Omega 3's have an affect on mood. Here are a couple of good vegan sources:

You can get omega 3's through flax and walnuts but from what I read the omega 3 supplements are better.

Here is an article that talks about mood and omega3's:

Honestly, your change in emotions is most likely related to the fact that your body is detoxing from meat. When letting go of meat and dairy your body goes through emotional as well as physical changes. I was at a raw food detox center in which they told us that this was often the reason for people being highly emotional in the initial phases of the changes to their diet.

B12 is the one vitamin supplement almost everyone agrees Vegans need to take.

I've not eaten meat is a long time other than when I've been out with people and they order pizza with pepperoni. Really I only cut out eggs and dairy. I guess the dairy could have had hormones.

Its really been a lot easier than I thought. Realized that other than adding cheese to things I really had been eating pretty close to vegan already. My little brother is allergic to milk and eggs so I never ate them, or anything with them in them growing up.

Everything I've eaten in the past week: Rice, couscous, beans, tomatoes, Kale, I almost live off of mushrooms and zucchini, oatmeal, crackers, Silk and peanut butter ... short list but my grocery store only has 4 aisles so choices are limited.

I probably should get a vitamin, you saying that reminded me that I probably should go back on the iron suppliment I was taking a few years back and my mom had mentioned B12.

Thanks guys.

In case it is food related, I would recommend looking at a good multi-vitamin if you are not already on one or if you just want to do a single supplement, get a good B-complex vitamin, B vitamins definitely can affect your mood, your energy, and your brain.

Also, what ARE you eating? I think sometimes it's hard on newbies because they haven't learned how to cook for the new diet so it doesn't incorporate the proper foods. And, of course, us women also can't rule out normal monthly fluctuations our hormones go through.

Also, any change creates stress. Depending how big a deal going vegan is to you, it may be a big stressor and will exacerbate any other emotions you are experiencing. Of course, it's a good stressor and with time will fade as vegan choices become the default.

Congratulations on your vegan adventure!!

Just guessing here, so bear with me.

Animals grown for human consumption make natural hormones, They are also often given additional hormones to make them "better" for retail.

Knowing that and knowing that our emotions are influenced by our hormones and lack there of, it might stand to reason that stopping meat and hence stopping the daily consumption of those hormones might alter your moods temporarily.

I would suggest lots of water, some daily exercise (stimulates mood elevating endorphins) and wait it out a few days until your body acclimates to the new you.

I made the switch to vegan about a week ago and have found myself really emotional the past few days. I remember being more emotional right after I decided to go vegetarian and was wondering if any of you experienced things like this.

Is there a reason this might be? Or am I linking two things that might not be related?
