Linda,
Other than the fat issue, think of this team as being high nutrition. One of my personal passions is getting the most nutrition per calorie consumed. So making my calories count.

So you will always find stuff here going on about minerals, or blood sugar, etc.

Stick around. Be that fly on the wall.

You are always welcome here, Linda!! So sorry your cardiologist isnt on board. I'm lucky that mine is...hes one of the most highly respected cardiologists in the country..they even fly here from Mayo clinic to learn from him. He is extremely supportive of keto, and of me.
But bottom line is, you are trusting your doc with your care, and its important you do as he tells you!!

I have backed away from KETO at cardiologist's comments since I have stents I am trying to emphasize UN-saturated fats but not fear fats in my calories and concentrating on LOW carb. But I love coming here nd reading your informative and encouraging notes. I want to not be a silent lurker, but active encourager and learner. Sometimes I think I should leave this team but I learn so much! Thank you!

We had a 36 hour weekend getaway this weekend. We ate out, stayed at a hotel, went to movies, did some shopping, it was great. Hubby and I talked about "food as fuel" shortly after lunch yesterday. And we continued to talk about it frequently. At the restaurants we did see a few things that were tempting for each of us, but we acknowledged it and talked about what a poor fuel source (Fill in the blank food) was. It really helped to think of our meals in those terms. Wings and blue cheese was a better fuel source than deep fried and breaded food. Steak was a better fuel for me than ice cream. I've gotten over the physical desires for sugar and sweet (i think) but now need to retrain my brain.

its hard for me as its what i do for a living. I have to think of my decorated cakes, cookies, breads, pies, etc as only a business. When i worked for a bank, even though i would have loved to have all that money, would i even consider stealing any? NO. so thats how i think of my product..if i eat it, i lose profit. Its a business, nothing more.

To add to the "food as fuel" idea.

The opposite is "food as entertainment". Do not think of food as entertainment. Yes one can make artistic, or otherwise fantastic dishes. That elevates calories to entertainment, and we all know where that can go.

Once the carb addiction is over, if you are about to eat something ask yourself a simple question: "Am I hungry?"

San Antonio sounds like a great get away. I have found that eating out/away is so much easier on Keto than Whole30. Most every place that you go has a protein and can do low carb veggies (leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green beans, etc...) and you can add fat to that (avocado, butter, low sugar dressing such as ranch or blue cheese). If you eat at chains, check out nutrition info ahead of time, don't be afraid to ask about ingredients (this one is something I need to work on!) and order exactly what you want.

I also LOVE the advice Holly passed along about thinking of food as fuel. I think I hit that place where I am less hungry most days. Today I struggled to eat much because "nothing sounded good." It was harder to make something, but I chose something easy and ate it. It was simply fuel I knew my body needed.

I track on My Fitness Pal...and my diary is open as its required by my coach, if anyone wants to see what i eat in a day.
as for my coaching and experiment. As i said hes got me at 2000 cals a day...most of that fat. 60 gm or under in protein, less that 20 total carbs. I'm now down 8 or 9 pounds in the last 7 days...a pound away from my low. amazing to me that i can eat this much and lose.
and some words from wisdom from him when i asked if i could make a "treat".
"Food is now fuel, not social. not pleasure. FUEL. Start thinking of it that way and you wont need or want a "treat". Try to find ways to train your brain to think of it as only fuel."
and frankly, it works. All food pleasure left me the day i started this, anyhow. Again, one of his tips is, if you keep finding replacements for desserts, etc, you really arent over the addiction. I hate that i agree with him...lol

Thanks Pippa! That strategy sounds like very sound advice. I am going to San Antonio for a conference with my husband on day 28 of Whole 30. I'm thinking I might have some challenges there, so I might have to finish up at a "Whole 28". But I've just received a copy of Keto Clarity, so I'll be ready to move in to keto upon our return. I'm really excited about the prospects. I've had a great response with the W30, and looking forward to even greater health with keto.
Thanks again!

Hi Pam. Welcome!

I've done 2 rounds of Whole30 and can tell you, as good as I felt on it, I feel so much better eating Keto. Probably because if the increased amount of fat.

