Welcome.

I'm a type-2 diabetic myself, so if I decide to go non-Keto my blood sugar goes up, and then I need medication, and I dislike drugs unless absolutely necessary.

I am new to Spark people but not to Keto. I have gone on and off keto for about a year now. I have decided to make the commitment to stay on keto for life. I feel so much better when I am on it. That is why I keep coming back. Those carbs do call me. I also intermittent fast. I am 60 yrs old.

let me tell you..i was the carb queen. owning a bakery i about lived on buttercream..and pies..and bread, cookies and cake. and pasta at least 2 nights a week, many nights 3 and four times.
i was ANGRY when i started. i wanted it to fail so i could eat what i liked. at least i'd tried, RIGHT?? and i must tell you, whenever i started ANY plan, i did it full on. zero cheats. not a morsel..and i would lose the first week or two then stop..and after a month of no loss i'd say well, see, it didnt work, and i'd go right back to my old ways.
Then my son and daughter in law tell me about keto..and i'm aghast. i was a nurse..and thats BAD for you!! Mom..please..just do some research. and the more i read, the more it made sense. but i was still mad..especially about no buttercream or potatos or my beloved spaghetti... and one day i woke up said ok i'm going to try.it was oct 29th i had a bowlful of halloween candy and dont get trick or treaters, dammit!! but i started anyhow. and told myself i was going off for thanksgiving, for a month. no way was i not gonna have stuffing potatos yams and pecan pie!!
only it worked. by thanksgiving i was down almost 30 pounds..and found replacements for everything but the potatos and pie. but i was fine. i did take time off at Christmas..i planned a week took 3 days..and i wasnt even too bad...but nothing tasted as good as i remembered. and the only other time i've had a morsel that wasnt keto approved was a once in a lifetime trip to disney...and it had a full deluxe meal plan with it..and i ate what i wanted..gained 4 pounds and it was gone in 3 days.
so if this former carb queen can do it, i know ANYONE can. if you need subs let me know. i have a great keto cream cheese cupcake recipe. and a chocolate cupcake one, too..i'd suggest you wait a few weeks to try desserts while you are getting carbs out of your system so you dont crave more..but these will be a good sub when you are ready. at thanksgiving i figured out keto cranberries. i can make rhubarb taste like my beloved and missed fruit. i havent bothered trying keto bread because i just dont care about it, but i made a cheesecake one day, i have quiche a couple times a month, and i have a taco bake that is out of this world good!! so when you are ready...ask!!
and know we are here to support you!!

Hi Holly,

Thanks for the welcome and hints. The pork rind snack sounds wonderful. Iím going shopping after work and pork rinds will definitely be in the shopping cart, as well as lots of butter & bacon.
.
Iíve been on one diet after another for the past 18 years. Iíve always carried a few pounds extra but in 1999 I quit smoking and really started gaining weight. Iíve lost and gained the same pounds over and over again. The last diet I tried was the Whole30. I lasted 2 weeks, not the 30 days. It was just too restrictive and I felt deprived all the time. Keto seems more doable. I will miss Fritos and Tater Tots, but not much else.

Hi Jocy and WELCOME!!
a couple hints. first off, i had NO trouble till week 3. then i just got grouchy and a little "off" and some powerade zero fixed both. others do it a few days in..some have NO problem.
I will tell you the first week, for me, was the hardest. I cleaned nothing out. i didnt plan to start. one day i woke up and said ok i'm doing this today. seriously!! I own a bakery so i'm never going to be away from carbs...i just made a conscious choice to do keto. and have had zero trouble even in the middle of huge bakery days (this morning i made a wedding cake for 200 people and 15 gallons of cookie dough...didnt bat an eye at it or want to try any of it)

I have been on every diet known to man and nothing..NOTHING worked till keto. i have no hunger and no cravings. i "want" fruit here and there..but just ignore that want and it passes.
keep lots of keto food around. i have beef sticks, summer sausage and pepperoni in my fridge. hard boiled eggs. cheese. I make up a bag of pork rinds drizzled with melted butter then shaken with some swerve sweetener and cinnamon. I package it in airtight ziplocks and its ready at a moments notice if i feel the need. (they are fine plain..i just dont care for them but i love them with the cinnamon and swerve...and they are crunchy and that satisfies my crunch desire)
be very careful with nuts...they are pretty high in carbs so you have to have just a few..and for me thats hard. Peanuts and no additive peanut butter are not truly keto (they are legumes so have an inflammatory effect) but many of us have some..me included...i make my own peanut butter and have a teaspoon here and there. Better choices are walnuts, pecans and macademia nuts..and sometimes almonds but almonds are quite high in carbs. you can make nut butters from them, also, in a food processor.
drink lots of water, and be sure to have some salt..it will help in the first week and help keep your electrolytes balanced.
you can do this!!! just remember its a lifestyle not a short term diet. Butter and bacon are your friends....how wonderful is that!!! Keep us posted and dont hesitate to ask questions!!

