Hi I am Thelma and my goal is to attain better sleep habits. I tend to fall asleep on my couch and then wake up anytime between 1 to 3 am and won't fall asleep again for a couple of hours. I want to get in the routine of going to bed at a decent time and waking up at a good time. In attaining this goal hopefully I will get the required amount of sleep needed in the night.

Hi, my name is Amanda. I'm 27 years old and work a job that requires me to be up at 6 AM each morning. My husband and I have conflicting schedules and really only have nights to spend time together, so a lot of times I sacrifice sleep to hang out with him. I want to change my sleep habits so that I can be more productive at work, and life in general.

Hi, i am Georgine, just happened to find this challenge and hope i can keep up with it as joined some others. I have nites when I can't stay awake while reading in my chair, then I go to bed and am wide awake or I fall asleep right away and wake about 1:30 and then, with both situations, i can't fall asleep again til around 4. Not fun on work days when my alarm goes off at 5. I have tried wine, milk, reading, but no sleep til nearly 4. I do take an anithistamine at nite for itching but even then I will get these nites where I am up til 4. Frustrating!!!!

Hi, I am Jess just turned 30 and in need of a lifestyle change. I have a problem with staying up too late, exercising late, and eating late. I have slowly been working on changing around my schedule. This caught my eye it will keep me in check and I will have to hold myself accountable. I joined last night and started my journal.

I am a mom to two active preteen boys and sleep is one thing I need to improve. I know it is related to my weight gain and blood pressure increase. For my birthday I got a body bugg type device which measures quality and quantity of sleep. My quality is fine but the quantity runs from 5-6 hours. Obviously, I could use more than that.

Hello,
I need to focus on sleeping better and more consistently so that the rest of my life is better and more consistent! It's been chaos this year, and I'm sick and tired of being tired and chaotic. Lack of routine around my bedtime and rise time is a big factor, I think.

Hey everyone - just found this team and signed up, looking forward to reading more and learning more about it.

I just posted on a "Night Owl" thread some information about me:

I work 4 pm to 12:30 am, get home at 1 am at the earliest, and since my job is pretty mellow my drive home is usually when I start to really wake up for the day. I usually end up doing anything (important or not) after work, keeping me up until an average of 4 am, but sometimes even as late (early??) as 6 or 7.

I've tried to NOT do stuff after work, just chill out and sleep and save it for the next "morning," though usually end up sleeping in to the point where I only have enough time to get ready and head to work.

I'm now stuck in this rut of endless procrastinating and very sporadic sleep hours. Not to mention the problems with my social life! If something happens before noon on a Saturday or getting up for church on Sunday pretty much feels impossible. Even if POSSIBLE, doesn't sound much fun if I'm just going to be tired and yawning the whole time...

I retired early (am now 57) and have been so busy, I found that I need to work on getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Granted there will be an exception, but meeting this goal 5 or 6 times a week would be appreciated. While I may learn otherwise while being in this team, I'm fine if time to occasionally work in a nap were to compensate for a shorter sleep night. Right now, I don't seem to make time for naps.

Hi - I'm a 56 year old that thinks maybe admitting that I can't get by effectively on 5 - 6 hours of sleep like I have to the past 20 years. I'm frequently tired and cranky. I have no problems falling or staying asleep usually - just don't spend enough time there because I feel like I am wasting time. emoticon

Hi, another Linda here. Soon to be 62, retired but working part time nurse.
I have never been a good sleeper, mom said I never slept well from the day she brought me home from the hospital.
That said, menopause tipped it over the edge. I tried hormones but after trying to get off them several times, finally did a controlled taper 15 months ago.
I rarely sleep more than two hours at a time, often it is a hot flash that wakes me up, but sometimes it is just habit. Strangely, I often wake up and wander the house for a while and THEN have a hot flash.
I am currently taking a half an ambien (generic) but it doesn't keep me asleep, only helps me get back to sleep. And a whole one does not work any better, so I take a half and then take the other half in the middle of the night.
And sometimes I just zone out, I think I am just so tired but I don't nap.
Interesting that I find that something I poo pooed with my dad is happening with me. I wake up every two hours until early am then fall back in a sound sleep, best sleep of the night, but then DH wakes up, or his CPAP makes noise or the phone rings or on and on and on. And I am a night person so typing this at 12:07, wide awake.
I'll try anything, thanks.
Linda

I'm Linda also 50 with 2 adult children and about to become a grandma.
I used to be an 8 hr/ night person. Then I stayed up with the kids in their teens. Now I stay up with my DH. Even when I am overtired. I need the sleep. It sure does hurt the weight loss efforts.
Unfortunately I am the one with the snoring, but DH never mentioned it. The kids on the other hand had no trouble telling me... So I am looking for ways to combat this/ change my ways.

