Hi team my name is Sharon and this is my 3rd time in the Challenge. The first time was with the emoticon then I ran onto this friendly and moviated team last round. I enjoy being a emoticon

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
To feel better and not be out of breath climbing up and down stairs, Go on hikes with my son and be able to keep up with him and enjoy doing things with him.

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
To lose 5% of my weight and eating more healthier

3) What diet are you following?
Sparkpeople and Weight Watchers. I used to be a Weight Watcher leader but was let go when I became prenangant with my son. They didn't want a preg. leader trying to tell clients how to lose weight.

4) What is your favorite exercise?
I love walking and running out in the open breeze when it is nice out. Or working out in the gym.

5) Two random fun facts about you?
I love playing with our three kitties and all animals in general.

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
Yes I would like a Spark buddy if one is available.

Hi, my name is Tina and this is my 3rd challenge and 1st as a Starfish. I live in Western South Dakota.
1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
My motivation is the desire to be around for my kids and to enjoy life with them not on the sidelines. Also, to feel better about my weight by getting it back down into a normal range.

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
My goal is to lose the 5% this time. I didn't succeed the last two challenges. Third times the charm! Another goal is to be consistent in doing exercise outside of work.

3) What diet are you following?
I use the SP tracker to stay within my ranges and work on controlling portion sizes.

4) What is your favorite exercise?
I love Zumba. I also like walking and playing fitness games on the Wii and Xbox.

5) Two random fun facts about you?
Two random facts: I got married on a Friday the 13th and I am left-handed.

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
Sure.

7) Anything else you would like to share?

Hi all - I'm Suzann and this is my 3rd challenge as a Starfish!


1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
I have always been interested in health and fitness - bit of a hobby (some in my family say obsession), but I have done every diet, own about 100 fitness DVDs, over 30 health books - guess what - no magic pill in any of them...

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
To TRULY lose the 5% and head into swimsuit season with a bit more confidence

3) What diet are you following?
I follow a combo of Mediterranean, Weight Watchers, and BeachBoday (with a few good ideas from several other sources)

4) What is your favorite exercise?
Walking and Kickboxing - + weight lifting

5) Two random fun facts about you?
Besides my very full day job - I have two side-"jobs" that help me balance my life's pleasures
Wine Tastiings (yes - like tupperware parties but with wine - fun!)
BeachBody coach (I love helping others find their fitness passion - hooked on Chalene Johnson's programs)

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
everyone's a buddy!

7) Anything else you would like to share?
I'm also taking online classes to learn how to do social media, photoshop and website code - challenging but fun

Hi I am a new Starfish emoticon I am ready to take on the challenge.

I am working on becoming healthier and lighter. I do my best to stick to my plan and work at making sure I exercise and eat as healthily as I can.

I live in Milton Keynes England with my Husband and our pet cat Dylan.

What I want to get out of this Challenge: To keep my exercise going and keep to smaller portions

Diet I am following: None really I am simply using smaller portions adding more fruit and vegetables and lessening fat and sugar.

Exercise Chair exercise and walking

Random facts about me: I am determined and a glass half full person. I am determined and will not allow things to stop me doing stuff. I have osteo arthritis and coping with a right broken humerus that is not healing. I love cats, dogs, wolves and animals in general. I can see the beauty even in the Aye-aye that most people say is ugly.

Spark Buddy I think of all of you as spark buddies

Anything else DH is supporting me and helping me all he can with life in general really,he has heart problems and mobility problems so we help each other. He too is trying to eat healthy so that helps a lot.
I am trying to use more vegetables in our meals DH calls it rabbit food but is getting used to it.
My brother is getting married in August and I refuse to be Mrs Tubby in the pictures. I want to be in a dress that fits rather than one that hides me and not trying to hide myself behind someone.

