Hi everyone ! Just getting back into Spark after not using it for a very long time !

So I am a substitute teacher, not quite as hard-working as all of you amazing people, but I do work almost every day. This is my second career after retiring from the military, and I love what I do, although I had no idea how busy it would be ! I enjoy learning from how different teachers do things in their classes, to help me be better at what I do ! Also a Cub Scout leader/Sunday School teacher in my free time- so really being around kids is just what I do!

Hi All! I'm from Texas and am in my fifth year of teaching. I spent my first three in 4th grade, and am currently in 3rd. I teach math, science and social studies. :) One day I'd like to be back in 4th grade, or even 5th!

HI everyone! I just joined Spark yesterday. I was a member years and years ago, and now I'm back!!

I was an elementary school special education teacher for 10 years in San Francisco. 2 Years ago, I took my dog and left to teach at an international school in Sri Lanka. I accumulated another dog, and now the three of us live in Latvia, where I just started working as a special ed teacher.

Somewhere along the line, I gained back all the weight I'd lost before. I know that I can't do this alone. There aren't a lot of options for in-person support systems around losing weight here in Latvia, so I decided to come back to Spark.

Hi everyone. I'm a librarian in Nebraska. I worked in the archives for the public schools but never completed my teaching license so I can't teach K-12, but I am an online MOOC teaching assistant and an online adjunct professor. This past October I turned 30 and realized I needed to make a change in my life. I hated myself, my life was going nowhere, and I weighed the same as my husband - who has several dangerous weight related conditions that the doctors say could kill him. I was starting to exhibit symptoms that could only be explained by my weight and I just couldn't allow my weight to be why I was sick and continue preventing me from the life I wanted. I had close to 200lbs to lose, and I am around 80lbs from my goal now.

My name is Stephanie. I am a Spanish teacher in Eastern West Virginia. I am about to start my 10th year of teaching. I have been with Spark people on and off since May of 2009. This is my second profile that I have joined the group with I have been back seriously since May 13th. Our insurance is now charging for being unhealthy. I have worked hard at it and lost 15lbs to date. My goal is by this time next year to loose a 126 lbs. It has been in some ways this has been the best and worst year of my life. In April of 2016, I accepted what was to be my dream job, it turned into a nightmare. To escape the nightmare, I took a job that I had been sure I wouldn't want, It has turned into my dream job. Looking to continue my happiness, all support appreciated.

Hi, I'm Sharon,

I recently turned 60. I am overweight, pre-diabetic and have high blood pressure. These are both things that diet and exercise can help. I'm not getting any younger. My 2 grandchildren 2 and 3.5 are hard to keep up with when we're together, Hoping to improve that too.

I have been teaching 4th grade for 23 years. I'm not ready to retire yet. I like Science Fiction and light mysteries. I love doing crafts, My current favorite is making cards,

Thank you in advance for the support I now Sparkers give to others.

You don't stop laughing. because you grow old, you grow old. because you stop laughing!

Hello, Teachers! I have taught music in a mixture of areas from school bands, choirs, and general music, and now in private music lessons full time. I have three children - one currently doing her student teaching, another in college for business, and one in high school. I was on SparkPeople a handful of years ago lost much weight, but then life got really hard resulting in my stopping and gaining it all back plus a few more. I'm trying to get my life back now and starting fighting the weight with dieting and exercising in December losing about 22 pounds. I really need inspiration and support and remembered how much I enjoyed SparkPeople when I was here before.

:) I look forward to meeting you and hearing your stories.

Hi my name is Melanie. I'm the mother of a 19 year old daughter and a 30 year old stepson. I work in a high school special education classroom where the children have various disabilities. Spark people has taught me that changing your lifestyle helps keep the weight off instead of just dieting. I've been trying by myself for years with no progress to show for it. Started Sparkpeople in 2011 and left for several years as my life was a mess. Now I'm back and ready to do this.

Hey! Not sure this is going to post to the right spot but figured I'd try introducing myself. I am a high school math teacher currently but may be switching to physics come fall depending on our admin and what is needed. THAT should be phun...Maybe. I am 29 and completing my 3rd year under contract although 4 years in the classroom (I was a long term sub when I started). I work out with my mother who is also a high school teacher and I know we've been helping each other stay on track. I'm glad to see there are more teachers out there doing the same!

