Hi! This is day two for me on the challenge. I decided that November was the month for me to really make it happen. I have set more concrete goals and I really want to stick with them. One was to make sure I got enough sleep. I am aiming to get to bed before 11pm. I didn't have too much success last night...I was on SP website reading and trying to get ideas for helping me stick with it. I will have to do this earlier in the day, but I really felt encouraged to use SP website way more than I have. Here's to a good night sleep.

Good morning everyone. I joined this team because I'm hoping I can learn how to take care of myself in all ways. I have horrible sleep habits and hopefully you guys can get me on the right track. I know the 1st thing I should probably do is get the TV out of my bedroom. Old habits are hard to break aren't they!

Hi I'm new!

My decision to join this team was to keep me on track regarding the number of hours of sleep I get each night. I'm pretty consistent with what time I wake up each morning (at least during the work week), but I am not consistent with what time I go to bed. Even though I may be tired, I find myself channel-surfing after 11pm each night; sometimes falling asleep on the couch.

I'm hoping this team will help me be more consistent with going to bed at a reasonable hour, and getting the 7-8 hours of recommended sleep each night. I sleep very well, and rarely have restless sleeps; I just need to be more consistent.

Recently found SP and your team this week. I've been an erratic sleeper all of my remembered life. It's not that I can't get to sleep, but that I wake every hour or so. Looking forward to more peaceful slumber in my future...

Hi everyone!

My name is Kristen. I'm a 22 year old fairly new mom of a ten month old little boy who keep me on my toes. I can honestly say that since my son has been born I have forgotten what sleep is! It took a couple months before my son started sleeping at night, he used to cry from about midnight until 5:00 AM most mornings, though his record was until 10:00 AM once! That was the longest night of my life so far! (he has gas problems so he cried a lot until we got the gas settled then he started sleeping and life became much easier!)

I just find now that once my son goes to bed that's my time for me, or for hubby and I to spend together so we'll stay up until 2:00 some nights then he gets up at 6:45 for work and I wake up with him. I've been doing good on no naps but man, I just can't get to bed before midnight! See, right now it's 11:49 PM and I'm still awake!

Here's really hoping this team can help me get a hold of some good habits that will help me sleep!

My name is Brynn and I'm a 22 year old nursing student from Canada. While I sleep fairly decently, I have many bad habits that need changing and there is definitely room for improvement! My bad habits include staying up late, changing sleep times, napping for 3 hours at the boyfriend's house and then driving home to go to bed, and eating sugar/caffeine close to bed time. And I probably have more bad habits I don't recognize.

Love, Brynn xox

Hi may name is Tricia..I seem to be averaging only 5-6 hours sleep a night. That is if I do not wake up for some reason. I seem to be fine during the day until 3pm then I start falling asleep. I need to get more sleep so I can keep up with my little girls.

Hi, I was so excited to find this challenge - I didn't realise that this affected so many people. Coming in a bit late, but will catch up, learn some stuff and hopefully get back to a restful, full on sleep night after night.
Cheers!

Let me reintroduce myself. I'm Kathryn and have been trying to establish a normal sleep routine for the last 50 years. I've always been a night owl and most of my jobs were 2nd shift or overnight which did not help. When I first got a computer 3 years ago, I acted like an addict staying up for hours and even all night playing games and surfing the web. At times I've had to unplug the thing as well as the TV.

I started this challenge about a month ago and had about 3 good days before starting to "mess up". So I am starting over and am determined to make a better showing this time around.

Hello everybody, I'm Sheri and have been a SparkPeople member since January 2008 and just love coming to the site. I am a leader of 3 Teams and have dealt with insomnia since a brain surgery for epilepsy in 1990. I got 10/10 on the sleep quiz, simply because I have been tested in sleep labs several times and I know a great deal about insomnia and the various ways to help. Even so, it does not mean I cannot learn more and new tips and techniques to help improve my resting time.
I live in Ontario in Canada, born and raised here. I'm happily divorced and love to write. Leading a team is both a privilege and an honor and it is good for me because it forces me to learn ahead of time, and I love to learn. I am a self-proclaimed self-help junkie/addict :) The more I learn, the more I want to learn.
I think the challenge will be interesting and insightful. I am currently 41 and for medical reasons I do not work. I am very busy volunteering many places on the World Wide Web and I enjoy it immensely.
Though I have been here 2 years, I hope to meet some new friends and people who want to change for the better and enjoy their new journey to a healthier person. Take care and enjoy your rest.

