Hello! My name is Russell, and I am 38. I was diagnosed with CHF at 27, and told I had 6 months to live..then diagnosed diabetic at 28, put on cholesterol meds that same year, and had my first ICD put in at 31.
Now I am 137 lbs lighter, my BP is low with the meds I take, my cholesterol meds are about to be gone( July ) if #'s continue improving, and I have been off diabetes meds for 2 full years, and my A1C is 5.4.
All of my improvements started 3 years ago, when I finally realized none of the things they were doing fixed any of my problems, they treated them. I read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, and started in May of 2009. My doctor's maoaned that I was going to kill myself.. low carb was dangerous. Now they see a 10 lb drop every 3 months, and low BP, low cholesterol, and a normal A1C, and congratulate me.
Of course, they can't recommend what I did.. its still unhealthy. I think what doctors don't know is much more than what they do. No one ever believes that 50 years from now, we will look back and laugh at what was common knowledge, as being completely wrong, but 75 years ago, they presribed a cigarette in K rations ( WW2 ), to help dry out the lungs.. a health benefit! I am sure in 50-75 years we will be laughing about the things we thought were correct today.
