I am trying to get an 18 year old, a 22 year old (mentally handicapped with a 6 - 8 year old mind set) and their 54 year old father to put things back where they got them. I am not having much luck so if you find something that works, please share.

Yes you can!

NMWELSH, be sure to check back in and let us know how it's going. I'm always looking for new tips on how to declutter, so if you happen upon anything that you find helpful, please let us know!

Jen took the words right out of my 'fingers' LOL - the flylady method of setting a timer for 15 minutes works for me - its amazing what you can accomplish in 15 minutes!! And don't forget, there is a bigger advantage to an organized, decluttered home than just how it looks - if you have a place for everything and return it to its place when you are done using it, you can FIND things!! Its a beautiful thing!!

I'm a big fan of Flylady.net - one of the suggestions on that website is to set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes, put on some fun music, and tell the kids it's a "race" to see who can get their room clean first. Once the timer goes off, the cleaning stops, and a winner is declared. Then, do some kind of fun "celebration" for the winner. Once the kids get used to cleaning in small chunks of time on a regular basis, then it becomes a routine.

leading by example and lots of positive reinforcement.

alot of it depends on how old your kids are. I used to "impound" toys etc and they had to earn them back. anything I had to pick up after asking them to do it themselves, got impounded.

I guess lead by example, if you make it a family activity to tidy up with a board and tasks it might help

2014. Has. Got. To. Be. Better!

My body, mind and house are all cluttered. Stress is quite literally killing me. My only outlet is volleyball, and at this point, my body is hating me for it because I need to lose weight to alleviate the stress on my joints. I refuse to give in. My devoted and wonderful husband is getting upset with the "clutter" around the house, and I don't need stress in the one area of my life that doesn't have it- my marriage!

My children are horrible at keeping up their rooms, but they don't have a good example to learn by...

Any suggestions for resetting a child's learned response to chores and room maintenance?

Thanks!