Sheri

Joined today, thought it was worth a try. I went ahead and started the journal. I did my best to look at my sleep pattern from last night...found it interesting I was "in bed" for 8.5 hours, but only got about 5.5 hours of sleep. I really hope I discover something that will help me get more real sleep for the time I put in. I think that's my biggest issue...going to sleep and staying asleep. Look forward to chatting with you guys during the challenge.

Hi everyone! I'm here to figure out how to improve my sleep, or rather, get back to sleeping the way I used to. I used to fall asleep within 5 minutes of my head hitting the pillow, and I would sleep straight through to the morning. But for the past couple of years I have been having trouble sleeping. I'm thinking it is because I have reached the peri-menopause stage. So I'm here to learn some things that might help me get better sleep!

Hello
I am here to improve the quality of my sleep. I usually wake up around 3 am or 4 am and catnap til 5 or 6. If I could sleep in til 5am I would consider that an awesome luxury. Sometimes I wake up every hour on the hour, but usually I wake up once or twice during the night.
One of the side effects of my medication is sleep interruption. I do believe in mind over matter and believe my mind is stronger than the pills. I just have to figure out how to use my mind to help me sleep better.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Even if we lose the race, we are still a winner (just a slow winner).

As long as you keep moving, you are still lapping those on the couch.

Hello,

I just joined this team. I sure do need it!! I've printed up what I need to do to start my sleep journal. I'll start that tonight. I'm soooooooooo sick of being sleep deprived. I have no energy to do a thing. I will give this a try. I've tried just about everything else!!

My name is Jessie. I have nearly mastered the nutrition and exercise portion of healthy living (I say nearly because there is ALWAYS something more to learn!), but I struggle with the sleeping portion of the healthy living equation. I have so many things that are a priority that it seems my life is a non-stop whirlwind from the time I get home from work. I always shoot for 10 pm but it does not seem like this will ever be attainable. I get home about 5:30. Most days I have an evening workout planned- anywhere from 10 mins to 30 mins. I get done with that and have dinner. After dinner I pack my meals and snacks for the next day as well as my hubbies food for work the next day. Then I shower, pick out my clothes for the next day, call my kids (they live in NY & I live in TN), make sure all my Spark responsibilities are taken care of and IF I'm LUCKY I may have a moment to check my e-mail or just do some fun, relaxing things for myself or with my hubbie. That doesn't happen if there is laundry to be done or other non-ending various chores. A couple of nights a week there are shows on that I like so I have to get everything done before them (most start at 8 or 9 pm). Nothing in that list is anything that I would consider optional! Even if I do get into bed by 10 or close to it I think of a million things I want to talk about with hubbie because he is my best friend and I love talking to him (and that is really the only time we have!). Recently I got a new job and there is a lot of stress associated with being the newbie there, so sometimes I either have trouble falling or staying asleep or both. I also have overactive bladder- if I take the meds for it I have unwanted side effects (I would prefer just to pee a lot!) so I get up AT LEAST once a night to go visit the bathroom (sometimes as many as 3). I also sleep with a snorer, so if he falls asleep before me I may be doomed (depending on how loud he is!). So HOW IN THE HECK am I ever going to get to bed at a decent time???!! I cannot possible see how- HELP!!

Hi all emoticon ..from the east coast, a mother of three boys. One of which just started our local college, second one is a senior in high school-starting college soon, and my younger sweet heart just turned 13 and he is special needs and will probably be with us for some time. God has worked in his life and carried far than the Drs predicted. What do they know sometimes?? I am a devout christian and married for almost twenty years. Sleep has been a struggle since I was much younger. I suffered from severe allergies, and acute asthma since I was born. You can not sleep if you can not breath that is for sure. In the earlier years meds either did not work or half worked or made me so jittery that it was hard to function. As of 1995 (when becoming a christian my asthma is well controlled. I was directed while in the hospital recovering from a near death experience to an awesome dr.) I am breathing more freely thank GOD! I was and still am so accustomed to staying up late. I just turned 50 hot flashes set in and other irrantants that go with entering menopause has started. Black Cohash helps me with that. I can fall asleep pretty easily and remain that way. Hubbie gets up at 4:00 for work. Sometimes waking me up but I usually can fall back to sleep. I guess I need a solid purpose for getting in bed earlier emoticon . Oh well I am here. emoticon

