As long as you never spend $120 for two at a drive-thru...

I do agree, the occasional $120 for a fine meal is fine and luxurious. But as an example for how much we over-indulged, in 2009, to celebrate my 1st pregnancy my husband and I had so many celebratory dinners that we spent $2000 in food for that one month. On just the two of us. Routinely we spend $1500 on my family of 5. These are often with 5-7 trips a month to drive throughs, 7 trips to the soda shop, 3 trips to sit down restaurants. In learning how much we're spending its a great motivator for eating better. haha!

Thanks so much for the welcome all!

And I didn't mean for it to read as I see myself a victim of my circumstances, though I see how it could have. More that I find myself surrounded often by the peer pressure to eat.

Wecome, Letia.

I see no problem with spending $120+ for a fine meal. My problem would be doing it often enough that I'd be planning my life around food; the dollar amount is irrelevant.

My evil run-ins with food have been the occasions when I use it to soothe myself. The truth is that it's never a comfort or "friend," as some say, because I end up feeling worse after over indulging.

The best I can offer is to think of each day as the only one. Eating wisely for just one day counts if it would have been a struggle otherwise. Giving one's self credit for an odd, successful day is one's due and it may well be support for the next successful day.

Welcome.
It's part of American culture to eat for all occasions. So, your family is not unusual.
You can CHOSE to be a VICTIM of this and blame your family as an excuse.
This may sound harsh but it is meant to allow awareness.
You CAN take responsibility for your choices,
We are here to support healthy decisions.

Have a TERRIFIC day!

Letia,

I am the same way! Struggled with weight my whole life but like you I'm still struggling with the self-love and acceptance. I need counseling on this or something to help me. I have been on this last time of losing weight for what seems like 6 or 7 years. I'm 55 and not losing but seem to be gaining even though I exercise daily. I have lost about 75, give or take some. I'm afraid to step back on scale.
I hope this works for you and feel free to add me as a friend and I will do the same!

Tina

Hi everyone!

I'm Letia. I have struggled with my weight my whole life, but in truth I've struggled with self-acceptance and self-love more.

I come from a loving happy family that eats. We eat to celebrate, we eat to mourn, we eat with stress. Every holiday is met with a hundred traditional foods. We get together on at least one Saturday a month to game together and to eat ridiculous amounts of unhealthy foods.

I know I am an addict to food. There was a time I wouldn't hesitate to spend $120 on a meal for my husband and I to "experience" all the chef had to offer. I associate food with love and look to fill myself with it often. These are challenges for me, and having recognized it I sought help.

In 2015 I went to a nutrition counselor for six months. It opened my eyes to the level of dependence I have with food. Unfortunately we moved at the end of my first six month session and in our new town in Idaho we don't have counselors that focus on overeating or food addiction. The last year I have been unable to lose anything, and conflicting research in eating healthy has left me confused and frustrated. I spoke with my doctor in hopes of finding a new counselor and in hopes of working with a nutritionist. Instead he prescribed me anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds. It helped the stress levels, but I haven't lost anything and its not doing anything for my addiction.

I just want to be free.

I feel strongly that I need a community that understands me and my struggles. That understands eating emotionally for happy as well as sad reason. For love as well as frustration. That I can help lift up when they're down, or encourage when they're happy and that will help me in the same way.

Anyways, if you hadn't noticed I can get long winded, haha. Hope we all have a happy healthy nutritious day!
