I struggle with the descriptions too. One is body muscles and tendons in space and the other is inner ear and balance. So, I just looked it up.

It is the vestibular that I struggle with. I had several episodes of dizziness that included some vertigo on the drive home today. I had to pull over. Still not feeling great.

My Step-son's fourth grade teacher had him run around the school when he started amping up in class. He was like that toddler in the commercials in the 1980s with the zippy walker. Very active. It worked so well for him, that I had my son run the block when he was wound up. One turned into a sprinter and the other a long distance runner. I tried it on all my students to see who benefited from running. I would say about 30 percent could run and burn off the anxiety or anger or just plain squirreliness. It was great, because I would send an aide to watch and one of my high school TAs from the alternative school to run with them. The high schoolers were even calmer after running. Nothing like releasing some endorphins. Jumping is what worked best for me. Knitting is what I do now to burn off the emotions and calm myself.

I like both cats and dogs, have lived with both. But only well-trained dogs. In our neighborhood we have so many nuisance dogs that it's actually soured me on owning one. That, and my intense allergies to all things with fur that developed in my 20s.

Our swing system was easy to swap out hammock swings with hanging sack-style pods, with actual swings, and a crazy disc swing that he got way too wild on. And it could still hold him if he just didn't get so crazy with it.

The mini-trampolines now come with a handle, I think it's required. Anyway, it helps a lot with the safety. But we have SUCH a small house that even the little trampolines aren't great. Plus, he only tried to use it to jump off our indoor balcony (he was certain he'd be safe if he landed on a trampoline...um NO, we didn't let him try it!) He never used it for it's intended purpose (to bounce). But he runs sprints along that "run" we keep open for him. So it's all ok. And he also often hits the door hard at one end of the run, so he's getting that proprioceptive feedback (or is that the vestibular? I confuse them, especially when sleep deprived).

I would have loved home visits with you too. It is the willingness to keep trying and exploring different options that makes for happier children. I had one parent rig an "S" track system to the ceiling like those privacy curtains in hospitals only super heavy duty. Then they hooked different swing set ups to it so their child could bounce around the living room or walk, or lay in a hammock. Mom could slide her to whatever part of the house she was in and keep her in motion. Of course the older brothers wanted to play in it. It didn't work out as well as hoped, but the idea was great and they kept trying. I liked it because it gave my student passive motion for the lymphatic system.

I loved those mini trampolines for burning off anxiety at work. But the insurance company took ours away from us even when I promised that it was only for adult staff to de-stress. No room here for one. GD still bounces around on her toes if she is excited about something. So my carpet gets messed up. She has gotten better about moving her Tigger routine into the kitchen instead of on the rug. Mostly because I make her fix the rug. I have told her that home is the perfect place to unwind like that. So she isn't trying to inhibit herself all the time.

This and That: Dogs or Cats? I can't remember what I have asked... I love both, but am especially fond of my dog. Personality wise, dogs are more like horses. I love horses. And they exercise us. Cats though are so soothing when they will actually sit in your lap and purr. Would have both if it wasn't for the litter box issue.

Chocolate pie! But for Thanksgiving, and only for Thanksgiving, Pumpkin pie.

Chris: I admire that you made the choice to travel alone with hubby firmly dug in his heels! Bra-VO! That's such a cool decision to make. Also, I never realized he had an alcohol problem.

Travel: If an RV, it would be a rental. I'm not interested in storing one. But I've always thought that if my husband died or retired, I'd travel by RV for a year. I used to love it. It's just too hard now, and I'm fearful of what other countries (and part of our country) policies are on special needs kids. And how to handle some unexpected behaviors.

We used to take him everywhere. Workers always commented on how cool it was that we exposed him to so much life, and that we didn't apologize for him all the time. We did try to teach good behavior in the moment, and if that wasn't good enough for some people, well, too bad.

My son is a wonder. He has a ton of lovable strengths. Puberty, however, has really thrown a blanket on so many of them. He just refuses to do so many of the things he can. We've modified so much of our home to encourage his growth as a person, as a musician, and have so many coping things in our home, you'd laugh! At one point, his OT commented that she loved coming to our house b/c she didn't have to bring anything with her, I had it all. We have an industrial strength swing mount in our ceiling (currently doesn't have a swing but that's b/c the room is now too small to accommodate his nearly 6' frame swinging indoors anymore! But he had it for most of his young life. We got him a rocker recliner to take the place of that movement need.

Our living room has NO furniture, only musical instruments for him. We keep a "run" free of furniture and anything trippable so he can run back and forth when he needs to.

