Hi-- I am new here. I have had problems with my left knee for years, but I could not get my physician to take me seriously. He said I had a twisted knee cap and gave me exercises to do, which were no help at all. He refused to send me to an orthopedist because he was sure it was not arthritis. I finally got him to listen to me and he sent me to a pain management doctor, who sent me for an x-ray and physical therapy. And guess what? Yes, it is arthritis and I also have bone spurs. I am glad that I finally know exactly what's wrong with it and that I am not just a chronic complainer. So after wasting so much time (and money on co-pays), I was sent to an orthopedist. He gave me a cortisone shot on Monday, which hasn't helped yet, but I'm hopeful for the first time in years!

HI. I've had a time away from Sparkpeople.

In the last 4 years I've had the second arthroscopy in my left knee, 2 metal rods inserted into each of my big toes to stop the joint moving and relieve pain, and a new left hip. I was fairly fit because I have swum a lot all my life so I worked very hard to get my mobility back each time.
Last year was hard emotionally though: My Mum died, my youngest daughter left home, and I retired, largely because of the arthritis.
So I found myself on my own a lot, and it really doesn't suit me.
Although I kept walking, I have 2 dogs so I have to, I stopped swimming and I wasn't doing any toning exercises. I was also drinking too much and eating far too many nuts and a lot of chocolate. So I put on weight and everything went south.
My daughters are at home because of the Corona virus, which is tough for them, ut lovely for me. So I've got my mojo back a bit.
So, I'm tracking my food again and doing daily toning exercises as well as the dog walking.
We can't pop in and out of the shops any more so I'm planning menus and not bringing the things I eat and drink for comfort back home.
It looks like we could be stuck here for a while, so I'm going to do my best to lose that weight, improve my muscle tone, and find some flexibility again. I'm having to modify quite a lot of the exercises, but at least I'm doing them!
Stay safe everyone.
Let's try to turn this thing into a chance for positive change.

Hi, my name is Jean and I have arthritis in my knees and hands. Recently also starting to have some trouble with my hips. I am very over wt. and want to get it off. I know loosing the wt. will help my joints as well as my diabetes. Some days are good and I can do low impact exercises, other days it's chair cardio or just stretching. So far since starting back on Sparks people in Aug. I lost 15 lbs. I slacked off during the holidays but am serious about getting back on track.

Hi. I am new to the group and new to arthritis. I was diagnosed yesterday. I have had trouble off and on for years with my knees but the pain always went away. This time it didn't and it was the worst pain I have ever had. Doc feels I am bone on bone, waiting for xrays to confirm. He is referring me to PT to start with to try to strengthen the knees. I'm happy to be in this group for support. Need to lose 20 lbs. (Not a good thing this time of year) LOL

I was recently diagnosed with arthritis in both hips. The doctor was not very helpful in what I can do for the pain. Since I can not take anti-inflammatory medications, he said try heat or cold and Tylenol. My worst pain in muscle spasms in my thighs especially after I have been sitting in our truck driving for several hours when we travel from Denver to Grand Junction at least once or twice a month. It is a four hour trip which we try to stop half way to walk but that is a two hour time frame of sitting. The spasms are worse in the morning when I get up too. Are spasms a normal part of arthritis? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
My first day and I am motivated...there is lots to do on Spark People and I am looking for support..have osteoarthritis in my lower back and hands and I have disc degenerative disease. I am still hopeful that through physical therapy and losing some weight, all my efforts will help my condition. I walked for 30 minutes today..have a treadclimber and set it at a slow and steady pace. Felt good. Just glad to be here and I am glad to know this team exists.

Hi, im new to this forum. Im also still learning how to post to the message boards. I have osteoarthritis and have had bilateral knee surgery in 2010. Needless to say its not easy to be on my knees. My range of motion is good. My fingers are showing some build up in the first knuckle. Some soreness there at times.

I want to get back on track and lose about 35 pounds.

Looking forward to meeting some folks here.

Good morning!

I'm LInda, new to this group. I have arthritis in my back and I found out last year I have severe arthritis in both knees and I will need both knees replaces with in a year. It has really limited my mobility. I did join the ymca a few months ago and I'm seeing a personal trainer.
I'm married (30 years in October) have 2 wonderful grown sons, have a dong named Poncho, he is a rescue and adorable!!
I'm a head cook in an elementary school, so I get some time off of work...the best part! I'm 53 but hopefully in 5 years I can retire, I'm so tired of working in school district.
I love camping, hiking, riding my bike, swimming, reading, watching British comedies.

