Janet, A good sense of humor takes us far. I use that, too.

I would not say I am the most successful person here, but I don't stop trying. And right this second, I seem to be making progress.

It is humbling for me to think of the many years I have been overweight. I had to get over it and be the best person I can despite that.

I have been a normal weight for a number of years in my twenties and thirties. But I grew up overweight and when life hit I never did get my eating under control again.

This team has so many people that post their ups and downs! I am so grateful for their sharing. It helps me tremendously. I feel comforted when others share that they are struggling. And it sure helps me also to hear how others tackle this problem.

Hi all.
The team title says it all for me. I pack 2 well thought out meals every day. Most days I survive work without adding junk to my meals. Even daytime at home I behave.
Then... IT...happens. The monster within bursts forth and I graze from cabinet to cabinet in search of, well, anything! I've eaten a spoonful of BBQ sauce to see it that's what I'm looking for. A cracker here, cheese there, a bit of this and that.
Looking for the holy grail in a box of something crunchy?

Who knows? At least you'll find I have a sense of humor!

I have issues with hunger even though I've eaten very well during the day I still get hungry. Then there's blood sugar issues - those really drive up the problem. Boredom is another. I have been doing some of the walk at home moves while watching TV at night which is helping. I am doing better since I stand up and walk while watching tv. I don't follow the tapes exactly but mix up my own routines and keep the pace as lively as I can.

Start with small steps and momentum will build. Celebrate moving in the direction of increased happiness now! With a plan and persistence moving towards your goals all things are possible! Adopt an attitude of gratitude. Be thankful for everything you have. It may not be what you want be show you're thankful for it anyway.

I truly believe eating sugar has a lot to do with my evening eating.
What is everybody eating after dinner?
When I stopped eating after dinner 47 days ago I was eating dry granola cereal every night.
I stopped eating sugar the same day.

Pam, I am exactly the same way. People say to eat a good breakfast and a healthy lunch and maybe a small afternoon snack. OK. But none of that stops me from stuffing myself late in the day. I even tried Glucerna as a snack in the afternoon. that did nothing to fill me up. I guess it is not hunger or even low blood sugar. I get tired! then I have no resistance to the food. I sure hope by posting here and getting ideas, we can help each other. I did find that drinking water helps some. good luck and please keep posting here. Chris emoticon

Hi -

I'm Pam and I joined because I consistently eat well during the day, then once I get home from work I swear I just unhinge my jaw, and eat everything in the house (or order stuff to eat if there is nothing "good" around).... If I could get that under control, I KNOW I can lose the weight I want to lose.

Because the first way to resolve a problem is to admit you have one. I do great all day but once the kids are home, cooking dinner, then going to work at night, I tend to nibble in the evening. Great goals and like minded people getting healthy..

I never used to get up in the middle of the night to eat. I don't know how I ever started doing that. I know I think it will put me back to sleep!

I sure hope I can stop this additional bad habit! emoticon

I joined because this is my nightly downfall. Almost every night. I actually find it easier to get to sleep when I'm ALMOST uncomfortably full. Every time I've lain in bed and been unable to sleep, I get up and get something to eat. After I've done this a few times, I do eventually get to sleep. I'm starting to think that an addiction to sleeping pills would be less damaging to my health and wellbeing.

Those darn goodies call to us!

It is so hard to put them in the trash or get rid of them. then we are tempted.

I just ate the rest of the hazlenut chocolate candies! I was rationing them and then yesterday I got out of control!

I joined his team a while back because of all the trips to the kitchen I was making "after hours." I then changed my food plan, and my mindset with it, and that worked extraordinarily well for a while. In fact, I stopped coming by this site during that time because I was no longer troubled by night time eating! I always knew, in the back of my mind, that it could start up again, and it has, so Hi again!
There are so many factors to compulsive overeating, whether daytime, or night time, that I don't even know what caused it to start again. I do know that the night time eating is a habit of choice. I have to make the decision whether to transfer into another wheelchair to go get my snacks, and then come back with them to my room with the TV. One night I chose to talk myself out of the night eating and I did. One of the problems I have had in the past week is that foods came into my house that I did not want to be there and they called me from the other room. I'm getting rid of the last 3 goodie boxes today, and hopefully, that should help me stop again.