I definitely look at him with eyes of love and adoration, and even admiration. Life is HARD for him. And putting myself in his place, I feel for him greatly. But he's also a stubborn teen, who can be infuriating, aside from the ASD, OCD, and other fun stuff all bagged in there.

(my turn for book writing? LOL)

Ok, I'm ridiculously behind in all things Spark again. On to something else!

What can I do for myself today?

At lunch we discussed weddings and whether we would do them the same way or not. Considering how fancy and expensive weddings are getting this might be a ridiculous question for young people.

This or That (future or do-over) Traditional wedding or destination wedding?

Considering how many times I have been married and the fact that I never had either this is kind of a weird question. I just got married. No fanfare, no destination. They also did not last. I guess if I had to do it over again (as a young person), I still would not want the fanfare. I would probably escape to someplace wonderful and just get married.

Mom and Dad went with the Seniors to Banff Canada and other museums and sites of interest around Oregon and Washington. Now it seems the buses only run to the casinos, and they don't thrill me.

My TOPS group does a beach retreat annually. We usually go to Seaside or Rockaway in Oregon. Also my writer's group leader has a membership to Colony House in Rockaway. We all pitch in for that too. I have a group to travel with and it is cost effective. Our cruise leader likes to put together travel activities with groups too. So, far, I have only been asked to join the cruise to Alaska last summer and the Autism 5K at the beach in Warrenton. That could be cheap if I sign up early enough for the free cabins.

No I would not bring the kitty on a trip. I was just thinking of a day trip-at least for starters.

Where did you go on the senior trips?

Mom and dad took several Senior Bus tours with the Senior Center locally, but the Center doesn't do that any more. I would love to travel with a group of like minded people. That is why I sign up for the group activities with my clubs and the cruise.

Would you take your kitty with you on a road trip? I am lucky to have so many young folks around me to house and Buddy sit. But he is getting to an age where I hate to leave him for long.

This or That: Pumpkin, Apple or Chocolate pie for Thanksgiving dessert.

I am a very frustrated travelor. If I had my choice, I'd own a small "home" mostly for sleeping between trips. If I am honest, I got married to have a partner to travel with. Well that plan failed. Hubby has social anxiety. He is definitely a home body. Little did I know. ANd he was very different when we were dating. Well, I have to say even for 5 full years he put me on a pedestal. I knew that would end but it did last 5 years!

He traveled 400 miles to visit me in Buffalo from his home near NY city. You'd think he loved to travel, right? Looking back I now see his motivation to travel --when we did. But maybe 15 years into our marriage I decided to travel myself. And I did. He was disappointed and hated me leaving. But he would not make trips with me. I swallowed the fact that he was not going to change. I made some very nice trips to Brownsville, Texas to visit a friend and another friend in Houston. To my family near Buffalo quite a few times. I look back and realize alcohol was a reason he would not stay with my family when I or we visited. I'd stay with my Mom and sister and he'd stay in a motel. I never realized till recently that the alcohol made that happen. He'd always have another reason handy. We did go on an anniversary trip to ski in Vermont. I have wonderful memories of that. And we got to France--because our daughter did a student exchange there. But I would be traveling lots and lots . I could now leave him for a few days while the nursing home cares for him. But I need to complete some projects here first. I did enjoy my train trim to Baltimore. Oh and I got lots of free trips to places for teacher conventions and courses. I took advantage of every one I found! I soon will do a senior center trip. I need to find something I like. chris

RV was on my bucket list too. Not so sure now, as they are a lot of upkeep and I kind of like having a home. I can afford one or the other. Not both. LOL

I am blessed. And I try to be grateful for it every day. Many years ago there was a retreat/inservice training activity that required us to take a step forward or backward depending on how we answered questions regarding our lives. I was always at the front of the line for love, opportunity and blessings. Loving parents, simple life style in a modest house, but we had acreage and horses and traveled a lot and they kept me involved in church and 4-H and they taught us to express gratitude and to look for the good.

It is a lifestyle and having been an itinerant Spec Ed teacher for the birth to age 5 group, I did a lot of home visits. So many children do not grow up with that adoration and affection and it is such a hard thing to teach. One family I worked with had twins with ASD. They ate the carpet and walls. Basically their room and the living room were empty of everything. I understood Mom's need to keep them safe, but they also were not getting any stimulation or experiences to help them desensitize. Mom was so overwhelmed she would escape to her room to sew. I let her, and played with the boys during their visit. As long as I kept them actively engaged they were pretty good. Mom was taken under our supervisors wing and exposed to community advocacy for ASD awareness. She became a new woman when she was able to hire sitters and do something productive for herself with other adults. I don't know if she ever learned to look at them with adoring eyes instead of exhaustion and terror or not. I also can't imagine what they were like as teens. Hopefully, with Mom's new found power in advocacy she eventually learned these skills and that maybe they learned some good coping strategies for when they felt anxious and jittery.

