into a Keto plan.

So eating Keto cuts out the wheat (and other high carb things of course), and this gives the immune system a rest and it can better handle the other problems.

Of course it could be that wheat actually causes these other problems. If you eat wheat and don't get sick right away, you don't make the connection. If slowly you develop immune problems over the years you don't make the connection. Likewise if you change your diet, things don't fix themselves in a week either. Maybe after a few months you can notice things are better, maybe.

It takes time.

James

Glad you are here with us. It was legitimately difficult to rethink veggies as something to limit. But, after just a few days of having enough fat to make me feel satisfied that part started to be a non-issue for me. There are a number of veggies that I genuinely really like, and I do miss some of them. I miss roasted carrots. I was able to have 2 carrots at my mom's house and honestly, that was all it took for me to be happy. It was just a tad higher in carbs than my usual veggies and I had room for it that day. I add fat to every veggie so I am satisfied with far less of them. With time and persistent keto it becomes easier and easier not to have things.

Hi James
thank you for your welcome and for sharing your story. It is wonderful to hear that Keto has helped you with your auto-immune problems. To be honest weight loss is my main goal and I tend to give up and try something else if weight loss stalls so your comments about the long-term and the other issues are very pertinent and I'll try to remember them if/when I get stuck. I wonder if Keto will help with my alopecia and thyroid.
Great to know that I'm on the right track with sort-of Atkins Induction until I get the book. I've found some food lists and mealplans online and I'm doing my best for now.
I'll look for the 6% list you mention.
Best wishes

Thank you Pippamouse for your welcome and for sharing your story. It is great to hear that Keto is working for you. I think for me the hardest thing will be having to limit vegetables, most diets do say they are "free" and I've relied on them to fill me up. Plus I like them!

thank you Nightskystar for such a detailed and informative reply. Yes, I'm waiting for the Keto Clarity book since it's what several here have mentioned.
"Lazy keto"? Nice term! I used to log faithfully when I was doing Weight Watchers, then one day I woke up to the fact that I was obsessing about food ("points") and sometimes bulimic. Your idea of logging just one day a week to check that I'm on track is a good one, I will try that, especially when starting out. Thanks for the heads-up about ketostix not always registering.
Congratulations on your amazing weight loss!
Thank you very much for your kind offer of mailing you and your warm welcome.

I'm stuck, too, James and i dont care. I'm out of the obese category. into merely overweight. which i can deal with just fine after being up in the morbidly obese catagory for so many years.
i can buy clothes off the regular rack at the store. i feel good. if the last 35 comes off great..if not..the 128 already off will be enough.
amazing when my weight preoccupied my life for so very long....

SUNNY112358,
welcome.

I think of Keto as a "way of eating". I eat this way because of a number of reasons.
- better blood sugar control (I'm a type-2 diabetic)
- auto-immune problems under control (I have ulcerative colitis, which in theory is chronic)
- weight loss

So I'm hooked for the long term. I might say oh this diet isn't helping me loose weight, I'm stuck. But then I have to look at the other issues. I've not taken any anti-inflammatory drugs for my ulcerative colitis in 7 years, and it was many years of those drugs before that.

So, for myself I look at this about overall health.

I find your looking at this as Atkins induction as pretty accurate, but I do think the calories (due to fat) are a little higher than Atkins induction.

If you don't want to count or track or obsess, take a look at the 6% food list in the team here somewhere. Just eat from the list and you should be good.

Welcome! I have also done low carb in the past, but it wasn't sustainable for me. It was a south beach type program. And actually had a lot higher carb than keto. I did well with some weight loss. But what I've learned now is my downfall was it was too high carb. We had 20g of carbs, but had many low carb veggies as freebies. So we could ear as much broccoli and cabbage, etc as we wanted and not count to the 20g. So that didn't do enough to curb my cravings and hunger. I lost weight but I couldn't sray with it long term. Keto, for me, reduces the cravings and keeps me from wanting most of the junk I used to crave. That's the big difference for me in keeping very low carbs and fat til I'm full. (Sorry, I'm not familiar with the specifics of Atkins plans, maybe they are the same as this?)

Keto is very low carb, some foods are just not acceptable due to triggering inflammation but thats your choice!
True keto is under 20 gm carbs per day, some count total carbs (i'm one of those) some do net. You will obviously loose better doing total carbs but again your choice.
Careful to not put too much emphasis on the pee sticks...they are famous for being wrong once you are into ketosis..due to your body "burning" ketones as it should on keto. They wont spill into your urine so wont register and you will think you arent in ketosis when you are. Thats all explained in Keto Clarity, also (which is the book I assume you are getting?)
Please ask any questions. What you talk about is commonly called "lazy keto"..which is NOT a derogatory term (I mostly do lazy keto myself and am down 80 pounds doing it) where you dont count or log anything...just be aware. I log one day a week just to be sure i'm on track..I pretty much know how many carbs are in what, and i am careful to look it up if i dont know. Most days i'm under 10 total carbs..ALL my carbs come from spinach, eggs, cheese, cream. I dont do anything else.
Hope this helps!! Please feel free to ask questions..you are welcome to spark mail me with anything you dont want to ask here. Our co-leader, James, is also a wealth of information. Glad to have you with us!

Hi Everyone
I'm coming here from a long history of on-and-off low-carb dieting, starting with the original Atkins (I have his 1971 book) through to other versions such as Zone, Protein Power, South Beach and, most recently, Dukan. I have done these for weight loss. For some auto-immune issues such as alopecia and thyroid I have tried Paleo/AIP but while I believe in this approach I don't have enough willpower to stick to it for a long time.
I don't know how different Keto is from all the above. Am I right in deducing from various internet sources that it's basically Atkins Induction (20g carbs) with extra fat? I don't see myself analysing my food intake for carb grams, fat % etc because I am afraid it will lead to obsessing about food and trigger past eating disorders, but I guess the use of keto sticks will tell me if I'm doing it right (I remember these from the early Atkins days). I've ordered the Jimmy Moore book from Amazon but until it comes I look forward to your help here.
Best wishes to everybody here in your journeys.

Pan metron ariston.
