Not to defend FBD but it isn't that restrictive. The only time they limit you to 1200 calories was during an initial 4-day jumpstart (much shorter period than any of the other diets and their phase/wave 1 vs 2 stuff). After that 4-day, calories are at 1600 calories which is over my limit normally so its not restictive. (Plus, 1600 is just a guideline used - you can shave some calories off or add them to every meal to adjust daily totals to the one that fits you personally.) Eat a Mediterranean Diet, stay within your SP calorie tracking limits, and consciously work to swap out bad fats for good fats (like olive oil instead of butter) and you are approximately following FBD. All the rest is just windowdressing for marketing purposes.

Sonoma diet - I get their free newsletter because I love the recipes (usually one per week) and some of their other informational tidbits on food/nutrition. Once again (without getting into the inital dieting phases/waves) sonoma's maintenance phase and lifestyle emphasis just looked like med diet with a fancy marketing wrapper. Sonoma seemed to me to be one of the first to put a premium on sitting and enjoying your meals and making this a lifestyle.

Tons of books out there but don't recall seeing one I was crazy about
So
yes
there is plenty of room and need for our new Med.Way book!

Perhaps it is restrictive because they are pushing fast weigh loss. Part of the SP philosophy and the regular Mediterranean Way of eating is that this is about making a life style change. Moderate weight loss is not only healthier but also the person is more likely to keep the weight off. I like the more moderate approach myself. I want this to be the last diet I am on. I would rather have it take me longer to get there, but be able to keep it off and continue to live a healthy life style, than take it off quick, but gain it back - or worse - get discourage and go off of the diet. I've been on that road way to many times!

I don't know much about the Okinawa diet - other than (correct me if I am wrong) it is the other 'worlds healthiest diet'. I really like the food of the Mediterranean region, so for me the choice is clear.

yeah i agree with you! i checked out a ton of books at the library and they all are saying the same thing. Okinawa diet even. FBD seems to be alot more calorie portion restrictive during the losing stage. Seems like you couldn't have coffee even. Also we tried it and 1200 calories was very difficult with that one...i like the idea that we could eat as much fish till we are full

You are quite welcome - but that is what this team is all about. It is a great group of people.

fbd = Flat Belly Diet!

I've have also read that the fbd emoticon is basically another version of the Mediterranean diet, just like the Sonoma diet, and the Omega diet are. I think we should all put our heads together, write a Mediterranean diet book, give it a catchy new name and make a fortune! emoticon

LOGNSMOM - Welcome to the team!

Okay, since Susie & Maggie handled avocados & EVOO
I'll just say a little more on recipes.

I didn't really know about the team Links until recently so Maggie added one of my favorite newer links there - the CookingLight article with its great pictures
www.cookinglight.com/food/quick-heal
th
y/superfast-mediterranean-dishes-20-R>minutes-or-less-00400000042111/page29.html

This also reminded me of another great resource I learned of two months ago but kept forgetting to post that link...so I just added it -
If you are a fan of Greek food
www.greek-recipe.com/index.php
Tons of info there. It's like a Greek cooking school. I've barely had time to scratch the surface exploring.

Then there is always the team recipes forum...
One of my 2011 projects is to tame/organize recipes (and find my buried recipe links) so as I do that I'll keep adding to this team as applicable.

Good Luck on your mediterranean voyage! emoticon

FBD is a variation of Mediterranean Diet so just about any recipes you may have picked up on that journey should work here as well.

Welcome to the Team! Susie answered the avocado questions so I'll have a go at the Olive Oil. Extra Virgin is the way to go, for sure. They all taste a little different so it kind of depends on preference. If you can find them, the Greek brands tend to be a bit less expensive and are every bit as good as the Italian. Italian tends to be the priciest - then Spanish - then Greek. Probably has to do with the market as most people in the US are more familiar with the Italian brands so they think they are better quality. Not so. I get a different brand every time and I can't say I have found a brand I don't like.

If you are looking for recipes there are several links on this site. You can click on the link button on the team page or go over to the $10,000 pyramid game on the challenge board. I just posted a link on that board this morning that is full of great Mediterranean recipes. Look for my 1/10 post with the trivia question - the link is on that post.

I've been on spark for awhile but recently my husband's dr suggested the mediterranean prescription for him. HE is wanting to do something (finally) and i am all on board. I checked the book out from the library and am now hunting down recipes/books suggestions.

I do have a question. I never saw any mention of avocados in the book is this an acceptable food? I know it is a great source of healthy fat but i was curious to know FOR SURE! I've done the flat belly diet and avocados were included.