Hi There =) I'm Sarah and I have always LOVED sleeping. My current issue is that I haven't mastered getting enough sleep since I had my baby 10 months ago. Of course in the beginning I was having to feed her every 2 hours and that was SOOO hard (My heart goes out to all you mom's and helpful dad's out there). But now she's 10 months old and sleeping through the night and it seems like this is my only time to really get things done. My other sleep issue is that my brain WON'T stop. If I'm stressed or have things on my mind I could literally lay down for hours trying to sleep. It is so frustrating I don't know how to turn things off once they've gotten in there. So I'm hoping the challenge will help me develop some healthier sleep habits. I'm getting an average of 4-5 hours now and I'm exhausted all day long. I'm hoping to increase my sleep to a solid 7-8 hours.

I hope everyone is successful in their journey for better sleep =)

First of all, I'm a ding-dong. What am I doing yawning at the computer when I should have just gone to bed??

Long route here....my own awareness of the horrible sleep I've had for the last year and part Happiness Project (still reading). Some associated with depression and embarrassed to write this...probably tipping a few too many glasses of vino. Cut back on the vino, have been fighting my way back to a better life, and the sleep has not improved. Disappointing, and means it's more complicated than I thought.
I didn't want to join the challenge b/c I don't want to fail. So now I'm in!
I sometimes have trouble falling asleep. But my biggest problem is waking up repeatedly through the night, or waking up several hours too early and being unable to go back to sleep.

If you are a dreamer, come in,
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...
If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in!
Come in!

Morning all,
My name is Jen, and I have never really been a good sleeper. Most of my training was learning to get by on little sleep. Now that my training done- my brain can't seem to get back into normal sleep mode-so basically getting somewhere between 5-6 hours of sleep a night- and I am exhausted. I am really hoping this challenge can get me to do better than where i am. Hope everyone has a great tuesday

Hey there. I'm Connor. Sleeping has always been a problem for me. I can't remember a time that I ever spent less than 30 minutes lying in bed before falling asleep, and usually I spend at least an hour. Looking forward to changing this.

Hi. I'm Lisa and not new to Spark but new to this Team. Getting to sleep has become a problem over the last several months and I can tell a significant difference in how I feel each day. I am averaging 5 hours of sleep a night and sometimes that is interrupted. I used to fall asleep "before my head hit the pillow". Here to get tips and support. Wishing everyone more sleep and sweet dreams...

hi peeps!

i joined this team last week. i have had lots of issues in the past getting a great nights sleep. i had a sleep test done and learned that i had sleep apnea (lol, i thought i had early onset of altzheimers because i could not remember anything short term!!!) so i got hooked up with a CPAP machine and that helped a lot, although it was rather uncomfortable. i would always wake up during the night with a dry mouth. i have since stopped using it and for a long time still got good sleep. now i drink so much water i get up several times a night to go to the bathroom. i just can't seem to win. i try to stop drinking by like, 7pm, but that does not seem to help. looking forward to improving my sleep habits. kat

Hi! I'm Pat. I am 52 years old, happily married and the mother of three adult children, only one of them is still home. I hardly ever had sleeping problems until I hit menopause and was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis last June 2009.
Now I either have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. I wake up a couple times in the night. I need to follow some kind of regiment to help me sleep better. So this challenge came at a good time.

Hi,
When I got married three years ago my dh worked the 3-11 shift and I would stay up until he got home and wound down from work, then get up in the early morning to go to my job - usually getting only 4 or so hours of sleep. Over that period I gained about 25 pounds and I'm working on getting rid of the last 5-10 of those. My dh has a different job now, but he still often gets home after I should be in bed and asleep so I'm still struggling with wanting to be up to see him in the evenings, but realize I have to get adequate sleep.

Hi! I am Sam and I am a sleeper... lol
or at least I used to be. I recently moved and with other life stressors I have gone from my usual 8 hrs a night to less than 6 and I am so not a happy camper!
Gotta get back to those good night sleeps emoticon

I am afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis ! I find that
the workout that works for me is a one kilometer swim !
I'm kept cool by the water, so I don't get over-heated !

Hi. I'm Karen. I'm 59 years old, working about 6 hours a day as a paraeducator with English-Second-Language students. It's a new responsibility for me and it is causing me some stress, but I doubt that that altogether explains my sleep problems. I rarely stay up past 10:30, my goal is to be in bed by 9:00. My alarm goes off at 5:15. At 5:30 I walk 30-60 minutes.

