Hi ev1! I'm a type 2 diabetic, & bout 150 lbs over wt! i have neuropathy, all my teeth have "died", i have cataract on my eye, etc, etc, etc....

i've decided i have to start now to take care of what's left of me. i have a hubby 5 children, 2 d-i-l's & 1 on the way, 4 gkids & 4 on the way, & 2 gpuppies.

i just want to explain about my teeth, so ev1 will know how fast & how severe the diabetes complications can be.... May 4, 2011 my 32 yo son Earnest disappeared. my BG # shot up in the 500's b/c of the stress, worry, not eating rite & not exercising. my teeth started getting darker & was turning black, they were getting cracks all along the gum line on the front & back both. they started not just breaking off, but some actually crumbled. some teeth i have a pc of tooth from gum to top on back & nothing on front side except black center. ALL THIS WITHIN A MONTH'S TIME!!!

my BG # are almost always under 200 fasting now, i prob get an hour walk 1ce a wk, but not much more than that. i am studying to be an alternative health specialist & incorporating my learning into my life so now is a perfect time to my eating & fitness on the ball also!

btw, i read down thru this page of posts & just want to say i'm glad to meet u all, & so glad to see so many non-diabetics & border-line diabetics plunging ahead to make sure they don't get it or reverse it if they may. we can do this!!!

ps, this is a pic of my missing son, Earnest Francis from sistersville, wv

NOPE! I'm not diabetic either; just overweight with a Type II father and genetically predispositioned. Also have other family who deals with this and decided it was a great place to find nutrition planning that works for my whole family!

Hi! I joined this team before but didn't complete it. This time I will!! I found out in March that I am diabetic and now have pretty good control over my blood sugar levels. I have brought my A1C level from 8.4 down to 6.1 but I need to do more. My biggest challenge is getting in exercise during the day. I really need to improve on this!!

Hello, I'm not diabetic, but my mother is, so it runs in my family. I've seen what diabetes can do to people and I don't want to ever get to that point. While I know I can't fully control whether diabetes decides to strike, I know that I intend to do everything I can to avoid it!

Hello!!! I'm a 44 yr old Mom from MN, diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 3 yrs ago, but the doctor is suspecting I actually have been pre-diabetic since the birth of my son 22 yrs ago (still trying to lose that baby-weight I gained from being pregnant with him and his sister LOL). For the diabetes, I'm on Metformin twice a day (1000 mg each time). My Mom is also Type 2. I'll be taking a 3 class series from my Doctor entitled 'Managing Diabetes' (why start it when diagnosed? LOL--they just suggested it to me now!! Silly doctors!!!) and I figured an 8-week program will be good way to jump start my weight loss emoticon

I'm ready to make the changes that I know will bring me better health. At least I think I am LOL I will do the best I can!

Hi- I am a diabetic on Metformin, and am 160 pounds over weight. I was gestationally diabetic 8 years ago, and have been fighting the weight battle since.
Earlier this year I started to get sick, and experiance the symptoms of diabetes. After tracking my sugar, I went to see the doctor, and he confirmed it. The goal is to get to a health weight and off the Metformin before this get's worse.

Hi.

I am new to sparkpeople. I am a single mom with 4 boys. 2 of my boys have type one diabetes. I am a borderline diabetic. Just want to say hi and look for support. I weigh over 300 lbs. I have got to loose weight for my health. My husband died of a heart attack in March of 2006. I think I am a stress eater. I have to change. My kids are ages 21, 11, 9, and 7. The boys who have diabetes are the 11 and 9 year old. My 11 year old was diagnosed when he was 6 months old. the 9 year old was diagnosed when he was about 2 weeks shy of his second birth day. It has been hard to deal with. My late husband one of his siblings has type one diabetes and her daughter is also a diabetic type one. emoticon

Hi all, I'm Kathy and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 10 mo ago. I am on meds but I don't take it serious and don't follow any diet. I joined because I have to change and face the fact that I am diabetic and start taking care of myself. I want to lose weight, eat healthy and most of all, feel healthy again!

emoticon Hey everyone! I'm Vickie, 24, from Ohio. My dad was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. He's struggled with it and is now suffering from neuropathy and other issues. I've always been a little overweight, and diabetes has run in the family. But seeing my friends and family suffering from it has really hit home for me. When I've tested my sugar before, it's been a little high. I don't want to get diagnosed, so I'm doing all I can to get healthy and practice healthier habits. Hopefully it's not too late. :) Glad to be a part of this team!

Hello everyone, I was diagnosed as Type 2 about 10 yrs ago. I rebeled....this Ben and Jerrys is the last one, tomorrow I will be serious. Tomorrow finally came about four years ago with Sparkpeople. I lost 52 pounds and got very involved in running a team on here and challenges. I lost track of myself and gained back 30 pounds. :( I am down about 40 right now...but stuck. I have decided to revitalize and reboot with the help of Sparks. Wish me luck!

Hi everyone! I am on the highway to being a diabetic. I choose to get off of the highway 2 wks ago. I stopped daily cappuccino immediately and started learning how to eat to fend off diabetes. In two weeks I have successfully learned that I have lots to learn!

