Hey there everyone! I've always dreamed of being a runner and thought that the 5K Walking program would be a great place to start. I've never entered a race before, but I would love begin taking part in them. I hope that I fall in love with walking and running and that it helps me to remain on track with all my health goals.

Hello everyone! Okay.. I think I just shocked myself.. This is my VERY FIRST 5k training.. never been in any run or walk a thon/marathon.. I just took a deep breath after I clicked "join 5k" button But I have to admit I am VERY excited and very nervous...but if I don't do this.. I'd never face my goals! Right? :) Anyway.. Can anyone tell me how does this work? And where is 5k? Locations? if anyone can be kind to help.. It'd be great. Thank you so MUCH!

Hi All! I just joined this challenge and it is the first one I have done since joining SP. Not sure what to expect or how it works but I guess I will learn. I am now 4 months into my new healthy lifestyle and finally beginning to see results. I started exercising with a Tony Little Glider because of the pain in my knees but now am able to go to the Y daily and use the treadmill for at least 30 minutes a day. I am hoping this challenge will further motivate me.

emoticon Hi, everyone! My name is Debbie and I just joined this challenge this past week. Today, I completed Day 3 of the training and am feeling a sense of gratification that I was able to get back home intact. I really had to push through today... And even though I wasn't quite sure I'd be able to do this, I'm grateful for this challenge.

Thank you for the motivation, SP...

Hi,

I just started this challenge today, and completed day 1 with 0.7 miles, not much but it is a start.

I also have osteo arthritis -- which is limiting the fitness I can do... I would like to start with this and work my way up to jogging/running!

Good Luck to all!

Hi all, I actually joined on Tuesday and started training on Wednesday, I am just bad at remembering to post an intro. I did post that I have signed up for the 5K virtual Trick or Trot race, very excited for that challenge and getting more activity! I teach a water aerobics class 3x a week, take a belly dance class 2x a week and love Wii Fit! I just need to have a "push me" challenge.

I look forward to racing with everyone! emoticon

Hi I just signed up for the 5 K virtual walk. I started the training process today. It sounded like a fun thing to do. I have been walking for quite a while now and regularly walk for 2 miles.

Hi, my name is Christy and I'm from MI. Last spring my doctor told me that I needed to exercise and suggested a local 5K and some training web sites. I convinced my sister to join me for the walk and off we went. We survived the walk and were anxious to try other races, to see if we could improve our times. We have walked in at least one other race and had a good time. Now I'm anxious to try the virtual race.

Well, here goes. I have led a very sedentary life until now. I walk 3-4 days a week. Usually a mile +/- but I have a long way to go. I would love to do 5K so if there is a training plan, I would love to get it.

I am 76yo and been in SP since April. I joined a fitness club last week. My insurance provider pays for a Silver and Fit membership. the trainer had me get on the treadmill and elliptical and within 4 minutes, my legs gave out. UGH. Gotta get to work on this problem. I am sick and tired of not being able to get up from the floor. When I do get down to the floor, I look around to see if there is anything I can do while I am there

May 2010, I did a Half Marathon, it about did me in. This May my 10yo grand daughter & I did a 5k trail walk & this Sunday my DIL, the 10yo, 6yo, 6mo & myself were supposed to be doing another one.....the flooding here in PA canceled that. When the 10yo heard that one of my coworkers is doing a 100k she decided that is going to be her goal, so I'm going to train for a 10k & see if she wants to try it too.
My starting weight was 265 & I got down to 192, I'm back up to 219 & know I have to get the weight off for my knees to survive. I want to do active things with my 4 granddaughters & not be remembered sitting at home in my rocking chair.
Today we had a break in the rain so I push mowed the lawn for an hour instead of the walk I had planned. I'm exhausted! Debi

Hi everyone! Well, I dislike walking and avoid it for exercise. Even after my knee replacement, I rode the recumbent bike instead of walking. So, now I need something to wake my body up and do something new and this is it. I'll be doing the Virtual 5K

I've been wanting to do a 5k for a while, but I never knew how to train for one, and I'm not really down with paying fees to be apart of one.... I'll be doing the trick or trot virtual 5k... I dont know why I never thought about doing a 5k on my own... So needless to say I'm super excited to be a part of this team!!!

Hey from Laurel in Washington (state)! I have never done a 5k before in any way. I am way out of shape and my back hurts. BUT this time around I am not going to give up, By the end of October, I will be walking my first 5k. Maybe (hopefully) I will lose a few pounds on the way there! And for sure this training (walking) is going to help my glucose levels. It is a win/win for me all around!

Hey from SC! I've entered this program to 1. get back on track & 2. see if I can do it. I have congenital back issues which leave me in constant pain. I've been managing the pain with meds, meditation & relaxation techniques. I had 4 major surgeries over a 2 yr. period so my core needs work (understatement . emoticon ). As with everyone there are good day & not so good days. The past month has had more tough days so, I push a little, & see what I can do emoticon

Hello! My name is Cres from Philippines. I used to walked most of the time here for 60 minutes. Some times 3-4 times a week. This is why I join this because it gives me an insight to fight hehehe, I mean challenge for myself that I need to do it because of this thread of walked hehehe. I really have fun to do my walked. Some times I walked to 6-10 kilometers, I do not know how many in miles that is. Once I walked 12 kilometers.

In my country we are using kilometers not miles. But I learn how to convert from kilometer to a mile now. Lets do it, I also know the proper form of walking. I been practicing this for many months now. Because my hubby called me, I walked like a duck hahaha but now not anymore.