Hey there Starfish!!
Back for my second challenge...please don't hate me, I am on Maintenance...but I know stuff, so please feel free to pick my brain if you need any ideas, motivation, inspiration!!! Most likely I will tell you to make sure your numbers are correct and to track your nutrition like a fiend! LoL

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle? My kids - overweight mommy cannot run and play without getting out of breath...and that was not what I wanted to show my kids as they grew up. My oldest remembers me heavy...my youngest does not.

2) What is your goal for this challenge? rack up exercise minutes each day to get us to our destination FIRST - yup, going into this like a competition - watch out!!!

3) What diet are you following? I used the Spark Diet as a guideline for my lifestyle change....that was 4 years ago. Consistency is key everyday for longterm success.

4) What is your favorite exercise? Walking!!!!

5) Two random fun facts about you? I come off pretty conservative, but really have a great sense of humor (sarcasm is my bed fellow) and I even have a tattoo from 20 years ago (before it became a fad!) and that shocks people when they see it.

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy? Everyone on here is a Sparkbuddy.....hello...(LoL)

7) Anything else you would like to share? Hmmm...well, my hubby started to lose 2 years after I did and he did it all through dietary/habit changes. He got down to a very skinny 138 just by nutrition alone - but he looked sick, even though he was eating well and healthy (omg - people were concerned for him & I heard it)...I taught/coached/told him to eat more protein (because at some point if you don't eat enough, your body wiill "eat" itself) and he gained 20 pounds of muscle because he started really working out to build muscle - ST every other day and cardio everyday. He is now on maintenance (at 155-160) with me and for a 41 year old man, he is in better health and physical shape that any time in his life. Would I like credit for this?? Yes, I would, but it was really all his doing...he just followed my lead and took my advice when he was ready to listen to it.

Hello fellow starfish! My name is Ella and I live in Oklahoma, just east of Oklahoma City.

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle? I have eight grandchildren and want to be around a long time to enjoy them and watch them grow into the wonderful people I know they will become.

2) What is your goal for this challenge? To lose at least the 5% and keep it off this time!

3) What diet are you following? Sparkpeople

4) What is your favorite exercise? I belong to Curves and try to go there at least three times a week. I enjoy walking and my hubby & I hope to be able to pick some bicycles and start to ride.

5) Two random fun facts about you? I play the bagpipes and own four West Highland White Terrier dogs!

Hi I am Judy,

I live in Toronto, Canada, This is my 11th challenge ( I think) and I think I have been a starfish for 4 or 5 times. I am married to a wonderful husband and we have been married 20 years. I have 2 children my son 18, and my daughter is 16.


During the summer challenge I lost 3 lbs., not much but still I have kept it off.
In the winter challenge I lost 6.05 % which was wonderful.
But ... I still need and want to continue to lose more. I like the challenges and have made a few spark friends along the way. I will try very hard to lose the 5%.

) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
I have osteo arthritis in my knees and any weight loss will help.
2) What is your goal for this challenge? 5 %
3) What diet are you following? Watching my portions and eating more fruit. Staying away from any snacks.
4) What is your favorite exercise? Cycling every day 30 minutes which is 10-12 km (if possible), swim aerobics each week , and walking as much as I can.
5) Two random fun facts about you? I am Canadian and have a lot of relatives in the U.S. In Asheville, North Carolina, Washington D.C. & Boulder Colorado. I like music.
6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy? Sure, although I often don't have time, so may not always get back to them quickly.
7) Anything else you would like to share? I love music, my husband plays French horn in two orchestra’s and my daughter is in a very good choir which has earned a place in Podium a huge festival held in Ottawa, Canada May 2012.

Hello fellow Starfish. My name is Bridget and I am a 48 yo wife and mother. 3 of my kids are grown, 2 live with me and my 3rd lives with me when he's home from college. I also have 2 little ones adopted from China that it's been my blessing to parent! :-)

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle? I lost 40 lbs on SP in '09 but put it back on so now I need to focus on being healthy and active.
2) What is your goal for this challenge? To lose 5%, 9-10 lbs.

4) What is your favorite exercise? I love cardio! Zumba and spinning are my favs right now.

