Welcome, JB. Lisa and Roxy. I'm here to tell you that it's totally possible to stick with your reasonable plan whether you have the best coping strategies or not. Sometimes my coping strategy is whimpering on my couch or just watching so-called funny cat videos on youtube. Is that solving my emotional problems? Not really, but some of them are too hard to face in the moment or are just really not possible to solve then; they are ongoing life issues. I NEVER wish I had eaten instead of doing silly things.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the team but not to SP. I've finally accepted that I'm an emotional eater. Mostly when stressed. I'm hoping to learn some coping mechanisms as well. I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Hello everybody! I am new to the group. I am definitely an emotional eater and I am hoping to find new ways of coping other than turning to food. I would love to have a healthier relationship with food and myself.

Hi everyone! New to this team. Been on and off spark people for years. A long time ago I thought I had over come emotional over eating. And in many ways I did. I used to eat so much more, I used to live off soda and pop tarts, frozen pizza etc. I mostly don't drink soda anymore at all. I enjoy a lot of healthy food. I gave up all alcohol. I am healthier than ever. I overcame some chronic illnesses. But I'm still just as big as ever and this morning I found the first thing I was thinking of was all the foods I could eat today for fun in between my healthy foods. That really hit me right between the eyes this morning. A twinge of fear I would go back to my old ways and gain even more weight hit me.
I need to figure this out once and for all.
I have come to far to give up now. I don't want to be fat and miserable anymore.

I am new to Spark People and new to this team. I have recently begun to change some of the choices that I make in relation to food. Emotionally eating is something I have been doing for a very long time, since childhood. I am looking for motivation to stay focused on the small changes I have begun to make.

Hi, I am new to the team! I am a compulsive eater. I have been on Spark since 2009 but I have not been active in years. I recently started really looking at why I use food and I am trying to get it under control.

Hello from Oregon (formerly Georgia, Maryland and Virginia). I used to be quite thin - embarrassingly so. But then my dad died while Mom was in chemo, I was getting a divorce, my kids were mad at me and I foreclosed on my House after I lost a job. That was TEN years ago. I gained a lot of weight and have not been able to lose it without gaining it all back plus another 10. I know full well that I am capable, but I have very low self esteem now and keep sabotaging myself.

Looking to increase energy and decrease weight by my vacation!

Hi my name is Lisa and boy am I an emotional eater. I recently found out where it came from, but getting out of the cycle has been very hard. I try to talk myself out of it and sometimes don't even realize I have food in front of me.
I have been on sparkpeople for a long time, but just started really following the program.
Good luck to us all!!

Hello, I'm Gamshoes

I have always been an emotional eater, but was doing well with my weight loss, until my younger sister was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer right after Christmas. I fell back on emotional eating, and gained a lot of weight. My sister passed away in February, and it's been hard to get back on track with my food and exercise. I'm back on SP, and have joined this group for support!

Hello team members,
I am a returning Spark person who recently starting back on Spark People, seven weeks ago. I am working on making positive changes in my life style that will lead to improved health, energy, and mental well being! I am an emotional eater, more so when depressed, stressed, or frustrated:( I am looking for Spark friends that are going through the same type of issues to share this journey with.

Hi everybody! My name is Heather. I've been on SP for 6 years, but after some time away I started all over last month. Things are going really well.

I joined this team because I have a problem with emotional eating and it would be great to have support and meet new friends here. I am doing/working on different things to combat it.

I look forward to speaking with you all and getting to know you all. I hope that I can be an encouragement to you as well.

Hi, My name is Mary, and I am back after a little bit. I missed all of my friends and hope to make new friends. I am married and have 3 grown daughters. Being an emotional eater is hard to recognize because so many different emotions can change your eating habits. I joined this team today. I am excited! emoticon emoticon

Hi everyone. I'm Angela and I'm a second year medical student on the east coast. I've been an on/off user of Spark People and similar sites over the past few years, but since starting medical school, I've found keeping healthy is something I've been struggling with a lot, and I put on quite a bit of weight. I'm looking to regain my activity level and fitness, as well as lose weight, so that I can maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout graduate school into my professional career.