Hello All,

My name is Jocy. I'm 61 years old and 35 pounds overweight. I have Metabolic Syndrome and I'm determined to lose this weight and improve my cholesterol levels before I develop more serious health problems.

I haven't started Keto yet but am cleaning out the kitchen, stocking up on leafy greens, and planning on starting on Thursday. I read that the worse transition days are days 2 and 3 so that would put me into the weekend when they start.

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

I was going to suggest asking. Our local grocery is willing to order things and give them a shot, or special order of customers if it is the whole case. Applegate meats are pretty awesome. I find they don't have the same fillers and other additives (not a big deal for everyone, but we had food allergies and other diet restrictions) that we found in most other brands we had access too. They also don't have sugar in most, or only trace amounts so they fit into Whole30 (basically its really restrictive paleo with zero sweeteners of any kind, and a eliminates a lot of other components of processed food, no dairy, grains, legumes, etc.

My local Target carries them, as does our local co-op. We tried them when we started our first Whole30, and the kids (4 and 2.5) love them. They dont seem to miss the sugar. We like them grilled or microwaved and served with sauerkraut and mustard. And now I will likely add some cheese to that mix.

Hi!

Im newish to the Keto diet. I did a low carb diet around 2003 which was amazing for me. So here i am, after several other types of eating, trying keto to see if that helps me back to where I was then. (That was my lowest and healthiest weight of my adult life). My hubby and I have done paleo before and have done two rounds of whole 30. I think what had been missing is this purposeful high fat. I do miss eating "piles of veggies" sometimes, but I am learning to like leafy greens more.

And since I saw we were discussing hot dogs further down thread, I'm going to throw my support behind Applegate Hot Dogs. They have 0 carbs. A bit more spendy than others, but fit with other ingredients we look out for.

Welcome Saleese.

Like NIGHTSKYSTAR I too tend to buy the same things, but anything new that I might buy I scrutinize.

My personal guideline, which I mostly follow is to read labels, get the amount of net carbs (not counting fibre) and the serving size, do s little division and the amount is 6% or less of the weight as carbs, then I buy and eat it. More than that and I get very careful.

But I agree, lots of goods have sugar added to them, and there are do many types and names for essentially sugar.

to add...i'm reminded of a day I was teaching a canning class (yes i am a professional chef, teach many foods classes and actually really do know quite a bit about foods and nutrition) and I picked up a can of fruit fresh, a substance that will prevent browning in fruits.
One woman grabbed the can and was aghast. TH
IS SAYS ASCORBIC ACID!!!!! she said with total horror. YOU ARE PUTTING ACID IN YOUR FOOD!!!
I smiled and said yes, Ma'am. what do you use on yours? Why, she says..orange juice!!! Yes, i said..do you know why orange juice keeps the fruit from browning? YES she proudly says...it's the vitamin C, which is HEALTHY!!! I said exactly..well done!!! Now. do you know the other name for ascorbic acid? NO and I don't need to!! she says.
OK I said...but..for the others that may question my use of it? Its vitamin C....

the only thing on that list that is even questionable is the tiny amount of corn protein. Its far down on the list, and, like bacon and other foods that are ALSO approved and widely used in a keto diet, you may find some minute amounts in some foods (bacon lists sugar because its cured with sugar..but there isnt any IN it..its in the smoke..and yes i am very familiar with the smoking process..) and I dont hesitate to eat bacon.
I think we are all adults, and able to make choices without being laughed at and ridiculed and judged. If something is glaring, we may call it to attention, KINDLY, so new people know it perhaps isnt the best choice, but, in the end, it is up to each of us to make our own decisions. This team is for support and to help others, and, frankly, i'm sure going to take expert's and doctors advice when making my choices. .
for others following this thread...please know you are safe from judgement from most of us here. if we break down the list printed below for Nathans beef hot dogs, you see salt, many sodiums (salts). sorbitol, which is a sugar alchohol, paprika is a spice, and the corn protein, which is the ONLY thing on the list that is questionable, a minute amount, and most likely used in the curing process. Nathans beef weiners ARE keto approved, and if you question it please read the book Keto Clarity, where they are named as one of the brands to buy, DUE to their compliance with the keto way of eating. ]
Peanuts, unfortunately, are NOT keto approved, (they are legumes not nuts) although many do use peanuts or peanut butter. I, occasionally, have a spoonful of my homemade peanut butter, made using nothing but peanuts i grind in a food processor. More acceptable is Almond Butter, but again you need to be aware that most nut butters have sugar in them, and a LOT of it. So, seeing as peanut butter is NOT and approved food, where some hot dogs are, the comparison is like apples and oranges (lol neither of which are keto approved--so i should say..avocados and oranges!!!)