Hello everyone!
I am Milena. This is the second 5% Chalenge I have done and I have a great feeling about it. Maybe because it`s Spring I feel like I can fly these days.

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
I had HPV and I got up to CIN 2 in a few months. This hit me big time! I realized I had to change something. Today after 2 years as a vegetarian and 1 year of regular yoga and regular running I have a feeling that finally I am on the right way...
2) What is your goal for this challenge?
To stay motivated on exercise, and to lose finally those 5%. Most of all I love the connections you get from the challenge, all the love and positive energy shared here.
3) What diet are you following?
Vegetarian, sometimes the diet from spark people. For this challenge I will aim for the spark people 1800 calorie diet.
4) What is your favorite exercise?
Walking, elliptical training, running and yoga. Those are all the exercises I do and I love them all.
5) Two random fun facts about you?
I spend at least 10 minutes a day looking at my gorgeous engagement ring :)
I love to swim and have spend the entire winter dreaming of the sea...

Hi everyone! I'm Marcia even though I use my nickname Kaytie as my Spark User Name. This will be my second 5% Challenge with the Starfish. My first was the Winter Challenge and it was a great experience so I signed up again.

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
Some of my bloodwork showed higher levels on some tests and I've been taking medication for it. I hope to get those tests back down to normal levels without the meds. I also wanted to look better and feel better too.

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
I am aiming for at least 5% weight loss which I did not reach the last time around.

3) What diet are you following?
After many years as a Weight Watcher which I will always feel is a great program, I decided to follow my own program which is mainly low fat, lower carbs and healthy eating.

4) What is your favorite exercise?
Walking is my favorite exercise either outside or on the treadmill.

5) Two random fun facts about you?
I like to travel and especially spending time on SparkPeople

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
I look forward to interacting with all the special Starfish members that are on this team.

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
I joined Sparkpeople about two years ago around Lent...I decided to adopt a healthier lifestyle rather than give something up for Lent.
2) What is your goal for this challenge?
I would love to lose 5% of my body weight...I have been doing a challenge since fall and have managed not to GAIN anything !
3) What diet are you following?
I track food and exercise and follow The Gabriel Method...emphasis on adding essential nutrients rather than restricting anything, combined with morning and evening meditations and visualization.
4) What is your favorite exercise?
Swimming
5) Two random fun facts about you?
I love the beach and the desert, but live in Pittsburgh, PA, pretty far away from both, and I want to raise alpacas, or at least goats and 2 alpacas within the next 5 years.Not in Pittsburgh, I might add.

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
My weight went up a lot during grad school, and I'm really vain, so I joined Spark to try to get the weight off. Unfortunately, just joining Spark doesn't actually make you lose weight, so the weight continued to creep on.

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
5% of my weight...FINALLY. I've done so many of these challenges and haven't done it. I usually hover right at my starting weight.

3) What diet are you following?
I'm just focusing on eating all the vegetables I buy. I'm trying to keep them from going bad.

4) What is your favorite exercise?
I don't know. I'm a little ambivalent about exercise right now.

5) Two random fun facts about you?
I'm fluent in German. I adopted a blind, deaf, geriatric dog about two years ago.

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
Not a Spark buddy in the Spark buddy sense, but I love having SparkFriends!

Hello everyone, I'm new to the challenge and really excited. My name is Andree. I am 26 years old. I live in Northern Ontario.

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
A friend who asked me to be a workout buddy kickstarted it, along with reaching my all-time highest weight this summer of 243 lbs.

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
I would love to actually lose 5%, but as long as the number on the scale goes down, I'm happy. The challenge coincides with me starting a new job, so I hope it will help motivate me to make healthy choices and stay active during this transition.

3) What diet are you following?
Generally clean eating plus the sparktracker

4) What is your favorite exercise?
Don't really have a favourite. I enjoy strength training and I'm growing to like running.

Hello everyone. My name is Barbara and I live in East Tennessee. I am 48 years old and have two children..a son (17) and a daughter (12) and a wonderful husband. This is my very first 5% challenge and looking forward to spending it with you StarFish!

