Goals in life: Make the world a better place, one person's happiness at a time; be a good mother

Intrests: The Current, music, middle eastern dance, House

Reasons for becoming an LMT: I've always had a passion to help people and I think this would be a good way to do it. I like comforting people. I also think that no matter where I go in life, it is a skill that I'll be able to take with me.

How Long Have you been active in this field: -2 months. I joined this team because its something I'm interested in, but I only just turned in my application to massage therapy school. The program wouldn't start until May.

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special intrest to you or that you are certified in: I'd like to learn shiatsu at some point.

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: Courage I didn't know I had to actually apply.

What are some of the challenges: Waiting to hear back. :P

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: Working in a clinic.

How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: Right now I'd have to say my outlook on life is what influenced me to become a massage therapist. I think that every little bit of positivity we can send out in the world makes it a better place.

Name: Jennifer (aka MsStress)
Location: Richmond, VA soon to be greater Boston, Mass.
B-day: July 5

Interests: Learning, reaching my full potential, knitting, piano, gourmet cooking, foreign cultures and travel, languages, medicine, and nutrition.

Why massage? Twenty years ago I starting pursuing a certificate as a physician assistant and my husband was transfered, I got pregnant, and life intervened. Now in my forties I realized I didn't want a 60+ hour per week job but I still wanted to be involved in helping people acquire or maintain wellness in their lives. I like massage because I can participate as a wellness advocate dealing with the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. This work is amazing!

Length of career: I'm a newbie. Just got certified in August 2010.

Modalities: Interested in NMT, Vodder's LMD, Myofascial release, and medical massage.

Rewards: Healthy touch and healing energy benefit both the client and the therapist. Also, I've really been encouraged by the discovery of how elastic my brain is. You're never to old to learn new things.

Challenges: Practicing what I preach and being patient with my developement. Life's a journey and I need to take it slow or I miss stuff by rushing through.

In 5 years I'd like to be part of a thriving practice that helps manage and relieve pain. I want to become an expert in acute injury recovery.

How has being a massage therapist influenced my outlook on life? Before the training, I would be in situations that felt wrong and didn't know what to do. Now I am really aware of other people's energy and becoming aware of the energy that I project. I deliberately try to surround myself with edifying energy and try to organize my life to project an encouraging vibe. What you project you get back ten fold. I think massage has given me tools to be more 'others' focused without losing myself in a door mat style service. All of that is healthy, I think. It's all about being a part of your world and community while maintaining balance in your private life.

Remember: You were created with a purpose - be your radiant, authentic self.

Goals in life: To continually learn, experience and evolve. To one day meet the love of my life.

Interests: Art, History, Philosophy, Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, Cooking good food, laughter, movies and traveling.

Reasons for becoming an LMT: I grew up a Catholic. I can still remember trying to use my energy to make a small dead animal come to life again. My very Catholic grandmother caught me and scolded me for offending God. Since that time, I have been in the closet in regards to energy healing and the body/mind connection. After taking a more traditionally accepted path and working for a university, I looked around my office and broke out crying wondering if this was all there is to the rest of my life. Soon after that realization, I quit my cushy university job and went to massage school. My soul is happy at last!

How Long Have you been active in this field: I graduated, became Nationally Certified and State Licensed in April of 2008. So, 2 1/2 years now.

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special interest to you or that you are certified in: Being a relative beginner in the profession, there is much for me to still learn. I am currently most fascinated and interested in fascia or as I call it "The Devil Inside!"

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: I always leave work in a better mood than when I arrived which is so awesome and amazing! I am also humbled to be part of something so profound...Having a client who is in chronic pain who has endured pain clinics, surgeries and drugs and still had no relief until they book an appointment with me to discover, after a few sessions, that they are pain free for the first time in years. Who wouldn't be humbled and amazed by that?!

What are some of the challenges: My challenge is probably my life lesson, too. I must learn to value and love myself by taking good care of myself as readily as I would my clients.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: Having my practice thriving with a client load that is consistent and happily manageable. Hopefully, I will have finally met the love of my life, too!

How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: As a massage therapist, you are given the opportunity to witness the power of the mind/body connection. It is really pretty wild how the mind will work really hard to override the body. However, the body has ways of eventually being heard. So, I find that I try to spend a wee bit of alone time each day to check in with my body to see what's up. A body that goes unheard for too long creates illness. I would like to maintain a long and healthful life!

Life Goals: Raise my kids to fruition, attain spiritual maturity, uplift my husband, be all I can be.