Curious....Have you ever used Social Stories with him with any luck? I had some good luck with them with the foster children who came through our program with severe anxiety and lacking social skills. Not so much with my ASD students, but they maybe needed to be older and more mature before trying them.

Wow, I am into writing books today. Someday, I will tell you about being a teen mom from a respectable Christian family and three divorces and working two jobs while attending college and neglecting my kids. Also the bruises, death threats, drug overdoses and the swat team with their assault rifles. Even happy people have crap in their lives at times. And I am lucky that I had such a good base to survive those rough years and get quickly back to my place of love and joy.

So I predict that you will get to travel again and that you will have more "me" time to rest and recuperate. You are taking some good steps to expand your son's circle of experiences and friends. He too will pass through this hormonal stage and develop better coping skills. You will find some good respite care providers to keep him actively engaged in things that interest him.

Your life sounds so appealing to me! I'm afraid my train ride would be a vastly different experience, trying to manage my son amid all those people, being "trapped" with no opportunity to give him a change of scenery, no way to shield other travelers from his yelling when he is frustrated, and my constant worry should the slightest thing go wrong that triggers his rage that causes him to hit things. That would last much longer on a train.

However...

If I had your calm controllable life, I think I'd absolutely adore train travel and might do it pretty regularly. There are train tours that I often dream about taking. Heck, I'd love to take an RV and drive across the country, on the lower highways one way, and a mid or higher one the way back. Then do it again the next year with a different coast to coast highway! I used to enjoy travel so much!

What can I do for myself today?

What, I like about the train is that there is so much to see rolling by outside the windows. Brief glimpses of deer and coyotes, more water views than from the highway, interesting people to meet and visit with and the opportunity to get up and walk around whenever you feel like it. Also, you can find a table and read, knit, eat etc. I was able to relax and sprawl on the train. On the plane I have always been a tad stressed. The seats are so tight you have to move the whole row if you want to get out to use the restroom and then of course the seat belt light comes on you have to climb over everyone to get back in. But I might feel completely different if I was in first class in a sleeping chair. My budget travel on both makes me vote for the train as long as time is not an issue.

I'd love to try the new sleeping cubbies on Jet Blue's Mint. But...at this point in time, it's not flying anywhere I need to go. And, it's pricey.

I have a romantic view of train travel, but have never been on one long distance, don't even know if I could sleep. But it would be fun to try it.

I went from Connecticut to Baltimore , MD on a train. Much nicer than a bus. It was for a teacher convention. I enjoyed the waterfront in Baltimore. Buffalo is trying hard to make our waterfront a busy and exciting place . It has vastly improved in the last few years.

This or that: Given a choice and good sleeping accommodations on both would you rather travel by plane or by train.

I don't mind flying but I love train travel and a good sleeping compartment would be heaven.

Yes, on the blessings. When I lived in Portland, my in-laws were visiting and there was a boom. We were all speculating about things like a crash on the freeway, a transformer, etc. when BiL piped up. "It was probably a plane crash." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airline

Flight_173
I thought the pilot did an amazing job considering. I also think BIL was lucky in his guess. Not so much the 8 people who did not make it.

Glad you had a good time with Hubby and friends. Also, wondering if I read the book. I remember reading one based on a true plane crash on the East Coast. What is the name of book and author?

I do love Hocus Pocus ! Today at hubby's home we watched The Creature from the Black Lagoon. I had never seen it before. Interesting watching it with about 20 people in wheelchairs.

every Friday this month is a scary movie. I think I have to thank my family and friends in heaven. I really woke up sick and had planned not to see hubby today. But... I had to drive payment of taxes to the mail and I was OK so I went to the nursing home. I saw the movie, saw his doctor check out his rash so I got my 2 cents in, and got a great book from him. All in all a great visit!

The book is about the plane crash near here in 2009. It hit a house! Terrible, tragic event. I think over 20 people died. Interesting to me that the house owner wrote the book in her writing group! I borrowed the book to read at home. It is signed by the author. My brother's house really is not far from the crash site. emoticon

All that is extremely scary to me. I surly need to count my blessings more often.

chris

LOL

I love movies, well the ones I love anyway. I am a big fan of Sci Fi and Fantasy, romances and comedies. Love all the Halloween movies that are kid friendly. I watch the whole Harry Potter series, Twilight and Halloweentown every October. I will find Hocus Pocus somewhere and I just bought digital version of Goonies. That is such a wonderfully silly show. My kids loved it. In November I start watching all the Christmas movies (kids, comedies and romances). Also, there are usually good movies on at the Theater in November. After the Holidays, I am pretty much burned out on movies and TV.