I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME. Phil. 4:7

I'm doing OK with the breakfast but not before 10:00 am. Then I usually have lunch at 1:00 pm. The problem with lunch is that if I am out shopping I don't even think about lunch. So I try to snack wisely in the afternoon. I am still a night eater, but not as often. I am hoping to reduce it more as time goes by.

Skipping meals and becoming overly hungry by evening can lead to nighttime binge eating. Recent studies revealed that when people ate three meals a day only 13% binged. When people skipped breakfast, 24% binged and when people skipped breakfast and lunch, 60% binged. In general, people who spread their meals throughout the day seem to be better able to control their eating.

So, Step #1 Be sure to eat breakfast! And lunch! emoticon emoticon

Hi! emoticon

Welcome to a whole bunch of friends who find themselves tripping up in the evenings!

This is such a hard problem. New members force me to recheck my habits. So you helped me already!

Be sure to post as often as you can. It is like church, I guess. If you don't go you can't get the benefits!

If you don't mind, could you tell us a bit more about yourself--maybe in the daily chat thread?

See you here--often..... Chris

I started back Spark people a few weeks ago. Ive been looking for a team. One of my first messages I wrote I shared my nightly eating problem. No one replied, after that Ive been to numerous message boards and team posts. Ive never seen this discussed before , thanks so much for starting this. I might fit in somewhere now. I have only lost 4.5 lbs since I started back. My nightime eating consists of 90% suger items. I always get hungry for it at bedtime. When I start I can't stop until Ive had 5 times my limit. Nothing seems to satisfy that hunger that doesn't have sugar in it. So looks like my first challenge should be the 3 day no sugar challenge. Im so HAPPY I found this!! emoticon

Evening Eating is a problem for many people. I am glad you all joined. I hope the team is helping you. Let us know how you are doing.

In June when I started this team I was quite determined to cut down my evening eating.
Now it is October and I am still wrestling with that problem. Darn.

I am eating more healthy foods all day and in the evenings. My weight has gone down a bit more since June. I am losing very slowly, 24 lbs. in 2-3 years. But it is down. In that time I could have gone up to 300! I am so glad spark friends chat with me and give me support.

Wow, I have been looking for a team like this. I do so good during the day, but at night it is like I turn into an uncontrollable eating monster. Seems like I have always had problems with night eating and I know that has contributed to all this weight gain. I just found out I am pre-diabetic about 2 weeks ago and I am still overeating at night. Looks like that would wake me up!! I look forward to meeting y'all!

I'm a really new member, but not new to SP. Hi, I joined this team because I do well for the most part during the day and then at mid afternoon till late night the cravings come for sweet and I have a hard time resisting. I've always eaten over half my calories in the evening.

To Monika 1948: I like the picture of your wire haired pointer, or is it a Griffon? I can never tell the difference.
About the tendency to eat the whole box. I realized I could not have snack foods in the house. I never have chips or anything like that, but even crackers are too much of a trigger. Can't buy any sweetened cereal or I will eat it out of the box. Can't have fiber one bars, eat too many of them. Can't make muffins on low cal quick breads.
I have tried the frozen yogurt cups, can also do low cal puddings. Like the cantaloupe idea. Watermelon works too. I freeze bananas in summer, but have to be careful not to go back for seconds. Grapes also freeze well. In fact any fruit purees can be frozen.

I finally got to my goal earlier this year - but have stopped tracking and have been eating out of control in the evening. Was looking at a blog from Maggierosebowl and came across this team. In looking at your team, I see there are several from our Over 60's team here, also.

Thanks.......vista

Hi, my name is Linda and I live in the Kansas City Metro area. I have been with Sparkpeople a little over 4 years and love it. Still struggle daily with the weight issues but so much more healthy than before Spark.