Hi Everyone, I'm Paul, and I have periods of very irregular sleep. When the seasons change and there are hot and cold changes in the night, when my asthma is acting up, or when I'm having a bout of depression, my sleeping pattern gets out of whack and I have to reinforce my healthy habits to get back to getting enough quality sleep which for me is about 7-8 hours a night or 6 with a nap.

Things that have helped me are establishing a sleep routine, maintaining it even on the weekends, a ipod loaded with audiobooks when I find myself awake in the middle of the night and restless, avoiding watching tv late at night

Hi everyone. I'm Kim, 50 year old mother of 2 adult children that don't live with me, but my DH does and is a cronik loud snorer. He snores so loud the girl in the next apartment can actually here him and he wakes her up. LOL. Boy do I need this team. I get my best sleep from 5:30 am (when he gets up) until 8:30 to 9 when the arthritis gets so painful I have to get up. Needless to say I walk around around with one eye open and yawn about a zillion times a day. I'm sure this is working against my weight loss efforts but like all challenges I know I am willing to find ways to beat it. Anyone tried ear plugs? emoticon

Hi, I am a 3.5yr breast cancer survivor treated with surgery, chemo and radiation. During my active treatment period I had problems with sleep and took a prescription sleeping pill for a number of months. This summer I was diagnosed with early stage Parkinson's Disease. At times I have trouble falling asleep but find that if I have walked that day I am less likely to have trouble. I often wake up very early like 4:15am this morning and then am unable to get back to sleep. This effects the way I feel the next day. I will work through this program hoping that there is improvement available.

I am a retired nurse, married, mother of 2 and grandmother of 6.

Hi, I'm Sheila. My problems with lack of sleep derive from staying up into the morning hours. There are times where my legs are aching severely and it prevents me from getting to sleep and/or awakens me during the night. However, the majority of the time I just get preoccupied with different things I want to get done and/or the computer. I have to be honest, my biggest problem is I'm just accustomed to staying up late. I started this habit so that I had some me time, or at least that's what I told myself. Whenever I've tried to go to bed earlier I just can't sleep. Most times I end up sleeping on couch to prevent waking my DH in the early am. Now we're both accustomed to sleeping separately so whenever I try to go into bed early it is so out of ordinary that I just can't fall asleep. One of my goals is to get to bed on time...that will mean putting the laptop away earlier and reorganizing my day to get any of household chores done during the day.

Hi- I'm Sue (Gaelic: Siusaidh), a wife & grandmother in Western NY. I DON'T LIKE to go to bed!! And I'm busy enough that this is very easy for me to do! I used to like to stay up late because that was the only quiet time in the house, and only time for me, when the kids and DH in bed. Now DH & I have our own place. In fact, we had such a difficult time sleeping together we chose to have separate bedrooms. He has medical issues, has to be up at 0400 for work, and goes to bed about 7:30 pm or so. I like to be up late and get up around 0600 or so. I got very used to functioning with very little sleep and not being very tired during the day. I am very active and no, I don't nap. I am pre-hypertensive, was drinking a lot of wine and was up to 202 lbs. My memory was waning. My weight is down now, active and abstaining from all alcohol. I feel great. I'm envisioning success for good this time. I do know I need to go to bed more.

Hi, I'm Dawn and I have a problem with getting enough sleep. I have to be awake by 5:30 and I don't get home until 6:30. In order to get 8hrs I would have to be in bed asleep by 9:30 which will never happen. I'm usually in bed by 11pm but sleep comes later and I wake up several times during the night. I think I deal with only 6hrs if I didn't wake up so much. Well I'm going to take this challenge!

Hi. My name is Stela and I've struggled with fitting in exercise in my busy life - I have 3 children, two of them under 4, work full time and have very little help with the kids and at home. Only way I figure I can get in a workout is if I do it first thing in the morning. Only problem is getting up early. I'm hoping I can develop a better sleep pattern and find the energy to get up early.

Hi!
My name is Tammy. I was delighted to see this challenge, because I have struggled alot with sleeping in the last year. I have pain issues related to a new diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis this year...pain that would hurt with every move in the bed...I feel I am finally coming around the bend and headed UP the mountain with new meds and lots of prayers! I had foot surgery in Aug and am healing, but slowly.Still have cast on, but can get around. I had a OMT (osteopathic manipulative )treatment yesterday, and hubby gave me a great deep massage...I slept like a baby last night for the first time in months! I am looking forward to more ways that will help me sleep and be better rested for the day! I have found if I am tired, I am more prone to eat mindlessly......My goal with this challenge is to increase to a more restful sleep! Looking forward to snoozing with the best of ya! heheh!

