Lois - So glad you are feeling a bit better! As you get more "into" SP and add to your SP friend base you will really get comfy! This has become my social media outlet. Oh I still do FB for family once a week or so but I'm here every day! emoticon

HI everyone - I am doing a bit better in my outlook. I like reading your posts and what's on your sparkpages. It's all very motivating. I can see there's been a lot of weight lost among all of you so it makes me feel like it's possible.

Thank you for the info about the breathing - will give that a try.

I hope to chat with you all soon - Lois

Hi Lois
Welcome! I understand you saying, "I'm scared." It is hard when you are starting any group, any activity, when one is larger then others. I know!
Also, when your in pain when you move, that is so hard. I would like to suggest, to strengthen your muscles, before trying to walk any distance. If standing hurts and you need to sit down for a bit before continuing with the household chore or project you were working on. I would like to teach you the correct way to breath: sit down, breath in through your nose to the count of 5 extending your stomach out as your doing this, then let the air out through pierced lips to the count of 8 or longer til stomach is back where it was and air is out. To begin do this 10 times every waking hour, that you think about it. Hopefully, it will be 8-10 times a day. after this becomes the normal way of breathing (correct way) watch a baby breath. In the meantime, bring in your stomach to the count of five and release through pierced lips slowly, five X to begin, then move to buttocks and squeeze in and release, as described above. Then do each area of leg, first thigh several times, then knee, then calf, then move to other leg and do each thing the same number of times as you did the other leg, you can also do upper arms and then lower arms the same way. Do all of these each day, as your doing these you are burning calories, also. If you want more, let me know. Hugs Linda

Hi Lois and welcome to the team! This is a great bunch of people and as you can see they are all really supportive. I started out here at 422 pounds and I am now almost down to 200 pounds 2 years later. It has been quite the journey and so well worth it. I am feeling great and I could never have done it without the support of the people on SparkPeople and my friends and family at Weight Watchers. I am even dating a man from Weight Watchers and we are planning on getting married next year. You can do this too and we will be with you every step of the way. As others have said, just take it one step at a time and don't try to make big changes all at once. Making small, consistent changes is best and easiest to stick with. Don't ever be afraid to ask questions and ask for help when you need it. If you fall off the wagon, don't be afraid to get back on. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get right back to it. We all have bad days and we splurge or eat something that we shouldn't, but that is just life. The key is to learn from our mistakes and move on. If you have a bad day, make sure it doesn't turn into a bad week. There are a million other little things I could tell you, but you will figure things out for yourself as you go along. Just remember we are always here for you. Take care and good luck with your journey. I look forward to getting to know you better!! I hope to see you on the boards.,

Hugs, Lauri

Always remember you are braver than you believe,
stronger than you seem,
smarter than you think,
and loved more than you know!

Hi Lois. Welcome to the team. If you want to go for a walk I wouldn't let what other people might think or even say stoop me from enjoying the fresh air. You have just as much right to be out as they do and if they don't like it, well let them lump it. If it really does make you uncomfortable, as others have said, there are walking videos on sp and on you tube. emoticon

Lois - Getting the fresh air is terrific but if you absolutely cannot get over the feeling of "being looked at" there are walking DVDs and I think SP has walking videos as well so you can "take a walk" in your home! I know as hard as I try, I cannot get over the thought of people "staring" even though I know they have much better things to do with their time.

Lois - There were times I was too embarrassed to walk in the light of day, so I would go out in the evenings. If strolling around your condo is too challenging, scope out the surrounding area and drive to a spot where you would be more comfortable. With that said, most people are so absorbed in what they're doing that they're not paying attention to others. I work with a personal trainer, and the gym is not very large. When I first joined, I was very self-conscience, and my trainer assured me that the other members were busy concentrating on their own workouts. However, I still find it disconcerting that he can tell whether or not I'm squeezing my glutes. When I said "this is embarrassing", he proceeded to give me a demonstration by contracting his glutes. A big thumbs up on that one. How often does a hot guy invite you to check out his butt? I might be a fat, old lady, but I'm not dead.

The upside on taking the visible approach is that others will note your progress and be encouraging. When I walk through the neighborhood, people cheer me on. At the gym, compliments are given to my trainer and not me. Wouldn't you know it?! Thankfully, he's a sharing kind of guy.