I am so happy I found this team and hope it will help me form better habits in the evening hours. I like the idea of closing the kitchen at a certain time each evening. I usually get home from work around 6 p.m. and it seems like once I have eaten dinner...I can't stop eating until bedtime. I think it must be a form of relaxation for me. I, too, do great during the day. I pack my breakfast and lunch in my Sparkpeople bag and take it to the office each day, drink my water & exercise. It is at night that I wipe out all those good intentions. I did better last night because of some of the comments on this team.

Hi Monica! We are all here to get support! No shame in that! It seems to be working, too. Try the ACCOUNTABILITY thread even if the first week or so is rocky. I think it is the best way to take an honest assessment. Plan to do a bit better the next week. By doing this I have pinpointed some things that really help me control myself. Eating in the evenings is the reason I have not been losing weight. If I can control that, I know I will lose weight. Many people here are "closing their kitchens" at a certain hour in the evening. Some people have set a goal of 3 days in a row without sugar. That helps cut cravings tremendously. Drink lots of water so dehydration doesn't start cravings and it is great to get rid of body toxins and fat flushing out.
'Nuff said! Glad to have you here--and all other new members. emoticon Chris

The evening is definitely the time of day where I sabotage the whole day's efforts, especially since that it the time that I used to sit in front of the TV and mindlessly graze.

Now if I'm in front of the TV, I find something for my hands to do other than pass food to my mouth. I'll do the mending then, (usually by hand cause I'm hopeless with a sewing machine), or find something else to do. My nailpolish has changed colour three times this week!

Thank you for the warm welcome, Chris! I'm looking forward to getting involved with the team.
Moat and drawbridge, huh? I'll have to look up instructions for that in case I need to take drastic measures. Hopefully, it won't come to that.

Have a wonderful Wednesday! emoticon

Debbie, Welcome! emoticon

People here are very supportive. They have lots of tips to handle those long evenings! Accountability is important to the members here. Chatting is great but we do want some progress, too. Good luck to you! Have you found any specific tactics that might help you? Like building a moat and drawbridge to close up the kitchen in the evenings? emoticon Chris

I joined the team to get support and some suggestions for dealing with night time snacking. I also think having accountability will help. Evenings are probably my most difficult time of day. It's my de-stress time, but it's also when I deal with fatigue and boredom, too. After having a good dinner, I shouldn't need to eat anything else before bed, and it's always junk food that I'm craving and nothing healthy. I don't care much for veggies, and don't usually crave fruit at night either.

Why did I join this team? Well if it wasn't for night time eating I probably wouldn't be overweight.

Hi,
Why did I join this team? Because the name of this forum is ME! I can be good and eat healthy all day, but when I get home from work, that's when the problem starts. I don't know what it is, but I need something at night especially a snack right before bed. The only way I am solving the problem is to not buy it, not have it in the house, so I am not tempted. However, lately, because there is nothing else around, I haved been having a bowl of oatmeal for my evening snack. The low sugar kind. This is a lot better than cookies or ice cream.

Hi! I'm Moxiegal! I joined the team because I like the accountability goal. I graze in the evening. I think it started when I became a mother. It's always been so easy and convenient to finish off those dinner leftovers too little to save and far too wasteful to throw away. In addition, I almost always read in bed before nodding off and I'm likely want a snack with me.

So...I'm positive you started this team just for me. I work until 6 or 7 pm and pack enough food to complete all of my healthy meals before I return home.

So there is no reason for me to eat after 6 pm. but does this stop me? NOOOOOOOOO. And do I eat healthy food when I return home? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

My main goal is to have only an evening protein shake after I return home...to make certain I've gotten all of my protein needs in for the day.

I'm grateful to be here and willing to learn why I do this and help any others in any way I can.

Hi All! My name is Bren and my biggest struggles are in the eve's - most eve's actually. Iam emotional eater and have struggled with it for years - but have only finally come to terms with it recently. It feels liberating to know I am not alone!

My husband is wonderful to me all the time, but does not understand or respect my pleas to get the junk out of the house since he says it is not fair to him. So, it's a challenge for me to sit on the sofa next to him while he is eating a bunch of oreo's I tried to chew gum last time he did it over the weekend, but I swear I ended up with 4 pieces in my mouth! : ))

Nice to meet you all. Let's keep each other strong!