Bonnie, emotions are not the only reason people eat when not hungry. Humans are influenced to eat by many things. You're welcome to explore here, but don't assume you must be experiencing an emotion that's making you eat just because you eat randomly.

hi,
I am new to this Team,
I had no idea what EE was, I had to google it .. and I guess, I am in this group, its strange to me, because I don't recall having emotions, as I stuff chips in my face .. I am just thinking about finishing the bag , then regret it, with the salt over load ..

The habit is very strong, and won't want to give up on its own. Reach within yourself and find the very legitimate reasons you have to change this behavior, unless you feel it's not costing you anything. For me, it was really last about the mental issues, and there was some shame and regret over it, but I fought those. The biggest issue was that I was very uncomfortable physically way too often from that kind of eating. I magnified my desire to change that. But it's true that it was also whittling away at my spirit. When I got very clear about both of those, it became easier to face the emotions without the prop. Not easy, just easier.

I am new to this group. I am definitely an emotional eater, you name it, stress, mad, sad, happy, excited, in front of me, bored, etc etc etc. I wasn't when I was a child though so I know that it could be controlled. Just don't seem to want to control it. Sigh, I think that is something that I shall have to deal with.

Have an enjoyable day

Sdeecal, I hope you don't feel that your history means you are doomed. Our history matters less than our belief that we are not controlled by our whims. Even our beliefs can be habits! You can change both. We're on your side!

I just joined this group.

Emotional eating runs in my family. I saw one of my aunts hiding in the kitchen devouring the last piece of cream pie at a family gathering. She was hurriedly stuffing it in before anyone saw her. My mother ate jell-o with her bare hands when my father was in the hospital. I have way too many examples to tell them all here. I always eat when I'm stressed or angry. Bad emotions always result in hunger. The only time I lost my appetite was when my dog died suddenly. It was the only time EVER. That's why I remember it clearly.

Motivation gets you started. Habit keeps you going.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this team but old to emotional eating. Holidays are fraught with memories for me--all concerning high-calorie food. I found myself thinking and wishing things were different when I realized that remaining on my healthy food plan was the best sort of memory I could have tomorrow. Thank You all for making SP so wonderful. I'm so grateful to be here. emoticon

Hi all! My name is Lisa, and I am an emotional eater. I joined spark about two months ago to get my eating under control, and after about 30 days, things finally started to come together. I would love to meet some new friends here to be able to share our struggles and cheer each other along! emoticon

Hello, new posters. My goal is to continue to what I call managing food successfully. This means that I may eat for emotional reasons sometimes (usually that means eating at meal time even though I"m not particularly hungry but want the experience). I don't believe all non-hunger eating is emotional, especially when it's the highly palatable foods. I've been able to manage my compulsive overeating decently enough the past seven years to lose 50 lbs. I am not a purist about food, but to the average American, I probably look like it. I'm not new but letting you know I'm here to share cheers and warm hugs when needed. It can be done!

Hi team, I'm back ! I've been with Sparkpeople for many years now. I also left for a few and now I am back. I especially rejoined this team because I realize that I'm an emotional eater with many vices such as popcorn, chips, cookies, sunflower seeds etc. I really need to get a handle on this to stop all this bingeing. I solicit your help. All are welcome. Thank you!

Hi team, I haven't logged into spark in awhile. Life just got in the way. I'm back and focused more then ever to get healthy. Things have been good so far since I started back a couple of days ago. Life is throwing my family a curveball now. We are placing my father-in-law on hospice tomorrow. We got the call last night and spent the majority of the day with him today. So far so good, but now it's evening and everyone is sleeping. I'm thinking I need something to munch on....so I went for coleslaw instead of the piece of cake in the refrigerator. I've actually stayed within my goals today.

I have been back to sparkepeople for 30 days now but still trying to find where I fit in. I am a compulsive overeater, emotional eater. I have been doing very good. Just went to the Dr this morning my BP is down my weight is down and I am feeling good. In the past this is when I know I need the most help. I will start to get to confident and think I can do this on my own and stop working with the tools then I slowly resort back to old habits. I don't want that to happen this time. I need your help!

Erica, how is it going? Struggle usually translates to giving yourself the option to deviate from your plan. We're on your side!