Interests: So many...and always open for new experiences.

Why massage: Wanted to spend more time with my tiny (at the time) daughter and make as much money as a 40 hr/wk job. Single mom, blah blah blah.

Since when: March 2003. Into my eigth year!

Modalities: Have a knack for finding that fine line right before pain becomes too much to bear. Have a knack for kinesiology - getting the hitches out of folks' giddie-ups.

Rewards: The amazing fact that so many people have allowed me to participate in their healing journies. Tenderness to and from clients with cancer. Movement of a fetus in a pregnant client. Tears from newly widowed clients. "Fixing" a teenaged athlete's sore shoulder. And on and on and on and on.

Challenges: Being a working wife and mother. The physical toll it takes after years in the field as I move through my early 40s. The inability to drink enough water, and the hypocrisy I feel when I tell clients to do what I cannot.

5 years: Excellent David Bowie song (see Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars). I am not sure. I am currently in The Unknowing. I love what I do - but as time passes - it takes more and more of a toll on the old body.

Outlook influences: I was an accountant for 18 years before this. I smoked, ate far too much fast food, worked the grind. A single mother of a fabulous girl that had never even been proposed to. I had the "sadness" that I couldn't put my finger on.

Now - I am a 5 month old vegan. Ran the Nike Women's Marathon in October of 2008. A married mother of 4 teenagers (one of whom was the fabulous girl aforementioned). I figured out my "sadness" and got over it.

Go to massage school - change your life.....

Goals in life: To be happy and healthy, and share a wonderful marriage with my husband.

Intrests: Besides massage... cooking, baking, reading, working on arts and crafts, spending time with my two cats (and my husband of 3 years). Traveling as much as time and money allows.

Reasons for becoming an LMT: I wanted a career that was active, and would allow me to help people. It has been a perfect fit.

How Long Have you been active in this field: I finished my 18 months of schooling in November 2008. I became state certified in January 2009.

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special intrest to you or that you are certified in: I have taken a deep tissue class. I am also certified in Bellanina Facelift Massage.

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: It is such a good feeling to hear people praise your work when they get off the table. I love having the connection with clients, and really helping them.

What are some of the challenges: I work on commission, so with the economy the way it is right now, things have been rough.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: Hopefully doing 60% Facelift massage, and 40% massage. Hopefully renting my own space for the Facelift Massage work, and working for my current employer for my massage work.

How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: It has made me really appreciate good health, also to be more compassionate.

Have a happy, healthy day!

Goals in life: to finish LMT training, build a practice, study many modalities of massage
Interests: outdoors, yoga, meditation, journaling

Reasons for becoming an LMT: I've always been interested in healing. I feel like human touch is something lacking in our society and massage is a great way to make people comfortable with touch and natural healing.

How Long Have you been active in this field: I'm not currently an LMT. I just started school and should be finished by June or September of 2011.

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special interest to you or that you are certified in: I'm very interested in EFT. Right now I'm taking in everything that I can.

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: In school I think a big reward is the community that it provides. Learning to communicate and developing compassion.

What are some of the challenges: I don't know, yet. One challenge with school is my Palpation class. Learning bony landmarks and muscles.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: 5 years from now I will have a successful private practice.

How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: Being in LMT school has made me more aware of being non-judgemental, having compassion for all people, and seeing the light in everything.

Goals in life: be a full-time therapist, raise my daughters to be confident, compassionate women.

Reasons for becoming an LMT: I wanted to do this right out of high school, but it didn't happen until last year. Happen to have an accredited massage and holistic health school right around the corner from my house:-)

How Long Have you been active in this feild: licensed since Oct. 2009. Hoping to take the national certification test next year.

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special intrest to you or that you are certified in: I am certified in shiatsu, reflexology, swedish, deep-tissue.

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: the fact that I am doing something I love is the best thing of all.

What are some of the challenges: no-show clients, working full-time while trying to build my massage clientele, while raising two kids, while going to school.....lol

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: with my own wildly successful therapeutic massage practice (my own office, not in a salon or spa.)

How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: It has made me relax and look at things from all perspectives. It has made me a more compassionate person.

