Running is wonderful but very important to BUILD up to it. The 5K walk/jog training program on Spark is an excellent way to begin....walk quickly to warm minute running and 4 minutes walking; increasing to 90 seconds following by 3 walking and so on. It is ideal for building stamina, muscles, skill and breathing technique. Don't forget to do some yoga and stretching daily...GAIAM TV has a good Yoga for runners program and it is imperative that you stretch regularly especially if you are over 21 :-) this will protect, shin splints, ham strings, ibands and achilles heel from injury.

As someone who loves to run but had a six month hiatus as a result of plantar fasciatis due to over use, not enough yoga/stretching and poor shoes, may I encourage you to visit a proper sports store before you start the 5K challenge who will assess your feet and impact so that you buy the RIGHT shoes for your gait and foot placement. Over and/under pronation can impact injury and the right choice in shoes can be the difference between a lifetime of enjoyment and some misery :-( trust me.......use good cotton or WOOL socks to keep feet in good health and if possible have two pairs of shoes to swap out so they are fresh.

Buy yourself a good quality tracker such as the new little SPARK Activity tracker or FITBIT Force which will track minutes, steps, intensity and in some cases your route. Very kewl to track your statistics...I use NIKERUNNING on my Iphone as well which is fun as it posts to Facebook and I receive cheers of encouragement as well :-) every little bit helps.

I am 56 and still running so I know you can do it and enjoy it too....once you have your first runner's high you will be hooked :-)

As for some quick weight loss and a nutrition boost check our REBOOT with Joe Cross and juice fast.....I love his site and philosophy his move Fat Sick and Nearly Dead was great......the website is full of information and guidance if you choose to do it....always check with your Doctor first :-)

Good luck and stay safe out there....

Hi, My name is Dale. I have lost 40 pounds and I seem stuck. I'm hoping that kicking it up a notch will start the scales moving again. I've never been a runner and I'm not sure if my knees will hold up but I'm going to try.