Nice to meet you all!!

Hi! It has been a while since being on Spark. I am
51. It’s been less than a year since being diagnosed with OA. The main area that gives me the most challenges is in the lumbar region. Diagnosed with stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and sacroiliac joint disorder. I’ve tried for over 20 years to lose weight. After researching how to get relief for this back pain, I kept seeing that getting the weight off was a big factor. So motivated by pain, I’ve lost 46 pounds since December. I’m looking to keep it off and loose the remaining 10-15 pounds. trying to exercise now even though I have pain, and trying to make life changes. I’m looking forward to getting and finishing stronger. I’m putting off surgery as long as possible.

Let's do it!

karen

Hi, I am new to the team. Hoping to find help coping with this arthritis. For the last few weeks all my joints have been inflamed. Couldn't move one of my shoulders for a few days. The pain was so bad. I have been with Sparkpeople on and off since 09, But have been gone for about 4 yrs. due to the illness and the death of my son in 2015. I decide this year that I was going to get my Diabetes under control and get my weight off, that 2018 is a new year. So on 1-1-18 I decided it is time for a new me. I thought with weight loss my pain would ease, but it has gotten worse, especially my back. Trying to avoid steroids, because it runs my sugar up.

Hello :) I look forward to getting and giving support. My goal is to improve and/or slow down my medical conditions. I am dealing with fibromyalgia, arthritis, neuropathy, migraines, type 2 diabetes, depression, fatigue, and sleep apnea. I am scheduled to see a neurologist. My primary care physician believes I have multiple sclerosis as well.

Hi, I'm here on my ... I'm not sure how many trip to Spark people. Over the years I've been a member at various times and so far lost just over 30kgs with a long way to go. Very pleased that I'm at my lowest for 15 years though even if it is just the "start". I also know that while I'm dealing with a number of medical issues, I'm much better off for having begun to get healthier and that everything i'm dealing with will also continue to be helped by further weight loss and further focusing on living healthier and a better life. Right now I'm focusing on a personal eight week lose 5% challenge as a kick off to return to a healthier life; and glad to be here as well. I'm in my mid-40's, Australian, single and work part time in a job I enjoy. I'm currently restricted by not being able to do much in the way of exercise but I hope that will change soon. Meanwhile I know my eating habits need a lot of work so that's a good place to focus, and my emotions/stress/etc. etc. etc. Look forward to meeting people here and encouraging one another. I have been diagnosed with OA in my hips and neck, and my physiotherapist is fairly sure in my knees as well (along with who knows how many other areas)

One step at a time we can do it!

Hi everyone. I'm not new to Sparkpeople but have not signed on in 3 years which is terrible considering that I was diagnosed with OA in both my hips at that time. I have a bone cyst and shredded labrum in the left, OA in right. I should have got serious and set about losing the 90 lbs gained since my hips started giving my trouble about 11 years ago, but no. I weigh exactly the same as I did at diagnosis, if not a couple pounds more. I am in the planning stages of getting a TLHR and have a meeting with a surgeon next week. So time to figure out how to lose weight when exercise that I like (hiking) is no longer possible. I also have OA in my neck and lumbar, pelvis and probably my fingers. Cheers everyone!

Hi. I am a very active, still working 63 year old woman with degenerative disc disease and also arthritis in my knees. I have been working out ("slogging," HIIT, weight training, gardening and cycling) for at least 12 years now. I am having trouble with weight gain, and a more importantly body fat ratio gain in the last 6 months. I have so much trouble now with my joints that it is hard for me to do the activities I am used to doing. I have a horrible time when I have been sitting, (in the car, at my desk at work or just relaxing while visiting with friends) with my hip and knees becoming so stiff it is hard to walk. It is becoming more and more difficult for me to do my workouts, or even to go for a walk. I am no longer able to walk at my normal pace. I know some of this is just due to age, but I don't want to put on weight just because I am not able to move like I used to be able to. Does any one else in my age group have similar problems or concern? I would like to hear from anyone else that may be going through similar prolems.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this group, so thought I'd say "Hi". I have severe OA in both knees, as well as in my feet, but the one knee has totally gone kaput. Have had 2 scopes in the past 5 months as at first I tore my meniscus, and then needed the next one when my knee locked up. I'm looking at a knee replacement in the not too distant future as it's bone on bone now and the knee is binding and causing a lot of pain. I also have a ton of weight to lose (100 lbs.) which I know would help big time. My hip is now hurting as I've been limping for so long. It's been too easy to pack on the pounds as I started doing less and less activity as the pain increased. Anyone in a similar boat, and if so, what exercises have you been able to do to build up the muscles without causing ridiculous pain? I know water exercises are good, but I can't get to a local pool for classes as I commute a long way to work and can't get home in time. Any other types of exercise that you've found that work? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Hi I am Bonnie from central KY. "Uncle Art moved in officially 2 years ago on my knee. He has been in my back but the doctor didn't say for sure that he was there. Anyway I refuse to let him win and make sit more then I do now. He is slowly taking away my walking since I can't walk like I used to.

hi
my name is Katharine ,its easier to all me kat.