In my opinion, if you start Keto right after your Whole30, you are likely to find a pretty easy transition. If you intend to do so, if it were me, I wouldn't even do the "challenge" of different foods at the end. I would do a day of dairy and see how your body responds to it. If that goes well, I'd just jump straight into Keto. The biggest adjustment for me was not eating endless veggies to feel full. Sometimes I want more veggies, but its more the habit of eating more food rather than being hungry. I eat enough fat to make me feel full and then don't want the extra veggies.

Holly gave you some great resources. I am a big fan of research and reading up. I have also been a big fan of tracking my food, calories and the fat/carb/protein numbers. It helps me know how many cal I eat. I wanted to do it for the first month until I got the hang of it. I am continuing to do so because I still struggle to know I'm eating enough fat compared to protein.

Feel free to ask any questions you have!

Hi and WELCOME!! I am not familiar with Whole 30 but i can help you with the keto stuff!!
Great book...Keto Clarity.

sites with food lists..
The best is www.ketovangelist.com they will send you a complete food list on approved keto foods. its strict but truly keto. Lots of great information here...and if you want to really do it correctly its the place to go. They have a page on facebook called "Ketogenic Success" you want the one with over 100k members.

this is another good site /www.ruled.me I like what they have to say, too.

and another www.completelyketo.com/

Harlan has lots of recipes..many are desserts. Its suggested you stay away from desserts until you are on maintenance..i didnt and i stalled badly. but to me it was worth it, and i still make them here and there for special treats or holidays.

If you really get stuck you can hire a coach through Ketovangelist. I splurged and did just that last week..I have him for a month unlimited questions. Hes fantastic and i've already broken the stall so i'm happy. well worth the money!!

Ask questions. Stay keto..there are some who feel if it fits your macros its ok to eat...(IFFYM is the abbreviation) whatever works for you, but know it is NOT true keto to do that. Stick with it and you WILL get results. Dont compare yourself to anyone else..some people lose huge amounts so quickly..dont expect that. Be happy with small steady losses, and let your body repair with food. some of us (i'm one of this some) are so damaged from eating so badly for all these years, yoyo dieting, etc, that we take longer than others.

Lastly...remember this. This isnt a "diet". Its a way of eating. Most stay on it for life..and its safe and healthy to do that. Read, read, read. Educate yourself. When i started i was angry and SURE it wouldnt work..but i was desparate. I actually PLANNED to go off for Thanksgiving, which was 3 weeks into my start. I wanted fruit. i wanted sweet stuff. i wanted potatos. i wanted pie and stuffing. But guess what? after 2 weeks, and a really HUGE loss for me, and feeling so much better, I didnt WANT to cheat. I found subs and had a GREAT Thanksgiving dinner that was totally, completely keto. and i lost that week, too..
You should know I own a bakery. I was the carb queen. Yes, I'm a professional chef. If i can do this, trust me, ANYONE can.

A PS. Some tell you fruit is ok...we had a HUGE discussion on the keto page about this yesterday. Your body does not know the difference between table sugar and fruit. Seriously. Its processed the exact same way. Some can get away with it. most cant...and why would you want to if you know its doing sugar damage to you? The ONLY keto approved fruit, and in small, tiny amounts (as in 4 raspberries) are Strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries. And even then they tell you to wait until you are totally into ketosis..which can take up to a month if you are diligent and totally keto, to get into. Berries stall me. And i cant have just a couple. To me thats the one thing i miss more than anything, is fruit. How do i deal? i get extracts. I put the cherry or berry or banana extract into my morning fat shake. and it helps..at least i get the taste i'm missing..and it doesnt make me crave it.
anyhow..hope this wasnt too long. If i can be of any help message me!!! Glad to have you on board!!

Hi yall. I am currently on Whole 30. I am beginning my 3rd week and am interested in finding what I might transition to when this comes to an end. I've enjoyed the non-scale results so far and am leaning toward a keto lifestyle.
The posts here are very informative so thanks!

Does anyone have a suggestion on a good book regarding keto? There are so many to choose from, so I thought yall could steer me in the right direction and help narrow down my choices.

I'd love to read about the science end, but also i am looking for how to's on getting started including meal plans and food lists.

again, THANKS so much!
Pam