hot dogs are absolutely keto. In fact, in one of the most popular books, "Keto Clarity", written by both an expert and doctors, they speak of hot dogs, naming Nathans brand and Hebrew National, as 2 of the best.
We try very hard in this team not to be judgemental. I think if you go on most keto forums online you will find hot dogs are not only good and suitable but suggested by most people. I just went and looked at a Nathans package, and the main ingredient is beef. They are 1 carb per wiener.
I make hash when i get tired of my smoked meat that I make myself at least twice a month. It is chopped smoked meat and bacon and butter. You might also call that processed? But totally keto and totally acceptable.
Not sure what on a wiener you are objecting to.

BRENDAM714,
excellent. I think everyone needs to find their own Keto path. Basically find things that they like that fit into eating Keto. I think you'll find that over time you will find yourself eating "strange" things at strange times.

Like breakfast. In a carb filled world that is going to be cereal in a bowl with milk, maybe toast with jam, maybe waffles. All of those things are not Keto friendly. What is left seems to be just bacon and eggs. So what to do, same boring breakfast forever. Well I make omelettes for breakfast sometimes, so some bell peppers cut up and thrown in, maybe cheese, etc. But then sometimes I just eat "stuff" for breakfast. Today was a big wiener in the microwave, and some cheddar cheese. Yup, that was breakfast.

Understand, Tracy. Mine now stops for candy, doughnuts, buttered rolls, etc. on his daily commute to/from work since I threw out his high carb snacks. At least he stopped bringing them home to me when I asked him if he was deliberately trying to sabotage me.

So far have managed to keep my % close to keto as I learn how my body responds. Carbs have not been a big draw in the past so eliminating breads and potatoes was easy.

Looking forward to contributing to the group in the future when I am more in tune with keto

Brenda, welcome to you both.

You're cleansing of the kitchen is indeed a good step. What do you do with those things? Throw them out, or give them to friends, neighbour's, or relatives? Your choice.

My wife and I both eat Keto, so this makes it easier. But sometimes we have guests. In that case we provide one carb heavy separate dish, like mashed potatoes. Just one such dish.

A key thing is not to make mixed dishes, that add carbs to an otherwise Keto friendly item, like breaded chicken pieces. Spiced, or salted, or buttered, but not breaded.

Hi, just starting to learn about Keto. Basically overweight, pre-diabetic and looking to get to healthier. Also will be putting DH on same as research shows that Keto diet may help Parkinson's Disease symptoms. Doing some reading and in process of re-doing my kitchen stores to eliminate most non compliant foods. DH will be a problem with totally eliminating as he is at a good weight and loves his carb heavy foods. Will be looking for guidance to get into this way of eating.

Quick update...
Same me..just using an old account is all.

I was able to find and log into my old SP account so I went ahead and set it up again.
All of my manually entered low-carb foods and fave recipes from 2 years ago are still on this old account as well as in my nutrition planner which is awesome as I won't have to upload all of these again. I had been dreading doing all of this again with the new account I had signed up for last week.

Thanks again for the welcome and support :)

KETO1DERLAND,
well, you may be back at square one in one sense, but you have a plan, you know what works for you, and frankly that is way ahead of many.

Many people feel they are just doomed to be heavy, that is the hormones that nature has dealt them. If they think that eating Keto (or low carb) can help, that is just theoretical, for others maybe.

In your case you know it works for you. That ups the motivation a whole lot.

Also, as you've just noted, eating real food tastes a whole lot better. Frankly if it didn't I would have had a difficult time sticking with Keto. Plus my taste preferences changed over time, so a whole lot of new things got added to my list of "I like that".

I tried low-carb for the first time about 2 years ago and I immediately noticed how much better I felt using this nutritional approach versus low-fat or other more traditional nutritional plans.
I stuck to my goals, both my nutritional and physical activity goals for about 6-8 months and lost around 50 lbs and a whole lot of inches..
Sadly, after all of my hard work I went back to my old lifestyle of eating junk, loading up on carbs and became sedentary once again. The pounds started creeping back on along with the inches I had lost..

So...here I am, back to square 1 again with no one to blame but myself.
I can use all of the support I can get....I re-joined Spark People and I'm ready to take back control.

Today is day 4 and so far so good!
I fully intend on re-starting my strength training routine here in the next few days.
I focus more on my muscles and strengthening those using weights (dumbbells, kettlebells, weighted barbells etc) rather than cardio/aerobic exercise.

I had forgotten what REAL food tastes like until a few days ago when I made my own homemade coleslaw using only mayo, apple cider vinegar, shredded cabbage, salt & pepper...it was DELICIOUS.
