Hi Elaine and WELCOME!!
I jumped in with both feet and directly did the under 20 carbs/day thats suggested. i rarely go over 10. and theres zero deprivation..
yesterday, i had grilled summer sausage with munster cheese melted on top for lunch, and a hard boiled egg. Lasagna for dinner, with the noodles being zucchini..and frankly its GOOD...and i had a LOT...will have the other half tonite. and for dessert? i had a chocolate coconut flour cupcake with...drumroll..my pasion..buttercream!!! and the whole day was under 10 carbs!!!
i dont eat breakfast..my choice as i do the intermittant fasting, plus i'm just not hungry in the morning.
UMMAPEARL...suggestion that worked for me from my keto mentors. FIRST week or two..EAT. all you want of keto approved food. i had 3 scrambled eggs in butter, with cheddar cheese and bacon every morning my first couple weeks. lunch was cheese and summer sausage or meat or pepperoni...and lots of it. supper was fatty meat cooked in butter and a spinach salad with oil and vinegar. and i ate till i was full..and if i got hungry in between i had pepperoni or a couple cheese cubes or a simms meat stick from Aldi. Just be sure to check carbs..some bacon has sugar (maple, or sugar cured)
you can do this..it seems impossible at first but when you get going, you arent hungry or craving anything, it will all fall into place...

Hello! I'm an enthusiastic but confused newbie. A couple of days ago, the doctor asked me to do keto to deal with pre-diabetes that is on the cusp of being diabetes. How did this happen? I thought, at least, that I was eating so well: no sugar, etc. Well, now I am going to learn a whole new definition of healthy eating!
Any quick and easy menu suggestions? I can't seem to get out of the kitchen.

Elaine, (TIAONYX1),

It sounds like you've dipped into low carb or Keto before.

Once you are fat adapted, using ketostix will frustrate you as they don't reflect the ketones you are burning. Urine ketones are high when you aren't burning them so they spill into urine. you won't want to use many ketostix after the first 2 months...

Here's a great article about urine ketosis vs being fat adapted:

Thank you for warm welcomes,

The brisket was an off day thing, because I work on St Patrick's Day and I'll be too pooped to do much when I get done.

I have the Ketostix on order thru Amazon and they are due in this coming Monday. I set them up on a bi-monthy reorder for now.

My guess would be that yes, you probably had a bit of carb from the potatoes depending on how long they were cooked, but don't worry about that. I am assuming this isn't a daily thing for you.

You're doing great... 9 pounds in awesome. Are you checking with a ketostix? That may tell you if something you ate brought you out of ketosis.

I have lost weight 9 lbs so far.

I have a question though?, I am not as thirsty when I wake up in the morning's now. I think my drinking of water has gone dowon. I am actively trying to keep that up.

But, my question is - I bought a slab of brisket and cabbage and got lazy and let my roommate cook it in the crockpot, I think she put potatoes in for her and I didn't eat any but would those potatoes put "starch" into the pot from the cook. I went to eat what I thought was leftovers only to discover they were potatoes. (didn't knowingly eat them, but did I get sabotaged? )

I have heard of the Keto Clarity book and will definitely get it. Just haven't as of yet.

Kay

Welcome! If you are looking for great info, I really enjoyed the material on DietDoctor.com. It's free for a month, gives you access to a TON of videos and movies from experts on low carb/high fat living, has meal plans and advice... It's a really great resource I wish I'd found the first few times I'd tried this (so I wouldn't have fallen into the trap of "if its not working quickly, then I am doing something wrong or it doesn't work for me"). There's so much myth out there about Keto, so it's nice to go to reputable doctors who are experts in this lifestyle :-) I also really liked Keto Clarity - it's a book with a lot of the science behind keto to help dispel the myths also :-)

Good luck in your journey!

Hi Kay... have you lost any weight? If not, don't worry... just the fact of your decreased appetite is a great sign that you are going in the right direction. If you haven't already... I would recommend that you start tracking your food so that you can start tweaking it.... the most important being to make sure the carbs are close, if not less than 30. Good luck.

Hi all,

I'm at a little bit of a dilemma, I am relatively new to Keto, (read it as always striving to learn more) and I have already bought several books relating to this lifestyle of eating. But, I don't feel anything like I'm completely confident either as in your subject under the "Brand New to Keto" area. So, I thought I would post here instead.

I have been involved with Spark People off and on for many years, but have never felt confident enough in regular dieting to stick with it. What got me interested in this eating lifestyle was a book called Live It NOT Diet.

I'm a 58 year old woman, 5' 7" and weighted 257 lbs when I started on the Keto diet 3 weeks ago. I have been eating mainly meat, cheese, eggs and salads. I have noticed a dramatic drop in my appetite, and find myself not hungry most of the time. I'm looking forward to becoming active on this forum and staying that way !!

We will be here when you are ready. Of course, I am wanting to quote some heavy jedi accolade, but I will refrain. Sorry... I am assuming you are a fellow Star Wars fan considering your signature.