Hello! Hello! I am new to the group. I am seeking balance. This is my second year back in the classroom, after a decade break. I am in training programs for more teacher certification, for both elementary education and fitness instructor education. I am also a mom and wife. I have lost balance. Oh man. This is so much harder than I imagined. But, here I am. Trying.

Hi, I'm a newly retired elementary teacher from Illinois. I got my Early Childhood degree while I was working as a teacher para-pro in a local public school and raising my family. I then taught first grade for 11 years, and then second grade for the rest of my career.
I always say that the best lessons I ever learned about teaching were from BEING a teacher. I really felt unprepared when I got my first classroom. Today my district has a paid stipend for teacher mentors to help new teachers. So glad for that!

My name is Jessi, and I am currently in college to get my BS in early childhood education. I am in my 30's, so I'm a non-traditional college student. I know the important influence teachers make on the children in their community, especially those in their classroom. That is why I am working to be a better role model for them. I want to be an example of a happy, healthy, active lifestyle. However, I can't do that if I'm immobilized by the aches and pains of fibro. Wishing everyone success on this journey.

Hi everyone! My name is Connie and I teach math in a small rural Western PA high school. I have been teaching for 21 years 17 of them where I am currently at. In the past, I have taught basic general math to the 7th graders, low level algebra to 9th graders, and statistics for jr and Sr. This year the admin has switched the whole depart around. I am going to teach algebra 3, calculus, statistics, and SAT prep. So you can imagine what I spent my summer doing!

A little about myself...I am married to a great guy and we just celebrated 19 years last week. We have two great kids. Our oldest daughter just started college at the beginning of the month. She is planning to be a physicians assistant. Our son will be a sophomore in he this year and is starting to question where he would like to go with his life, so the we whole search is on again.

Hectic life but wouldn't have it any other way. I truly believe you should live life to the fullest everyday.

Hello everyone, I'm Jesi. I currently teach kindergarten in Central Florida. This will be my second year. I feel like a lunatic, but I am so ready for summer vacation to be over. I can't wait to get back to work. Aside from being a teacher, I am a wife and mother of 2. There really isn't much to say about myself other than that. I have struggled with my weight since 5th grade and hope that this go round will prove beneficial to my overall health and happiness. If there is anything you want to know, feel free to ask!

Hi- I'm Amber. I am restarting Spark for the umpteenth million time, but I am psyched because IT IS SUMMER BREAK! I have been eating fairly healthy with a spattering of graduation parties here and there (too much yummy food). I am changing my teaching line next year so I plan on spending a lot of time getting ready and liking it!! I am so happy to have time to take care of myself, and develop some routines that will carry on into the school year. Aloha.

Hi! My name is Amy & I am currently teaching 3rd grade in Florida. I love my job, kids, & school, but find that I do not balance my life, primarily my food choices, at all from August to May. I have zero will power when it comes to potluck days and when parents show their gratefulness through baked goods. 🍪🍩🍰 The worst part is that's exactly how I thank MY kids' teachers! Starbucks & sweets! Lol! I timed my SP return to coincide with our Spring Break in the hopes that I can put some strategies into place & finish the year out with focus & inner strength. Looking forward to getting to know everyone & supporting each other!

Hello.
My name is Christine. I am a 4th grade teacher in New York City. I love my job and working with kids. These past two years have been the most challenging for me in terms of my career. I find myself stress eating even though I am generally healthy and active, I regret relying on takeout as a way to destress or treat myself. Today I am finally putting my foot down. Please send advice and motivation. I would like to lose 20 pounds.

Hi! I'm a high school math teacher in SC. This is my 3rd year in, and I'm on my 4th principal and 3rd set of standards. This school has been through quite a lot of change in the last 5 years, and I often feel like I get the full force of that change as the new teacher. I love teaching, and I love my kids, but the stress of this teacher life is gathering on my waist line!

My hope is to change my lifestyle. I want to sleep better, drink more water, and eat healthier. I want to set aside time for myself, as well as get my work done. And I definitely think having a community of people with similar goals who also GET this job will help a lot as I am making these changes :)

Have a great day, y'all!

I've taught middle school for about 18 years. I love my career and the students I work with but find that the very job I love causes me so much stress and I often turn to food as a result. I am starting anew and am glad that I found TLL. I desire to reach my weight-loss goal by the end of the year.

Last year I lost about 35 pounds but have since gained 15 pounds back. I really want to stop the lose-gain-lose cycle.