Most nights I have little trouble falling asleep. The problem is waking up later and not going back into a deep sleep again. I do drink coffee but rarely drink it after about 10 a.m. I usually eat dinner between 6 and 7. I do not take sleep aids. I have trouble staying awake in the evenings and, in fact, don't watch much evening t.v. because of my propensity for falling asleep in the recliner. If that happens, I can count on trouble falling asleep when I'm in a proper bed.

On those rare occasions when I go to bed and sleep solidly for 6-8 hours, I feel much more energized. I just wish that it happened more often.

Hello, My name is Anne. I have had trouble sleeping all my life. Seems like I save up all my troubles to think about at night. Makes my mind race and sleep impossible. I am trying to learn to relax, quit with sugar and caffeine after noon, and quit taking sleeping aids. I usually take a half an ambien and that works quite well, but I would love to have natural and healthy sleep. I do sleep better the more I exercise so I am trying to fit that in as well.

Hey, I'm TammyShannen & I'm 26 - I have a few health issues that mess up my sleep. I also suffer from insomnia because of some of my meds.

I have had insomnia for my whole life. When I was born, I was a premie, so they had to wake me up in the middle of the night to feed me ... this habit continued well into grade school (getting up in the middle of the night for a snack - oatmeal & cream-of-wheat were my favorites).

I suffer from all 4 main symptoms of insomnia - trouble falling asleep, frequently waking up just before or right after entering R.E.M. sleep, trouble waking up, and tiredness and fatique durring the day. I have tried bedtime rituals, consistant bed times, and lots of other things including meditation, self-hypnosis, new beds, new pillows, new lights, etc... but, while they might work for a few nights or maybe up to a week, I have yet to find one that keep working every night. Also, most of these techniques only work for one or two of the whole-sleep issues. (And yes, I have tried to combine the ones that work, but I have a hard time remembering to do everything everytime).

I do not have sleep apnea, but I do suffer from allergies which cause me to snore sometimes. However, since losing some weight, I don't snore nearly as often as I used to ^..^......

Ok, I'll wrap this book up now. LOL - I'm willing to work hard to find ways that help ME get a great nights sleep (consistantly)..... Thanx for letting me ramble ^..^

HUGGLES!!!
~Kitty~

Hello,
My name is Dorothy. I'm 63 years old, retired and have been a SP member since Jan. 2007.

My sleeping habits are not good for weight loss. Generally, I go to bed anywhere from 1 to 2 p.m. and get up about 6:30 or 7:30 and no naps during the day. The reason I stay up so late is it's the only time I have to myself when my dh is sleeping. I love peace, quiet and solitude and this is the only time I can escape the blaring tv. I'm taking the challenge but may be hard pressed to accomplish all the goals. Never-the-less I'll do my best because I know how important it is.

Hi! My name is Martha; I'm 53. I turn off the lights at midnight and go right to sleep; but I wake up anywhere between 1am and 4am and can't seem to get back to sleep. I will take a melatonin pill and come down and sleep on my sofa, but I don't know if it's a good quality of sleep. I typically get up around 7am. I would love to sleep through the night and break this bad habit.

Martha

Hello,
My name is Pat. I am 35 for the 25th time. LOL I can not remember how many years it has been since I have slept more than 5 or 6 hours a night. I like many others will go to bed at 11:00 pm and I am back up at 12:30 or 1:00 and it goes on all night long. Usually but 6:30 to 7:00 I give up and stay up for the day. Of course yawning and tired all day long. I too and hoping to get some tips and help from this group.

Hi, my name is Leanne, I am employed full time as an Administrative Assistant usually the office is very quiet except for the occasional phone ringing. I know I am not getting enough sleep. I am up 5 days a week at 4 Am to go to the pool to swim an hour before I get ready and go to work. I am getting only about 6 hours of sleep at night and find myself having trouble staying awake by late afternoon or evening. Would like to get into a routine so I get a couple more hours of sleep a night. I am hoping this challenge will help me get into that routine.

Hello my name is Melinda, I'm 37, and i really need to develop better sleep habits. It always takes me at least an hour or more to fall asleep after i go to bed and often i awake an hour or two later and have trouble going back to sleep. Then in the morning i can't seem to wake up and it takes hours before i feel like i can function. I'm really hoping that this challenge can help me to refocus myself and get those very important full night's sleep.