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
My health, my children, my husband. I have been struggling with being overweight for years now...have slowly realized it is time to make a change!

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
Just to lose weight! I would love to lose 5% of my fat, but at this point I will take any loss! I think I could take the award for the SLOWEST loser! LOL

3) What diet are you following?
Basically the SparkPeople diet...tracking my calories. But really need to work on what I eat also, like try to weed out the processed foods...although very hard, as I am a person of convenience.

4) What is your favorite exercise?
Riding my Recumbent bike. I have bad knees (arthritis), so this works really well for me.

5) Two random fun facts about you?
I love to draw house plans, in fact I own my own business as a residential designer along with working a full time job as a drafter.
I get really silly when I am overtired or sleepy...which my children love to see! LOL

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
I would love a Spark Buddy! I need all the encouragement I can get and would love to help someone if I can!

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle? Mostly it's wanting to fit into my clothes a little better, & to look my best. I'm also (reluctantly) looking to get my sugar consumption under control.

2) What is your goal for this challenge? To lose 5% of my body weight. I haven't weighed myself in the last few days, but this loss should put me very close to my long-term goal weight.

3) What diet are you following? Deliciousness diet: colorful, spicy, mouth-satisfying foods with the protein, fiber, vitamins, etc., to keep me healthy & the calorie range to allow me to lose weight.

4) What is your favorite exercise? Fast walking outdoors.


5) Two random fun facts about you? I just celebrated my only granddaughter's first birthday! And though I was born in Kansas City, I grew up in Colombia, South America, so I'm fluent in Spanish.

Hi everyone! My name is Whitney. This is my first challenge, but I am ready for it! Happy to be a emoticon

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
I have been yo-yoing around for about a decade now, but my weight really creeped up in college and the years following. I am now at my highest weight ever, and a physical 10 pounds less than I am now revealed high cholesterol. I am only 24, so this is serious. It was a wake up call, but still, I gained 10 lb since then. I need to regain control, and I am serious about it!
2) What is your goal for this challenge?
Lose 5% - However, I'm 10 lb over my healthy weight range, so I'd be happy just getting back in that area. I would like to be on the lower end, eventually. I want to be more fit and healthier.

3) What diet are you following?
Sparkpeople food tracking. I eat mostly whole grains, and try to eat lower sodium. It is hard to do with packaged foods! I cook a lot of sparkrecipes.

4) What is your favorite exercise?
Right now I mostly walk or do Jillian Michael's "30 Day Shred," but it is hit and miss with that. I am most consistent with walking.

5) Two random fun facts about you?
I want to run a 5K this summer. I hope to be a nurse by 2014!

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
I love meeting new people on Spark! I can use all the help I can get!

To lose weight! I've gained back about 10 of the 35 I'd lost and I'd really like to get back down to where I was (and beyond!)

Spark nutrition guidelines and a low-fat E-meals plan, modified.

Swimming, jogging and dancing!

Hi one and all! My name is Colleen and I live in the High Desert of Southern California.

Why I decided to get healthier is easy- I gained weight until I weighed 311 pounds. I never thought I would be that fat! But here I was. Since then I lost almost 70 pounds and then put back on 30 of them. I know for me it is a mental thing, so I am working to change my habits in all areas of my life.

My goal for this challenge is to lose the 5 % body weight and get myself back on track to healthier habits.

My diet is one that my nutritionalist recommended, which is very much like what the nutrition tracker has set up for us. I have been to WW and really like their diet, so I will most likely do a little combination of the two.

My favorite exercise is walking, but I live in a very rural area where there is a lot of wildlife, snakes, coyotes, dogs, and some large cats, so needless to say I can walk around my yard, but I don't like to walk the neighborhood. Instead I bought a gazelle and I do enjoy zumba on the wii.

As far as random fun facts... I don't know if you would list them as fun, but I am an artist and teach art at the local high school. I am also a pastor's wife. So, my life is pretty busy.