I would be concerned about a psychiatrist who does not want to work with you to lower your medication. What is the medication? We can do an internet search on side effects and weaning and then you can approach him again better armed.

My aunt who was on prozac for years got severe dementia. My cousin told me one of the doctors told her it was the years of prozac. Good to look these things up and know for yourself.

I used to be an early riser. Then "poop out " by late afternoon. In the past couple of years I can't depend on a regular sleep schedule. I go one way for a few weeks and then change the sleeping pattern. Right now I am getting up between 10:00 am and noon. Once I slept in till 3:00 pm. That is REALLY unusual.

I am trying to lessen my fatigue. I am even asking a psychiatrist if reducing my depression meds would help. I have way less stress than ever in my life. But he says to keep it the same. He is trying to add one medication. I wish he had told me what it was! Delay in getting it. He did not ask my insurance if they would pay.

Today I got up at 10:00 am. I got really tired in the late afternoon but did not take a nap. It is 9:20 pm now. Hope the night goes well.

I would prefer to exercise with a friend but that has not lasted long for me.
During last year, I was going with a friend to water aerobics but then I had to move.

Maybe I will try again. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Wow... tough question!

I don't have any friends that I walk or do anything else with, but it does seem that would be helpful.

When I'm training for Bloomsday - the 12k (7.5mi) walk I do annually with my daughter - I do fine motivating myself to get out and get going. But the rest of the year, it's much harder to make myself get out, especially in the winter in WA state!

If I had a dog I'm sure I'd get out much more regularly - I've "borrowed" my mom's dog a few times and we always enjoyed our walks together. But with the travelling we do now, a dog just isn't going to work well. And my DH would object greatly - not really a dog person!

Good question for this or that. I wouldn't move at all if not for my dog, kids and friends. I realize this so I try to also round up friends for walks or swimming. If I am not visiting while exercising things start hurting or I get bored, or I come up with a million things I should be doing. The mind never ceases. Need to keep the body moving too.

We are ready for another This or That. Anyone have one they would like to share?

I like sight seeing roadtrips that don't necessarily require getting out of car too. I have a friend who is limited in how far she can walk. We love driving to the beach or across the river on the ferry. So much fun. Lots of talking and laughter.

I like both. I was just in a Baltic Sea cruise in June. We had beautiful weather every day. We always do a bus tour in each port. We see the city and countryside of the different ports.
I also like to take road trips. I took a 98 year old friend for a drive along a few beaches a few weeks ago. We don’t walk we just drive along.

It is wonderful having a good friend to hike with, but I do see where you might have issues. We also have bears and mountain lions. In my younger and stupider days I was hiking at Mount St. Helens with my son. It was hot and I was tired. We had found a beautiful lake and waterfall just off the trail. He was about 13 at the time. He asked if he could run over to the waterfall. I said; "Sure, No problem." As soon as he was out of sight and hearing range I heard a mountain lion scream. So here I am a hundred pounds overweight plowing through the woods screaming at the top of my lungs. Of course he couldn't hear me because of the waterfall. Hopefully, the cat heard me and redirected it's energy. I was in tears and gasping when I reached him. He hadn't heard the cat and was quite amused at me. On the way down the trail we started arranging rocks and sticks and leaves into arrows and pictures. The trail looped back and forth so we could hear the young people behind us finding our art and commenting, speculating and laughing. It really was a fun day despite my heart stopping for those few minutes. On another day trip there we stumbled across a pile of steaming bear poo. We were close to the main park with lots of people, so we talked loudly and walked calmly back to the car. Now, my walks or hikes are more in the local parks and along the river. Have encountered homeless people and one pervert on the local walks. The homeless people are great. Mostly mind their own business, but the pervert did not like the looks of Buddy so backed off quickly. Also, I was boring because I was non-reactive. So yes hiking even in town on public trails is best done with a partner too. Thanks for triggering some great memories.

Road trips over cruises - no seasickness or return to land-sickness (which I had longer than I had seasickness!).