Goals in life: be a successful LMT, expand my graphic design business, be healthy, be happy, live well
Interests: graphic design, socializing, museums, animals
Reasons for becoming an LMT: I'm a graphic designer. Currently in school to be an LMT. I graduated in 2006 and worked a few years but never found a job that completely fulfilled me. I wanted to go to massage school out of HS, but wasn't quite prepared for the "real world" yet. So without a job this past year, I decided to go back. I am so happy with my decision.
How Long Have you been active in this field: started school October 2009, graduate October 2010. boards December 2010?
Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special interest to you or that you are certified in: right now I am thinking Pregnancy massage, maybe Deep Tissue, those are all I know so far.
What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: meeting and talking with some many different people. hearing their stories, it can be very inspiring.
What are some of the challenges: i have a small frame, I need to build up some major muscle to work clients bigger than me. Or i just have bad body mechanics still.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: hopefully employed :D maybe at a spa or wellness spa, more like somewhere with a nutritionist, acupuncturist (tho it freaks me out!). eventually sharing a practice perhaps.
How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: hasn't done much yet, but make me more aware of how I present my body

I really look forward to talking with anyone here. I want to learn from other LMTs. There's so much I don't know and if you have any advice, I'd love to hear it!

Hello Everyone!

I'm jumping the gun a bit (I'm not yet an LMT) but I am currently in school for massage therapy. I will graduate in May 2010 and take the state boards in June. I graduated with a degree in Psychology and after graduation I immediately thought about massage school. I put it on hold though while I worked a full-time office job. After 2 years, I had gained weight and was miserable everyday. I decided to quit that job and pursue my dreams so I am now on the path to become an LMT which I'm very excited about!

When I'm not at school, I also own my own art business (http://www.mokopo.com). I'm using this transitional time to work on improving myself and finding that life that will make me happy. I think I'm on my way... emoticon

Hi,
I see that this site is not used too often, but thought I would join anyway :)

My name is Debbie and I live in WA State. I have been an LMP for over 10 years and have my own practice. I'm now certified in Bowenwork which is a really wonderful modality that assist the body in healing itself. I also really like it because I can work on more than one person at a time. Since I have 3 treatment rooms, I can work on 3 different people.

TTFN!

I love my Spark Buddies!

Hi all,
I am from MI and have just joined.
I am certified in medical massage from Blue Heron Academy and Reflexology from International Institute of Reflexology.
I moved my practice from a local salon to my home.
I had decided to quit the whole practice but as soon as I walked in the house after moving everything from the shop, I had a call for a session. I gave her options of back at the salon or at my home. Long story short it was wonderful. Fate? I was so relaxed (other than my curious dog...hey I am from rural MI and I have a few things to work out). My client also felt it was so comfortable. She asked me not to give up. I sure didn't want to after that first session in my home.
So finally I am doing something I wanted. We are turning the 2nd story of the garage into a studio. It is so relaxing up there.
I also changed my affiliation from AMMA to AMTA and can now get the CEU's in many different modalities to better treat my clients and expand my practice.
Sorry I was so long winded but I am still a little giddy with the changes.
Also, I would love to hear from others about what modalities they use. Especially those that seem to appeal to your clients.

Goals in life: To find my "healthy" self, so that I may enjoy life and my family like I should.

Interests: There are many and most surround my family, but I love to create. I tend to fall on the artistic side, but I'm not always a great artist. Love music as well and hope to pick up where I left off with my piano one day soon.

Reasons for becoming an LMT: Something inside me kept pointing me in this direction, so I followed.

How Long Have you been active in this field: 9 Years...goodness, has it been that many years already?

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special interest to you or that you are certified in:
Always trying new modalities, but I love the effect of trigger point therapy and Vodder lymphatic drainage.

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: The ability to aid an individual in recovery and watch their improvement during a course of therapy.

What are some of the challenges: Right now the challenges lie within my health and being a new Mommy for the first time. Sometimes I forget I need to take care of me. I want to remain in this field of work, so learning to work within my limits is a must.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: Hopefully healthy and opening the doors of my own business once again.

How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: It has shown me the importance of touch and how that effect every individual.

To successfully help my sons be all that they can be. To have a massage business that reaches beyond the norm, but to help those who actually are in pain.

Interests:
Family, College, and the internet

Reasons for becoming an LMT:
I love to help others, and what a great way to really help someone. I didn't really grow up 'wanting' to do anything, but as I massaged co-workers I realized what I was meant to do. I love it!

How Long Have you been active in this feild:
7 wonderful years

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special interest to you or that you are certified in:
Here is what I love to do... Deep tissue, Chair Massage, Swedish &
Therapeutic

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career:
To see people get better, and to help people cope with chronic pain, there's nothing like it. One of my favorite stories is how one of my clients came to me using a cane, and within 4 sessions, stopped using it. That makes me so happy and satisfied not only as a therapist, but as a person.