I would love to have a buddy, someone to nag and be nagged by! Someone to share victories! sounds great!

any thing else? Well, I am real happy to be a starfish!! I wanted to use my suckers to stick to things! Being a starfish we have more "Stick to it- ness" We won't lets "clams" (those nasty habits we developed) have a hold in our lives, we will devour them! What an opportunity to be at the beach, cute without the worry of what kind of bathing suit I need to wear and have a group of fellow starfish to chum around with! Go Starfish!!

Hi everyone...my name is Amber and this is my first 5% challenge. I'm 36 yrs old & live in Monmouth County NJ. I picked the starfish because I love the ocean and summer so I knew this team would be fun!

A few things about myself...

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle? I need consistency and accountability for my eating. When I go off track I go way off track.

2) What is your goal for this challenge? I would like to lose at least 5% of my weight by the end of the challenge but I also want to have fun doing it.

3) What diet are you following? Spark People

4) What is your favorite exercise? I have many running, cycling, zumba, walking the dogs

5) Two random fun facts about you? I'm a newlywed & I'm obsessed with shoes

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy? Sure...extra motivation is always welcome

Hi Starfishies! My name is Amy and I’m an Extra Leader (EL) for this challenge! I am 28 and live outside of Dallas with my husband!!

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
When I met my husband almost four years ago, I was in the BEST shape of my life after losing 80+ pounds on Medifast (heard of it?!). Since then, I’ve let myself go so to speak, and my weight has gone up and up and up…YIKES! I’m not the heaviest I’ve ever been, but as I get closer to that it freaks me out!! I have some big things coming up to motivate me…like my 10-year high school reunion in June and my friend’s wedding in September where I’m a bridesmaid, and I’d also like to lose weight to be healthy to start trying for a baby…NOT NOW, but you know, in the future!

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
To actually LOSE weight…the last few challenges have not gone well for me, but here’s to a successful challenge this time around! This is my third time to be an Extra Leader (EL) and I’m hoping that will motivate me to be successful so I can motivate our other team members.

3) What diet are you following?
I’m not really following a diet plan per se, but I’m thinking I should probably think about this more as I haven’t been doing well “winging it”…tracking my food will be a good starting off point, too, I believe. I love to cook, so trying new recipes from the SP Cookbook is fun and exciting for me (I hope that doesn’t sound too lame!).

4) What is your favorite exercise?
Zumba zumba zumba! And I’m getting into the running thing again…that is a big part of this challenge for me personally!

5) Two random fun facts about you?
I have a UT Longhorn tattoo on my inner left ankle with the Texas flag design inside of it.
I’m a bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding in September, and it is my first time being in a wedding…well, as a bridesmaid at least! I was a bride in my own wedding, of course! LOL

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
I’m open to new friends!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Starfish! The greatest team of all (in my most humble opinion).

My name is Carly, and I have been a starfish for many, many challenges (I have lost count..maybe 6?) I currently live in Tennessee, and I am very blessed to be able to be a stay at home mom to my son, Coby (almost 12) and the gaggle of neighborhood children who also seem to call here "home".

I am a vegetarian and love to cook and invent new recipes out of old, fattening recipes that I find. My husband and son are both huge meat eaters (go figure!), and they hunt and fish and are always excited to bring dinner home...which, I must say, I will cook, but I won't clean. I am not scaling any fish, or plucking anythings feathers...(laughs)..as I tell my husband all the time..."Tofu doesn't have feathers...LOL)" . So dinners around here can be very interesting, with a wide variety of options. We also do our own gardening, and have fresh veggies and some fruits for a good part of the year. The only diet I follow is vegetarian, and I try...really I do, to stay away from breads.

I am motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle by OLD AGE! (yikes!) The choices we make when we are young and healthy, somehow come back to haunt us as we get older. I have witnessed the decline of my parent's health as they battle the effects of the choices they have made, such as smoking, being overweight, lack of physical activity. They are now both battling COPD, diabetes, high blood pressure, and limited mobility. I don't want to be in that position then, knowing that I could have done something about it now.