Desert hiking is absolutely beautiful, just not in the summer sun!! But any hiking is awesome. I wish I could get back to it. Until my husband's job gets less time consuming, I can't see it happening unless I can start using my respite worker to come with us. My issue here is the rattlesnakes and bees (seen MANY of both on hikes). My son isn't really able to react quickly enough to either keep himself safe, or to alert anyone else. And he loves to walk up ahead. So...not very safe. Can't hike alone, that's a big no-no here with the mountain lion population (and rattlers). So...I'm kind of on hold until someone's life gets less complicated and can hike with me. A friend might be taking a bit of time off work soon, and I plan to press her for hikes!!

What can I do for myself today?

I like hiking! In general, my preference is hiking through the woods - I too like hiking next to a creek or river, hiking to a waterfall...

Hiking in the desert in spring before it gets too hot can be really nice, too, especially if there are wildflowers blooming.

Hiking in the woods or hiking in the desert?

I love the desert for driving in air conditioning and enjoying the scenery, but for hiking nothing beats a stroll with a dog on the leash though a bunch of tall fir next to a creek.

Road trips or cruises?

Impossible choice! They each have their pluses. Cruises: no packing/unpacking, meals readily available - no decisions on where to go. Entertainment, scenery, meals, and so much more within "walking distance". But you're not going to see the Grand Canyon, or Bryce, or so many of the country's (or the world's) amazing places from a cruise!

I would like road trips even better if we had more time to enjoy the road - it seems we're often focused on the destination.

Fruits or vegetables:
Both! I tend to eat more fruit because it generally requires less prep. When I do smoothies, I use both. I'll add greens and carrots to whatever fruit(s) I'm having.

We had mostly frozen veg growing up and I liked nearly everything. Never cared much for little green limas. Canned peas - gross! Back then, fresh fruits and vegetables were mostly limited to what was relatively local. We did have more canned fruit in the winter, fresh in summer. I never had asparagus growing up. My mom would occasionally buy a can of asparagus - apparently it was rather pricey as she kept it mostly to herself. I tried it once and disliked it, so I always thought I didn't like asparagus. A friend bought some fresh when we were in college - much to my surprise, I discovered I LOVE asparagus!

Funny, I had a similar experience with vegs. Growing up we only had canned. Discovered fresh as an adult and began to really enjoy vegs! In fact, I now eat more vegs than fruits.

Land/water: Land. Walking at the beach is very nice, but I don't enjoy going in the water very much. Too many critters, and the ocean is SO strong in the pacific! I have a healthy respect for her strength, and mostly stay out.

Land/water: Both. I love swimming with friend, kayaking and boating and also love walking the dog, hiking in the woods and gardening.

morning/night: Tendency is to stay up late and sleep in, until just recently. Less processed foods and eating at scheduled times I have been waking at 7am and wanting to crawl in bed about 10:30 pm.

This or that: FRUITS/VEGETABLES

I did not like veggies as a kid. Canned green beans and peas yuck. I did like cauliflower with cheese on it. Never met a fruit I did not like. Now that I am old, I love veggies too. Of course I prefer buying them fresh or frozen and cooking them into soups.

Yes, I am with you! My son is going through the teenage phase of wanting to stay up until 4 or 5am. I love staying up late when it's my idea, but when it's someone else's, it's not great. I've managed to push it back to 2am (asleep) and at the moment, I'm pretty thankful for that. But I do need to get it even earlier. It's just so hard. We start getting him ready for bed at midnight, but he piddles so much it takes 2 hours! And it's not worth fighting with him about it b/c then he's awake even longer.

I'm a night person as well. I try to fight myself as I don't like sleeping too much of the day away, so I end up not getting enough sleep! I seem to slide towards getting to bed between 1:30 and 2:00 AM, then I try to work back towards 12:30. (Just looked at the clock - it's 12:50 AM as I'm writing this!)

Don't have a new idea, but water vs. land...

I used to swim regularly MANY years ago. Now it just seems so inconvenient - driving to the pool, changing, swimming, showering & changing, driving home. The whole process seems to take 2 or 3 times as long as the amount of exercise. I do enjoy swimming however, so if I had a pool or one within a block or two, I'd probably do more.

Walking has been my main form of exercise for many years now - this past year I've really slowed down because of bad/worsening knees. So I really can't get my cardio that way right now.

I know... I should get back to the pool!

Do you have another idea for this or that? Anything!

I have to be diligent about caring for myself. 100 DAYS OF WEIGHT LOSS is a great way for me to keep focused. Day 1 is July 1, 2017. Build habits to produce success. Most of these habits I have at least tried before but did not sustain. First habit: delay eating by using a timer.

I enjoy my "land" walks, aim for 10k a day. Healing a fracture in my ankle so do not always make it and that's ok. Evening eating patterns have improved since I switched to a vegan-ish diet 3 weeks ago.