Sparkpeople helped me lose weight in 2006, keep it off thru 2007 and then I let things slide. I am ready to work this, not so much for the weightloss but for the health benefits.

Hi shara,
My names Amy. I've been a type 1 diabetic for about 18 years. I haven't had great control, either. I tend to eat whatever I want. I just figured I'd take extra insulin, but I'm now realizing that taking extra insulin isn't healthy and my body is starting to resist it. That scared me. I have a 20 month old son who means everything to me. He's my motivation to get healthy and get my diabetes under control.
I've gone my whole life, not knowing anyone else with type 1 diabetes. I think it will help me a lot to talk to people who are in the same boat as me.

Hello everyone, I am not a diabetic but my husband is a type 2, he was diagnosed several years ago. At first he was very concerned about his diet and exercise. But now we are both very unhealthy. So I thought I would join this team to maybe get some insight on how to change my lifestyle so he can have a healthier lifestyle.

Hi! I have been type 2 diabetic for five years. I have struggled with different doctors and different meds. But I now have a dr who cares, isn't scared to give me a stern lecture, but also wants to hear my point of view. So I am ready to change my lifestyle. I think I've been half-assing it and now I want to dive in and fix myself. I am a mom of 3 and I work with troubled kids.

Hi Team!
I am new to this team and new to being a diabetic. I am not normally a complainer but I am already losing my control over picks in my fingers. I have heard there is a meter that one does not have to have blood to use. Can any of you give me the name of it or where I can get one. I look forward to getting to know you all. Guess this is one disease that is a lifetime thing so guess I will have lots of time to get acquainted.
God bless you all on your travels.

Hi I am a 64 year old who needs to get healthy like I used to be, before I moved to Florida. I have a family history of diabetes my sugars are starting to go up, not yet high enough to be considered a diabetic and I do not want to get to that point. I'm hoping to get the motivation from this site to complete my task to get healthy for my kids and grandkids.

Hi I am a type 2 diabetic after years of having PCOS and insulin resistance. I need help to know what to eat and how much. Portion size is always a tricky one for me. I need to lose about 50kgs and I am using optifast to kick start weight loss. My blood sugars have been under control but the weight is still there. I have been this weight (120kgs) for 18 years give or take a few kilos up and down and am now thoroughly sick of it! I have been a member of sparks for about 9 months but am just getting into it now. I have trouble motivating myself to exercise so I hope this challenge will be the kick in the butt I neeed.

Hello, I am pre-diabetic, but Type-2 runs heavily in my family and in my race, especially at my age, so I want to learn to eat a diet that will keep me on the positive side of the disease. I especially want to understand the role carbs should play. I know to stay with the complex ones, but what about the low glycemic? And our trackers, do they seem to be kind of heavy on the carbs? It's certainly more than I'm accustomed to eating. I guess I'm suspicious and afraid to indulge because the older I get the more I seem to enjoy carbs.

I will track my meals each day, and exercise each day. And hopefully, lose some weight.

I have been diagnosed with type 2 since October of 2003... I was doing great controlling it until I got complacent with the I can still eat what I want and keep it controlled. Now after a child and not eating correctly I am on insulin plus some. My sugar do great even when I lose 5 or 10 pounds so I HAVE to get busy. I have about 50 lbs or more that I want to lose. I just want to be healthy so I am here for my hubby and my 5 year old son. Good luck to us all!!!

Hello, My name is Cheryl (age 65) and I have had diabetes since 1995. I have been in a rest home in SW Missouri for 5 years. I could barely walk because of Arthritis, and then I fell and broke my femur. Afterwards, I could walk, but my pain level was at 10+ after only a few steps. So I am in a wheel chair. In restorative therapy, I walk enough to make sure I can still go to the bathroom by myself and get into bed. Doing these two things is really a blessing. No waiting on call lights for as long as 1 hr. and 45 minutes. My oldest son, Craig (civpro1) has lost 182 lbs. on SP. He is my mentor. My roommate, Sharon (spunky521) is paralyzed on one side and has still lost 132 lbs. They are the first two on my list of friends if you would like to read their Sparkpage. God Bless You, Cheryl

God is so good.

Hi all. My name is Jaynemarie and I'm 53. Been diabetic since 1995 when my pancreas necrotized. They were only able to save 1/3 of it. Since then I've put on 115 lbs which is reeking havoc with my blood sugar and my health. So, I'm hoping this site will help me loose back to what I should be.

Hello everyone! I'm Patti. I am 50 years old and was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes in 2004. I started working hard 3 months ago to control my sugars (and lose weight) when my A1C climbed to 8.7 and my weight topped out at 304 lbs. and my doc started talking insulin. After that visit, I bought a pedometer to help me track my steps. I could barely walk across a parking lot when I first started and was only logging around 500-700 steps a day. I am currently at 8000 steps per day! My doctor visit yesterday showed that I had lost 8 lbs and lowered my A1C to 6.7. Woohoo!!! A coworker told me about SparkPeople yesterday and I decided to sign up to keep me motivated to cut my weight in half. I am feeling so much better already....I can't wait to know what it feels like to not be overweight.