I think I was dragged to hell and back . I finally found a great doctor this very month .
I had swollen wrist and a blood test for RA was taken back in Dec of 2016.
then I was sent to a orth Dr .he felt I had nerve problems . Oh and then it happen I woke up to the unreal Pain and swollen fingers both hands . My orth Dr wouldnt listen to me ,he decided I was to have a EGM test.

a pt Dr told me to go see a arthritis Dr
over 4 weeks later did i get help .
When I seen the arthritis Dr after the exam . he said I had the sausage fingers also know as
dactylitis. I will go back next week for the lab work . and x-rays
I was so relieved for the shot and meds . I feel better . still have some swollen issues with my right hand

HI, just joined this team - have had total knee replacement, and because of that my hip is hurting. Was told that this is quite normal for people who have had knee replacements. It is your body adjusting to the new way of walking.
I am presently working my way back up to walking 8-10 km a day. A friend (who also had knee replacement) and I walk 3 - 4 x a week right now. We are looking into joining an aquafit class on the days we don't walk.
Can't wait to meet you all thru this team.

Hello, I'm Kim from Las Vegas. I'm 57 and have been with SP many years. I was recently diagnosed with OA in my feet. (I feel it mostly on the top of my feet.) This has made it most difficult to do my daily walking and dancing. I had a small bout of depression for the last two months of the year, which I allowed to mess up my eating.(and gain back weight) I have shaken it off and gotten back on plan food wise, but I'm finding it difficult to do my two favorite exercises, walking and dancing.

I'm glad to have found this team and look forward to making new friends and learning to manage my new speed bump.

New to the team from northern MN. Struggling with osteo in many joints... 2 new hips and a new shoulder in the past 18 months. I need your help with finding exercises that will work for me. I'm doing "starter" Silver Fit classes 2X a week, at the level I can handle it. Doing recumbent bike another 4-5 days a week. My ? is: after recumbent bike, I seem to have med grade pain in the newest hip. Normal? It's been 4 months since that one was replaced. emoticon

I was just recently diagnosed with OsteoArthritis. just thankful it wasn't RA like my mom has. Worse in 2 fingers but just told by my chiropractor that is the cause of discomfort I have been dealing with in my shoulders to neck for the last year. That and having a military neck (I see him 2x week now)

I am open to any ideas to help manage this so that is why I joined this group. That and losing a few pounds.

I'm not new to SP but am new to this group. I'm having a terrible time with my legs, especially my left leg. X-rays say I have minor arthritis but if that is "minor", I'd hate to see what "major" arthritis is.

I'm hoping that once I lose weight, it will help me a lot. I'm also starting to use a cardio-glide machine to see if it will stretch my legs out.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Susan

New here, used Sparks to get my life back a while back...time to do it again and wrangle in the craziness my new married life has brought. My schedule is wicked crazy (so is my pain).. Not eating regularly, structured exercising, or sleeping well. So accountability outside myself is essential. My husband is supper healthy and 10 years younger and I keep up with him most if the time, just hate when I have to take a day off because my life is not structured

Welcome all you Newbies. SparkPeople is a great resource for people wanting to get healthier. I started almost a year ago with tracking all my food and 10 minutes of fitness per day. As for painful joints my doctor told me to ice them for 15-20 minutes twice a day. This really helps. I also drink green smoothies that help fight inflammation and pain.

Hi I am new to this team but not to Spark. I am facing problems trying to find exercises I can do with my bad knees. I am probably have a full knee replacement sometime next spring and my other knee is not far behind. I have given up stairs as they are too painful. I have been trying to lose weight for years and I'd really like to be able to exercise more for losing the weight as well as helping with the arthritis. I always love those commercials that say "all you have to do is walk". Not so easy for everyone.