What are some of the challenges:
none that I can think of right now.

Hi Kristen.
Welcome. I just joined the board last week and it is a slow board but that is okay! Glad you decided to become a therapist. Definatly make sure you take care of yourself. The average career for a therapist is only like 6 to 8 years. I have been doing massage for over 10 years and I love it!
Hopefully your state will get there licence in place. I think that is important. It is scarry when just anyone can say they are a "massage therapist".

I just found this group and am thrilled to have come across all of you. It seems there are several in the group but not very many active people here. I love what I do and hope to get to know you and learn as much as I can from each and every one of you.

Name: Jodi

Location: Southwest Missouri

B-day: December 5

Goals in life: To be with and take care of the person I love the most (one of these days!!), be debt free, expand my knowledge in the most interesting career I have ever had the chance to "fall" into, to be happy and healthy.

Interests: Massage, Travel, Cooking, Scrapbooking

Reasons for becoming an LMT: A special person in my life led me to where I am today. After working in a school district for almost 20 years, I looked into massage therapy as a hobby to pamper and spoil my sweetheart. Never having personally experienced this wonderful treatment, I was totally blown away after my first massage and have never looked back since! I love what my life has become.

How Long Have you been active in this field: 2 1/2 years

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special interest to you or that you are certified in: Not certified in any specific modality but love EVERYTHING about massage. I think I might be interested in learning more about myofascial release and trigger point therapy. Just getting ready to branch out into other areas after getting my feet wet and feeling confident about what I have learned so far.

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: Meeting some of the most interesting and amazing people ever! Seeing that glazed, happy look in the eyes of someone after just getting off my table. Hearing that they feel much better and knowing they will be back! BUYING A HOUSE ALL ON MY OWN! emoticon

What are some of the challenges: People that want me to "fix" them. People that don't appreciate their time on the table and take it for granted. Definitely the economy in a profession that generally works off of commission! PAYING MY NEW MORTGAGE! emoticon

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: Still working at the awesome spa that I currently practice at while building up my business on the side. I love the spa and know that if I ever got a chance to be self-supporting in my own business that I would miss the clientele that I serve at the spa.

How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: My whole outlook has changed! I went from being a single mom with little to no financial/physical/emotional support with a very low paying job (depending on my parents for extra help) while raising 3 teens in a two-bedroom apartment to being a new homeowner (3 bedrooms - I finally get my own!!) working in an industry that I love that has allowed be to be self-sufficient while providing some awesome opportunities to my children! My quality of life has definitely changed for the MUCH BETTER!

Goals in life: Become better personally and professionally.
Interests: Cooking and DIY projects
Reasons for becoming an LMT: Something I was just drawn to. Plus I get to help people with out having to deal with blood. :)
How Long Have you been active in this field: I've been working for just under a year.
Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special interest to you or that you are certified in: Not at this time but I want to take more continuing ed on pregnancy massage.
What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: I just love it when clients don't want to get up and just rave about the massage. I also seeing someone who was all tense and in pain flow out of the room.
What are some of the challenges: Clients who come in with massive knots and issues and want a quick fix in one session- who also have an idea that deep tissue should always be hard and hurt.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: Hopefully with regular clients both at home and at the spa while I balance family life between the two.
How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: I find myself over all calmer and happier. It is so lovely having a trade I carry with me in my own two hands.

Goals in life: Survive until i'm done! emoticon

Actually, right now my goals are: continue to pay off personal debt, help my son pay off his student loan, continue to build my business.

Interests: Reading, movies, walking my dogs, playing with my dogs and cat, Tibetan Buddhism.

Reasons for becoming an LMT: Wanted to help...i worked in the medical field after college and knew it was the right direction, but the wrong modality. Found massage therapy while working for a chiropractor in Florida and knew that was it!

How Long Have you been active in this field: I got my Reiki I attunement in 1985, massage certification in 1987, Reiki II attunement in 1996, Jin Shin Jyutsu certification in 2003, and Reiki Master attunement in June of this year.

Do you have any modalities of massage that are of special interest to you or that you are certified in: See last answer! I love the combination of massage and energy work, and so do my clients!

What are some of the rewards that you have found in this Career: Flexible hours, that "warm fuzzy" feeling of being of service.

What are some of the challenges: Burn-out--i sometimes wish i would care for myself as well as i care for my client--AND, i'm improving in that area!

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now: Not sure...

How has being a MASSAGE THERAPIST influenced your outlook on life: I have learned the value of silence and simplicity.