My name is Debbie and I have been struggling with getting enough sleep for many years. I had a sleep test done in 2009 and discovered that I have RLS, and a mild form of sleep apnea. So I was put on oxygen at night, and given a prescription for zolpediem. When I had the sleep test done in '09 my RLS was not bothering me much. Since I have lost 70 lbs, I had another sleep test done about a month ago. Still have the mild sleep apnea and the RLS and it has been bothering me so I now have a prescription for that. I cannot fall asleep unless I take the zolpedeim. I have tried going with out and I stay awake for hours. But I have been able to cut my dose in half but I still have to take it every night. It does not give me a solid amount of sleep. I wake up several times a night and go to the bathroom. I am on 2 liters of oxygen while I sleep and I can tell when my machine is malfunctioning and I am not getting the proper amount of oxygen. Anyway, I am hoping to gain knowledge and skills to help me get to sleep without the drugs.

Hi, I'm Peggy. I've been on and off SparkPeople for about 4 years. One thing I've discovered about myself is that when I don't get enough sleep I eat more, am grumpier and can't remember anything. Also it is possible to build a sleep debt from having too little sleep over a long time. So I'm taking the challenge to try to develop better habits so I can lose more weight fast and feel better.

Hi, I'm Beth and recently off caffeine. I feel tired A LOT! I try a lot of things to stay upbeat, but I think my sleep may be the culprit. I joined this team to see what kind of sleep I may be missing out on and to learn better habits.

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now.
200 plus lbs lost without surgery, crazy diets, or extreme exercise- so have hope!

Hi,
I"m Frances and I know how important sleep is to a healthy lifestyle - I just have difficulty getting it consistantly. I've had a goal of 7 hours, but don't always make it. I have my alarm on my phone set for 9:45 to make me aware of the time so I start heading to bed by 10.

Hi my name is Amy and I have always had trouble sleeping at night until I was recently put on Ambien. I am hoping through this challenge I can find ways to help myself sleep better without the need of medication. As a mother of 5 I need good sleep just to get through my busy days, but I do not want to depend on medication for this.

Hello, My name is Amanda...I'm 26 and a stay at home mom to a 7 year old daughter. I have always loved to sleep, and so I tend to sleep alot...but it is in intervals...we go to bed about 10, usually takes me an hour to fall asleep...then I wake up at 1 or 2...then husband is up at 4...then I wake up again about 5...toss and turn to get the last 30 min of sleep...then hubby gets me up at 5:30 so we can get ready for the day...my husband and daughter leave for work and school at 7 and I am so tired by 11 I try and nap till 1:30 when I have to go pick up my daughter...sometimes I have to take another nap just to make it through the day around 3 or 4....I have tried staying awake all day with no napping to sleep better at night...but no luck...I sleep worse and I am grumpy all day...so hopefully I can do this challenge to see where I am going wrong...and maybe talk to my doctor about sleeping....real sleeping! :)

Hi! I am Cherry and am looking for some quality shut eye. So tired! I have already lost 45lbs with Spark People since July and love the program.

I am Canadian but travel to the US weekly for work, then back home on weekends. I sleep in hotels, and eat out at restaurants - my healthy living change has resulted in some pretty big choices on the road. I work out every day and stay within my calorie range (on Spark).

mmmm sleep.

Hi everyone! My name is michelle and i've been on spark for a few years now on and off. Well hate to state the obvious but i'm joing this team to help me sleep better. I have a sleeping problem! I'm a sleepaholic. I love to sleep but i hate getting to sleep. A normal night for me would be going to bed between 12 and 1am and needing to wake up by 6am and obviously i can't do it. Literally I can't, if i haven't had enough sleep my mind wont register anything so i can't hear my alarm go off (how convenient right).I've tried a lot of things to help me sleep, and some nights i cheat with a little valerian root. Plus I work 2 jobs and one of them i don't get off of until 9:30 and its and hour drive home so unless i go to bed right when i get home... keeping a schedule really sucks.

Hi! I'm just starting out on my weight loss journey...well...starting out on "this time" :) Anyway, I've suffered from insomnia for most of my adult life. I know sugar, caffeine, and eating before bed compound the problem. I'm looking to develop better sleep habits, and to go to bed earlier.

Hi- I'm new and I think this will help to get more sleep just by being among others who need sleep, too.

Hey everyone! My name is Jesse and I have awful sleep patterns. From going to bed at 4am to sleeping in four hours shifts, I'm hoping this challenge will help me get my sleeping under control. Good luck to all.