Hello all!! I started trying to live a healthier lifestyle, exercise and lose weight on 7/27/11. I joined SP yesterday and forgot to introduce myself. I have been a bad diabetic; rarely checking sugars and prior to the above date eating whatever I wanted to eat regardless of the amount of carbs or anything else. I have a lot of weight to lose and and pray that we're all successful in our journeys.

@LADYROCI,

I have PCOS with insulin resistance too - diagnosed in 2003, but had it at least for the last 20 years. The insulin resistance is a tough one to overcome, but luckily, not impossible. The one thing that helped me is to never eat simple carbohydrate (even an apple) by itself. It must always be paired with some protein - Greek yogurt with apple for example. That slows down your insulin from shooting up.

SP nutrition tracker is THE most important thing in addition to regular cardiovascular activity AND strengths training that has helped me lose 12 lbs in the last 6 weeks. It is possible to control PCOS.

One more very important thing - this way of eating has to be a lifestyle change. This isn't something you do for a bit and go back to not doing it. And therefore, a "diet" phrase will only disappoint you more. I am trying to embrace the new way of eating and exercising as a lifestyle change by telling myself I am worth it!

Good luck in your journey - sorry for the unsolicited advice. I empathize with you as a fellow PCOS insulin resistance sufferer.

Hi everyone:) I am a pre-diabetic looking to take control of my lifestyle. My weakness is carb rich foods especially desserts. Doesn't help that I love to bake for my family but have recently cut down on the amount of "bad" foods in the house. If I can help myself, I know that I will be helping my family make better food choices too.

My name is Shara.
I am a type 1 diabetic with poor control due to HORRIBLE food choices.
I know the consequences of this horrible disease and I have so much to live for! I have a wonderful and supportive husband, a 5 year old boy and a 2 year old little girl.
As much as I love my family, it seems that food always wins. I hate myself for not taking care of my health. I am hoping that joining spark people and getting support from the communities will "spark" a change in my life.
Any other Type 1 friends out there?

Hi, I am pre diabetic and I have started my weight loss by exercising two weeks ago to prevent full blown diabetes. I walk 3-4 times a week 3-5 miles. I am a newbie and need the extra motivation.

Hi my name is Jennifer. I am from south Louisiana, where a huge part of our culture is food. So this indeed is a challenge for me. I have been a type 2 diabetic for 16 years now, but I have never stuck to a regular exercise program. Now is the time to make some changes. I am hoping to get to know people with the same struggles as I have, like minded, and offer support and encouragement, as well and receive some. This is indeed a huge lifestyle adjustment for me, and an everyday, every hour struggle. I am fairly new to spark people in general, joined about 2 months ago, but haven't taken the time to get involved with it until now. I am really loving this program and all it has to offer. So here we go, day 1. emoticon

Hi, my name is Paula, I read all the posts before mine, and I think a lot of them could have been written by me....I think we are all in the right place, we all want to do this challenge and I think we all know how very hard this is, or we wouldn't be searching out a another leg up to reach our goals. I like the fact that even though a lot of us struggle with this, and maybe have even been struggling with this for a long time, but yet we have never given up. I am ready for this challenge, and I appreciate the opportunity!!

HI, my name is Lee and I have been on SP for a few years, but have yet to post anything or seriously follow a program. I am back now because I need help badly and have to make some major changes. I recently saw my doctor and my BP was 170/100 and my A1C was 11.6. This the highest my A1C has ever been and I suspect I have also become insulin resistant. Hope this challenge and posting on the boards helps me to stick to it and lose the weight. Thanks!

Hi, my name's Sheila. I own and operate my own truck. I've driven over 20 years and my health shows it. I'm working on reversing 20 odd years of junk food consumption.

My name is Matt. I haven't officially been diagnosed with Diabetes, but I think I might be pre-diabetic. I do know that I have the high risk factors. I quit smoking a few years ago after our first child was born, so that helps. But I need to lose weight and eat better. I'm excited to see an 8-week program with weekly completion lists. I think it will help me stay motivated and see progress.

An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.

My name is Debbie from Texas and I'm prediabetic. I have a family history diabetes and I'm trying to avoid becoming diabetic. I have finally found a good endocrinologist and will be going back to see him about the results of all my other tests in a couple of weeks. I am trying to become healthy and feel better.

Hey Y'all,

I'm Cassie from south Louisiana, where the temps are hot, the food is spicy and the people are friendly!!!!

I'm insulin resistant, and trying to avoid becoming diabetic. Both of my parents were diabetic, and so is my brother. I'm taking steps to avoid it, if possible. I'm looking forward to being part of this group. Hopefully, y'all will help me stay on track!!

I am also pre-T2 and worry that I will get gestational diabetes when I get pregnant (we don't have any children yet) so I'm trying to find some ways to improve my health and develop some "better" habits before I get pregnant. Thanks for the support!