Hi I'm new to this group and to my arthritis diagnosis. My name is Haley and I am 31 years old. In my mind I am way too young to be having all of the issues I do but I have learned to have a positive outlook on everything life has to throw at me. I have Anklosing Spondilitis and a Subchondral cyst so I am in the beginning stages of Osteoarthritis in my wrist. At least we know what is causing my back, hip and wrist pain. Additionally I recently had surgery for a short Achilles tendon (which was VERY small also) and Plantar Fasciiatis. I will be having surgery on the other Achilles tendon late next year. I gained a lot of weight due to inactivity and pain before my arthritis diagnosis. Before my surgery I actually managed to lose 20 lbs but I am sure that I have gained that back. I am currently unable to go to the gym and it rains too much this time of year here for me to want to go outside. What do you do to help keep you active? I think I will be switching gyms after I am able to walk and/or swim so I can use a pool. Have you all tried swimming and has it been effective for you?

Thank you and it is so nice there is a community of people here to support each other.

Hi, I'm Lori. I have OA in both knees. Glad to have found this team! I started back in October with 112 pounds to lose. It was getting to the point where I could barely walk a couple of blocks without intense knee pain, and my dog was not happy about that! I've lost 58 of those pounds so far and getting around, while not pain free, is much, much easier!

Hello

I'm 26 years old and have OA in both knees and am currently undergoing Supartz injections. Today I had series 4 out of 5 shots and my last shots are next week. I've had issues with my knees since I shattered my left femur when I was 6 years old. I've had surgery on the left knee (lateral release), but never got around to doing the right knee (paying dearly for it). I've been seeing Drs and specialists for as long as I can remember and I've worn every brace there is accept OA braces which I want to invest in since I would like to become active again. I would like to play sports and such as I'm young and have a lot left in me.

I would like to lose 50lbs and return back to military weight and I'm looking forward to learning from everyone.

Ciao for now

Hi, I'm 67 and recently had surgery on my right foot - bunion initially, but when he went in, he found a torn tendon, which he fixed, but I'm taking a long time to recover. Before I went in, I tried to use crutches and found I couldn't put any weight on my left leg. Went to dr, actually a PA and diagnosed as bursitis and gave me a dose of prednisone. Worked like a charm but now I'm starting to walk again, it has come back. Went to a dr this time and he looked at xray and said I have osteoarthritis of the hips. Ugh. On anti-inflammatory now and if it's helping, it must hurt a lot without it.

Anyway, I'm here - need to lose about 40 lbs. Looking forward to learning much!

Hi,
I have recently been diagnosed with a Meniscus Tear/some arthritis in my left knee. I injured my knee during our relocating to a smaller city. Through x-rays/a MRI the tear/arthritis was found. I am in a lot of pain most days; was given a shot to ease the pain. My doctor is recommending surgery to repair the tear. I know that losing some weight would help as well, with taking some pressure off my knee. This team seems like a great place to connect with others that are dealing with similar issues. Looking forward to being a part of this team.

I am 44 and have had traumatic injury to each of my knees that brought on arthritis at an early age. I had 2 orthopedic consults. One said I need a knee replacement but I'm too young and too overweight. So now I'm journeying into the world of alternative medicine to see what they have to offer. Since the doctors refuse to help, I will help myself.

WOW BECWAL! Great job with the weight loss! I'm hoping to do the same to decrease my pain level. I will turn 58 tomorrow and am trying to avoid the pain pills, too, so we have things in common. I wish you much success with the rheumatologist. Welcome to this team and to SparkPeople! You will find many great tools, lots of information (even about arthritis) and lots of sweet, supportive people here. Have a great week!

Hi, my name is Becky and I'm new to Spark People. I'm glad I found it, it has already helped me a lot. I am dieting, started Dec. 1, 2014 at 290 and today 226 but I I have a long ways to go. I am 57 years old, and I was told I have osteoarthritis a few years ago, and just a few days ago I tested positive for RA. Needless to say I feel really sad about it. The reason I wanted to lose the weight is so I'll feel better, but now it's just damage control. I have tons to learn about my new disease. I'm already eating an anti-inflammatory diet, and so far only ibuprofen for pain. I go to a rheumatologist next week to find out how bad the damage is and treatments. Thanks for listening.

He longed to become Real, to know what it felt like; and yet the idea of growing shabby and losing his eyes and whiskers was rather sad. He wished that he could become it without these.

Hi everyone! I'm Carolyn - 44 yr old mom of 3 - married 25 years. I have degenerative disk disease of the spine AND arthritis in areas of the back as well. Looking for encouragement - especially on those days when it's literally too hard to even get out of bed! Some days I'm late for work because I can't move as smoothly - other days I'm ok and get to work on time.

~ Carolyn