Don't worry about anyone else. Just get out in the fresh air and enjoy your walk. You'll be a happier person for it.

Leslie

Good morning to all of you and thank you so much for your outpouring of support. I feel like my body has become my enemy (not an emotionally healthy way to feel, I know)....it just keeps ballooning! And I am feeling more and more uncomfortable in it as I age.

So, here I am to try to lose some of the weight and feel better and stop hiding (which I have started to do). I am embarrassed to go outside to walk for even 10 minutes (as we live in a condo community) but I am going to try.

Thank you so very much! emoticon

Hello Lois!! Have you ever come to the right place to feel understood! I jumped on this bandwagon seriously in July of this year and I already feel so much better about life! The support on this team is magnificent. Actually the support all over SP in magnificent. You will make great friends on here and find the support you need if you just keep reaching out like you did to post your message! Everyone else has said all the other things I might have said so just emoticon to you!

emoticon emoticon You have taken the first step. Don't be scared. I have found that fear holds me back so I am working at letting that fear go. Make one change, it can be as simple as adding more fruits & veggies to your diet, or setting a calorie goal & staying within that limit. You can do this Lois. We are here for you. Keep pushing yourself forward.

Hi Lois,
Your asking for help and that is the hardest step. The first thing I would do is track what you eat on Spark. And keep a happy journal that you also mark down your walks or exercise. emoticon emoticon

Lois;
There will probably be a lot of ups and downs, but it is nice to have others who have been through the same thing and can encourage you to just keep going. I have been going in the wrong direction lately, but I know that what I'm going through won't last forever and that I will get through this, get my act together, and turn this thing around. Best of luck in your journey!

Hey Lois! SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE... I am a turtle and let me tell ya, I am very slow, but one day at a time! 3 years and 50=+ lbs down but it's better than 50 lbs UP! I will continue to take my time and make at least 1 smart choice a day whether it be picking a piece of fruit over a dessert or walking for just 10, YES, TEN minutes.- Doesn't matter how FAST you go, JUST GO!!!! I can do this and so can YOU. I have faith in you! One step at a time! Hang in!

Hi Lois..... emoticon
I got on my scales yesterday morning and I was back up to 335 so I know what a tragic feeling it was for you. I feel the embarrassment every time and I even told my husband that I was staying in my RV for the rest of my life, but Lois that's just not logical...... It is self preservation to our feelings but if we don't get that little bit of exercise then we will be so much worse off then we are now. I was told one time that each and every person we come into contact with each day has something about themselves that they hate and are insecure about.....
We can do this my NEW friend and know that you are not alone in this.

Leslie .....
Thank you so much for sharing that! emoticon

Hi there and welcome to the team. Take it one day at a time and one step at a time. Do not try to change to much all at once. Focus on one mini goal at a time.

Shrinking Shannon from Michigan

2016 I will hit the gym 6/7 days a week. I will eat more protein, fruits and veggies. I will really cut back on the carbs.

To entertain myself riding on the train and walking on the treadmill, I read magazines about healthy living. I'm going to quote the first paragraph of an article about Dr. Pam Peeke. I found it enlightening.

"'Does your soul really ache for a food fix, or is there something else that will satisfy you?' That's the questions Pamela Peeke, MD, poses to every patient who seeks her out for help in kicking a brutal pattern of emotional overeating. To wrestle this monster to the ground, she say, you have to 'tell your true truth': Take inventory, really look at who you are, and think about what got you into this mess in the first place. Who's in your life? What haunts you? What are your fears? What thought patterns ensnare you in self-destructive habits? 'You can only make long-standing changes,' she says, 'when the pain of where you are is far greater than the pain it will take to get you out.'"

Don't be scared. Be hopeful, determined, and happy.

Hi - my name is Lois. I am 58 years old and I find my weight just creeping up, up, up. As of this morning I weigh 330 - it's the highest I've ever been and I'm terrified. I'm uncomfortable and embarrassed to go to work today. It's hard to walk even a little bit because of the weight and the pain in my knees. I want to lose the weight - I need to lose the weight. So I'm here - hello to all of you emoticon