Hi! My name is Jen and I am a special ed para professional in an elementary school. I LOVE my job! I joined Spark back in 2013 and did very well, losing around 60 lbs! I found that I love to run and have ran in many 5K races... something I never thought was possible for myself!
In 2015 I had three big setbacks where I guess you could say I kind of lost "my spark". The biggest setback was back in May '15, when I fell at the gym and tore my meniscus. I am still going to physical therapy 2x/week, along with multiple dr appts. I have a big brace and am using crutches to get around. At work I use a wheel chair so my hands are available to help students.
After seeing how much weight I had gained over the last year, I've made it a point to come back to Sparkpeople and get back on track! I have started tracking food, but am stuck as to what kinds of exercise I can do to not aggravate the knee. I refuse to let my knee keep me from reaching my goals any longer!

Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control!

Your desire to change must be greater then your desire to stay the same!

Progress is progress, whether it's 1 pound or 100 pounds, it's still something to be very proud of!

Hi, I'm 38 and teach 5th grade Gifted & Talented students. Love my job and kids, they're awesome! I've taught in public/charter/informal settings for going on my 8th year now. I'm at a time in my life when I can focus more on myself and I'm totally taking advantage of it by getting healthy, in body, mind, and spirit! Would love some friends to help along the way, to give & receive encouragement!

HI!! I am a 34 year old HS math teacher in an inner city school. I was on spark before and did fabulous, but, somehow, life got in the way and I gained back 20 of the 40 lbs I lost. I am working on getting that back off, for good!!! I have tried other "fad" diets with friends in the past year, but finally decided to come back to spark, because this was where I was most successful!

Hi everyone. I am a 57 year old Elementary music teacher that has more weight than I want on my body. It is very apparent when I am getting up and down off the floor with my PK students!

I am excited to meet you and join in this journey together!

Hi everyone! I'm a 55 year old prek teacher in northern NM. I moved to NM from Florida the week before school started. After losing 50lbs, I "found" 25 of them during the move and transition (I was 10lbs away from my goal weight). I had been out of the gym for 18mths. due to adrenal fatigue and a stress fracture, but just got a new membership this week. I still don't really have any friends here yet, so I'm hoping to find some support through SP. I have 35lbs to lose and am finally motivated to get going on this journey again. I'm excited to be a part of the NM team.

Hello! I'm Angela, and I'm an academic advisor/ instructor at Appalachian State University in the mountains of North Carolina. I have a masters and doctorate in education administration and focused my dissertation on academic advising of first generation college students. I mainly teach classes on social justice and education, but I'm combining Harry Potter and social justice for the first time in spring - should be fun as my students will be interested in the Harry Potter side of things if nothing else. My primary job is to coordinate student services (advising, orientation and student issues) for 5 advisors and 700 students. Teaching is just a great and fun bonus, but I love it and plan to move into the professorial world at some point in my far future.

I've recently gained nearly 20 pounds in less than 2 months, and I was certainly no lightweight to begin with!, following somehow contracting MRSA. I was on antibiotics and other meds for nearly 2 months to deal with the MRSA, and this led to complication after complication. I'm working with my doctors to try to lose the weight now and am using phentermine as a boost, but I'm pretty depressed that I now only have 3 pairs of pants that actually fit me.

I'm trying to eat lower carb/ lower glycemic index, but it's hard because I'm fairly convinced that all my teeth are sweet teeth. If anyone has suggestions or recipes, I'm happy to share! I love to cook and have a bunch of recipes under my name in Spark Recipes.

I look forward to "meeting" all of you!

Best,
Angela

Stay safe wherever you teach! These days are so turbulent no matter where you are, I think.

Hi there!
I am an elementary teacher. I have taught Stateside the past few years, and am getting ready to teach abroad next month.
I certainly enjoy teaching, but it is hard finding balance between the demands of new teachers and personal health. What do you all do to make sure you get your important needs met too?

emoticon to the team ERINM! So glad you found us. Congrats on surviving your first week with first graders. They can be a lively group!

Do you go out to recess with them? You can get a lot of walking done in that yard! LOL

Have your gym stuff in the car ready to go either before or after school.

Remember it is hard to take care of others if you don't take care of yourself as well!!

Keep us posted on the Chat thread how things are going. We have some seasoned teachers that might be able to answer some teaching questions for you! I know time is valuable but the resource is here if/when you need it!