Hi. I'm Marla from Ohio. I just signed up for the Trick Or Treat Race. I'll be walking. I walked back in 1993 & lost 75 lbs. just by walking alone. I know this can be done. I just needed something to jump start me again & I found it! So glad Spark started this! I'm a dialysis patient, diabetic with thyroid issues. I had a knee replacement & suffer from leg pain & back pain. I know this will be tough at first but I will get stronger as I go. Need to get healthier to be in the best shape ever for a future kidney transplant. Glad I found you!

Hi, I'm Sara, and have just signed up for the Trick or Treat Race. I have not done anything like this before, but I do enjoy walking and used to do alot of it before my sciatic/low back injury over a year ago. I am still off work , but am planning on going back PT soon.
I need to fit into my uniform, so thought this would give me a jump start to that goal. I have been walking each week since the beginning of June, so feel I am ready for this challenge.

Good luck everyone in your training.

Walking is something that is not only allowed for me but encouraged -- so here I go.

I had back problems for some time - pain in the back and pain/numbness going down my right side to my toes and, before I had epidurals, even on the left side some times. I tried chiropractic, then PT, finally epidurals from 2007 through last fall. In 2008, I was told I needed surgery --fusion, not just a laminectomy. The epidurals helped and lasted longer than most seem to but I realized I was helping them last by doing nothing to set the pain going - I was doing almost nothing and steadily gaining weight and knew that the shots would not cure anything - so I went ahead for the surgery.

I had fusion (L4-L5 with rods and screws) on August 9 and from the 10th - 17th spent a week at a skilled nursing facility. I was walking the morning after, while in the hospital and started PT on the 11th. I had daily PT while in the convalescent center and walked the corridors - I have been walking up and down my street and through the supermarket.

I'm feeling great - have had no pain, just soreness - and a bit of an ache in the mornings. I felt fine... I'm doing outpatient PT twice a week, I go back to work on September 19 and my 2nd post op appointment on October 3.

Hi, everybody! I just signed up the Trick or Treat Trot also! I used to run 5k's all the time but this time I am WALKING. Knees are getting older and I have put too much weight on to subject them to running until I lose about 30 lbs! :)

I am Leah, living in Belgium. I had a precious baby boy 6 weeks ago, so now it is time to get in shape! My main form of exercise is walking, so I am excited to have a goal to work towards...

Hello everyone! I'm Shauna and I've recently signed up for the American Heart Association 5K Heart Walk. The walk is Nov 5th and I have to be ready for it. I'm no good at asking for donations...(hint hint!)...But I know that just showing up and walking for the cause will draw attention and support!! So to get ready, and amp up my weightloss program, I have joined the 5K your way!

I am one of those people who HATES exercise, but wants to lose weight and be healthy....I know I can't have the cake and eat it too!! I really want to be an active person, I imagine what it's like to "enjoy" life. I see myself doing active things like bycling and hiking and playing with my kids for more than 10 minutes! I have never been an active person, and as I've gotten older, the "I don't exercise" mentality is taking it's toll and I am not "enjoying" life (unless I'm eating something yummy!). I don't want to throw in the towl just yet! But, like so many others, I need support and motivation. So here I am. Training with a purpose and hoping to build some good habits in the process! :)

Hi team - my name is Joyce. I have been on Spark People for a few months now and loving it. I have decided as part of my exercise routine I would join this team as I will be doing a 6k walk in December. Never ever entered a race before. So looking forward to it.

I have joined this team for a 5K and then a 10k, on my way to these races I have decided to join the Relay for Life walk with my daughter:

I am posting this because I registered online for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This is my first year with Relay for Life and I need your help reaching my fundraising goal.
When I registered online, I was issued my own personal fundraising web page. It explains what Relay For Life is and why I chose to get involved. My web page also has my fundraising goal and how much money I’ve raised so far.
Please visit my page, and while you’re there....why not make a donation to the American Cancer Society?

Your donation will help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. The amount you donate will count towards my fundraising goal.
If you would like to make a donation for a Luminaire Bag in the name of someone or in memory of someone, the donation is a minimum of $10.00. A Luminaire Bag is a bag you can put a message on such as “In Memory of _ _ _ _ “, “Thinking of You _ _ _ _ “, “In Support of_ _ _ _ “ or anything you would like. A candle will be placed in the Luminaire and at dusk the Luminaires will line the track and the candles will be lit. It is so pretty. If you would like a Luminaire, make your donation and send me a message so that I can make sure it is done in time for the walk.
REMEMBER, CANCER HAS NO BOUNDRAIES AND IS NOT PREJUDICE. IT CAN STRIKE ANYONE AT ANY TIME. WITHOUT YOUR HELP AND DONATIONS A CURE CANNOT BE FOUND. I KNOW WE ARE ALL IN A TIME OF NEED. BUT THINK OF ALL THOSE WHO MAY NOT SEE TOMORROW BECAUSE A CURE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND. MINIMUM DONATIONS ARE $5.00, BUT THAT MAY MEAN A LIFETIME TO SOMEONE WHO HAS THIS AWFUL DISEASE. HELP TO CELEBRATE MANY MORE BIRTHDAYS FOR ALL.
Thank you so much for your help - I will keep you updated on my progress!

Hi, I'm new to the team. My name is Erin, I'm 38 years old and somewhat out of shape, but I've decided the walking program would be a great start to forming new, healthier habits before my first grandchild arrives in January.

The last time I tried to start a similar program to this one, it didn't turn out well...I broke my ankle on a training walk. Let's hope that doesn't happen again! emoticon

Once I finish the walking program, I hope to move on to the walking/running program and move up from there through each of the programs, until I can actually run my first whole 5K by myself!

Pleased to meet everyone...wish me luck! I'll be your cheerleader if you'll be mine! emoticon