Hi - I'm Rita. I am not new to SparkPeople, but I did have a lapse in participation. My sleep habits are not terrible, but they could be a lot better. That is why I joined this team. I am looking forward to being a member.

Hi everyone! My name is Ashley and I'm new to this team. I've been with Sparkpeople since February and so far I've lost 20 lbs. I'm about halfway to my goal and I'm hoping that getting more sleep will help! My biggest problem is that my husband is an insomniac. Since he has trouble falling asleep he stays up late because to him there's "no point trying to sleep early". So we end up in bed around midnight and his alarm goes off around 5am. I can't go back to sleep after that so I'm stuck with 5 hours of sleep and barely functioning. I'm hoping that I can help him overcome his insomnia so that we can both sleep better!

Hi my name is Teri and although I have always had problems going back to sleep once I have been awakened I have gotten so much worse now that I worked graveyard for 18 months. Now I have had to train my self to go from cat naps to full sleep. It has been a year and I am just getting to the point that I can sleep 4 - 5 hours at a time. Although I know all the "stuff" now I need to learn to put it into action! Help! emoticon

I'm Judi and I've been a Sparker for quite some time and didn't even know about the sleep challenge but I seriously need some consistent emoticon .

I am 49 years old and have chronic migraines and major depression. I just saw my psychiatrist this week and he said my psych meds could be causing my sleep problems but my mood is very stable now so we don't want to change them because I tried to commit suicide less than 18 months ago. It's a vicious circle, the lack of sleep triggers the migraines and the pain drives the depression.

Anyway, I am happily married with three cats. I am 1/3 the way to my weight loss goal after many attempts. I am getting regular exercise, including yoga for relaxation. I know I should make meditation a part of my daily routine, and maybe this challenge can help me do that.

Wishing you love, peace, joy, and blessings, Judi

Hi my name is Lauren. I am new to the team, not to SP.

Up until a couple of months ago I was struggling with extreme insomnia. I changed jobs and realised the stress I had been under. Now I am sleeping much better.

I have anxiety issues and they regularly effect my sleep. I am looking for strategies to be in better control over my sleep patterns and have good habits to support that for when the high stress hits.

hi i'm alunya
i'm new to sparkpeople.
i've always had trouble sleeping and have always had some 'form' of insomnia. as a child i would wake up earlier and earlier each day by 5min...doesnt sound like much but if your 10 and making up at 4 it sucks.
ive always been an EXTREMELY light sleeper....i just doesnt matter i wake up to any kind of slight noise. i'm 30 and i really dont know for how long but i've been having trouble getting to bed....i can be dirt tired but just cant sleep. usually i go to bed at 11pm and lay there playing my nintendo ds sudoku in the dark til my eyes get tired.

Hi
My name is Jean. As of this coming Tuesday, I will be 70. Mother of 2 and grandmother of 3.
I have been with SP since April 20th but just started in this group because I suffer with sleep apnaea.
I notice that I am not as tired since starting to be consistent with exercising.
Due to allergy stuffiness, I haven't used my C-Pap machine for over 4 months but know I need to get back to using it.
I am from British Columbia doing volunteer Mission work but our home is in Ontario and eventually, we will be moving back there to be closer to our family.
Looking forward to meeting all of you.
Jean

One of my goals from “The Spark” this week is to get adequate sleep so I thought this would be a perfect place to do that!

Some nights I have no trouble falling (and staying) asleep, other nights it’s a chore getting to sleep or falling back to sleep after waking up.

I also don’t have a good sleep routine. Most week nights I go to bed between 11 PM-midnight and get up at 7:30 – 7:45.

On the weekends I go to sleep anywhere from 11 PM to 2-3 AM and wake up between 9-11 AM.

I have been a night owl most of my life and I love sleeping in. I could sleep the day away if that “wasted day” feeling didn’t prevent me from it.

I’m not much of a napper because I often feel groggy and slightly nauseous upon waking and feeling that way once a day (when I get up in the AM) is enough for me.

Anyway that’s me sleep history in a nutshell!

I have a natural hourglass shape and I really want to keep that but I don't want it to jiggle -stacey, thintervention

Hi, I'm Ruthie from the Philadelphia, PA area.
I would like to change my sleep habits from chatting on the computer until midnight to going to bed on time, and getting a good night's sleep.
My goal is to go to bed every night by 10:30 PM.
In the book of Psalms it says, "It is vain for you to rise up early,To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.Psalm 127:2
I want to claim God's promise every night and enjoy His restful gift of sleep.
God bless