Evening and night time snacking is a very difficult problem for me. I have to get up several times a night and many times find myself just grabbing a snack "to help me go back to sleep". Almost like someone else is making me do it. It is a compulsion. I'm doing better, but wanted to see what others have done & maybe get some tips on how to stop this destructive behavior. I've been doing a lot of self-talk about this one! Thanks!

I joined because evenings are my most difficult time. I start off with a reasonable, portioned snack, but then it's one more thing & one more .......well you get the picture! I have had two days on track. Today I'm working on #3! I need all the support I can get. I read DebbieDay's blog which lead me to this team....thanks Debbie!

Hi, I joined this team because I do well for the most part during the day and then at night the cravings come for salty/sweet and I have a hard time resisting especially when other family members are eating the snacks in front of me. Hoping to get a handle on this and/or find other snack foods that I can have when the cravings hit that don't have as many calories and still satisfy.

emoticon I get off work at 11pm. Part of destressing from work is EATING.
I am on a 'hard boiled egg' kick. It is a small, hi protein item. I eat it as I walk out the door.
Then snack on an apple as I drive home. You need that 20 minutes after eating a protein before the brain says OK I have eaten. Often do top it off with a dinner roll or serving size of potato chips or pretzels.

Putting all of these items in 'serving size' baggies Is better than eating out of the big bag. emoticon
Hoping to find other 'healthy snack' ideas for this late nite craving.

Okay...update on my frozen Cantaloupe. I was asked a question about this.
I'd never tried freezing it before and my friend Ronnie had said it was very good.
So, I just cut them up & added to freezer bags...well, I found that they stick together. So, I just set the bag here in a bowl by my computer & the outer ones are thawing enough & you can take them out and I have no problem with frozen Cantaloupe...very fresh & yummy. I'm sure they would have to be eaten frozen and that's what I wanted. Cheaper than popsicles.
I was wondering if I should have frozen them on cookie sheets but I'm okay with this myself....I'm the only one that will nibble on it...Paul won't touch it!
So, I've learned something and it's nice to have a new cold treat!

I've always eaten over half my calories at night as usually don't feel nearly as hungry during the day. Since Sp I usually eat a healthy dinner and I'm within my calorie range but hours later right before bedtime I feel hungry and want to eat something significant. Most of the time I eat a couple of late night unhealthy snacks either right before bedtime or in bed. I"m now trying to eat later in the evening and I think that has helped me. I still need support and motivated to not snack late at night as I can't be that hungry if I just ate 2-3 hours earlier. If I snack late at night I'm at least going to make sure I have healthy yogurts, fruits/veggies, etc.

I think it would be great if everyon (new AND old) leaves a note about why they joined. Just a thought. I'm a really new member, but not new to SP.

I have always been an evening nibbler/snacker/eater. I used to plan a snack for the evening so I wouldn't feel deprived or hungry, but not anymore--it really works for some people, but for me it is like turning on the switch inside me somewhere that says a little more won't hurt and just a taste or a whole bag of popcorn isn't that much more. Guess you get my drift. Besides--what's going to happen if I have to go a few hours without putting something to eat in my mouth?

Right now I have this under control, but it is lurking around out there and I'm hoping to get some ideas about how to continue to manage this problem.

Jeannie

I was doing too much evening snacking too. I've realized that what I need to do is to go to bed earlier. I'm doing that and doing much better. I can read in bed if I'm not ready to sleep yet and it keeps me from getting something to eat.

I'm a night time snackaholic! I go to bed with trail mix, cereal, rice cakes, cookies, pretzels, whatever etc to help me read my book! I do get exercise when I have to keep getting up to sweep out the crumbs on my sheets! LOL
This has practically stopped since joining this team though! I've only had 2...maybe 3 nights of night nibbling since joining!
I love it!

I guess this area is for new members but who cares if "old" members want to write something here, right?

"Old" is not the right word-- maybe "experienced" is what I should say. The team is only a few weeks old anyway. We have no "old" members!