My goal, as always, is to lose 5%. Losing 5%, (around 10 pounds) sounds so much more doable than losing 60 pounds. So...small doable 5% chunks, and eventually, they will add up to 60 pounds lost!

My favorite exercise is cardio. I love the elliptical, as I have some joint issues (hip and knee) after a car accident. The very first time I got on one, I thought I was going to die after the first minute, but now, I can go over an hour! I do cardio 4-5X a week, and I strength train (weight machines and free weights) 4X a week. (The rest of the time gardening and yard work keep me busy, and count as cardio on the trackers...yay!)

I always get stuck on the two random fun facts part. I have been a starfish for so long that nothing seems new and exciting, random or fun anymore...(laughs)..but I love to read and I love studying God's word. The two things that seem to take up the most of my day are filling up all the bird feeders...boy, who knew that hummingbirds could drink that much nectar in one day...I am talking gallons a day!...and letting the dogs in, and letting the dogs out, and letting the dogs in, and letting the dogs out...letting the dogs in...you get the point. I have a 3 year old YorkiePoo and just rescued a 3 year old West Highland Terrier, and believe me it is like having two toddlers around here!

I always welcome new buddies, and I have two real life friends joining this challenge as starfish this time.

I am so excited for this challenge to begin. I just missed goal by .02 of being the full 5%. Some would say that was close enough to be considered a success, but the OCD part of me says..."Nope...close, but 4.99, or (whatever it ends up being) is not 5%. So this challenge, I WILL hit 5%.

Hi everyone! I'm Emily, and I'm a grad student in Iowa. I've been a emoticon but I took a break during the winter challenge. I'm glad to be back for Spring!

1) What motivated you to take on a healthier lifestyle?
I lost 50 lbs from 2007-2009, and have kept most of it off. I started running in 2009 but really got addicted in 2011. Since my weight is relatively stable, my focus has shifted to improving my running times and overall fitness.

2) What is your goal for this challenge?
Lose 5% - I've never met that goal in all the challenges I've done. However, I'm only a few lbs above my weight range, so I'd be happy just getting back within that. My challenge is that I'm training for a half marathon, and when your body's training for long distance, it goes into starvation mode and holds onto everything, so I need to figure out a way to jumpstart my metabolism

3) What diet are you following?
Sparkpeople food tracking. I try to avoid HFCS and overly processed foods as much as possible, but I also have a sweet tooth.

4) What is your favorite exercise?
Right now I run 5 days a week, but in April I'll start training for my 3rd triathlon, so I'll throw some biking and swimming into the mix too.

5) Two random fun facts about you?
My long term goal is to complete an Ironman Triathlon before I turn 30 in February 2016. I also have a stuffed dog that I sleep with every night (except when I've traveling) that I've had for almost 9 years.

6) Would you like to have a Spark buddy?
I love meeting new Sparkies!

7) Anything else you would like to share?
I love these challenges. Even though I have yet to meet my 5% goal, they keep me accountable and I love the camaraderie within this team!

Hey team!

My name is Allison, I'm a college student from Tennessee. I'm not really sure what motivated me to take on a healthier lifestyle but all I know is I have to succeed in it. My goal is to just be healthier, thinner, happier, and more confident in my own body. The diet I'm following is just counting calories and slowly trying and adding new healthy things to my list of foods I like, which is currently kind of short, but it'll grow slowly! I'm not sure if I have a "favorite" exercise...but I usually just enjoy anything that gets me moving, having fun, and burning as many calories as possible! Two random facts...hmm...I once got a $1000 bracelet for free at a bridal show for showing a guy some Tylenol and I went to Hawaii as a freshman in high school. :)

I would also love to have more Spark buddies, the more the merrier with me! Also, just thought I would let y'all all know, because I'm a college student, I may not be able to post daily because sometimes my schedule is busier than normal because of assignments or practicing (I'm an instrumental music education major), so if I don't post, don't freak! :)
