I do raised bed and some container gardening---know what you mean about back not being able to take it---my knees would not handle down on the ground. Cone join in on the chat---Over the Backyard fence---we do a new one each month. Any tough questions just go to the Ask the Expert topic---get great advice from master gardeners there.

Hi - my name is Jineane . I have been a member of Spark People since June 2010 and I just keep plodding along here. I am 61 years young and suffer from osteo-arthritis and have had both knees replaced. I like to crochet, garden, read, listen to music, laugh, and eat. I am single with 2 cats whom I spoil rotten. When my father passed away in 2008 I moved in with my mother (who is now 95). We have a good sized yard and since my knee replacements I have been enjoying getting out into the garden and getting dirty. I would like to make it well into my 80's or 90's, so that means establishing a healthy weight and making exercise and activity a part of my life style. I look forward to joining in the fun and learning a bit more about plants and gardening.

Yvonne, glad you joined me here. What a great use of an found object. Good that you have mint in a contained unit as it will spread rapidly. You should post that question about the mint leaves under the Ask the Expert topic. You will get a great answer or 2 on there.

Hey, you all. My name is Yvonne and the Witchy comes from my bd being on Oct 31. I started a great container garden this year and have loved spending time in it. I found an old build in shelves on a walk one day and brought it home. Painted it yellow and started growing veggies.

An old picture but you get the idea. I need to learn about drying my herbs to use through out the year. How about mint? Can I dry it to make tea?

Sure, you can use the flower photos. The reds are dahlias (annuals here in MN). The iris came from a heap of rhizomes in a pile of weeds at my compost site. I grabbed them to see if they'd come up and what they'd look like. They're a true blue. I took both pix one rainy Spring day. Hugs.

Hello Everyone! I'm a mud-pie maker from way back, so it makes sense that I would want to join this team. You'll find me outside, usually barefooted, playing in the dirt as much as possible. I feel like more of a farmer than a gardener. I love my little third-acre, and have taken down trees, propagated shrubs, and transplanted everything. I move plants like furniture. One thing I enjoy is taking photos of my flowers. I'll post some from time to time.

I've been a casual Spark person for many years. This summer I decided that if I joined a team, it would bring me back daily and remind me that I want to be healthy. My goal this summer has been to get off colas and to teach myself food balance and proportion. I'm doing okay, mostly because I've been going slowly. I'm also eating simpler and trying new recipes. Being outside keeps my mind off munching.

I'm looking forward to check-ins and sharing info! Thanks,
Skabetti (Kris)

Hi, my name is Jessica. I have been with Spark People since 2007 approximately but just recently started gardening. I am still looking for work since I graduated with my BA in 2013 after 14 years of college. My doctor told me to find a hobby to help me distract myself from the stress of job hunting, etc. Therefore, I am trying gardening as a hobby.

emoticon I joined SP in January 2008 and have loved gardening for over 40 years. I was born and raised in Upper Michigan. After living in Upper Michigan for the first 29 years of my life, my husband & I moved to Wisconsin in 1985 and lived there for another 29 years. Last year we moved to Iowa to be closer to our daughter, son-in-law & 3 grandchildren.

It's a delight to garden in Iowa...roses love it here!

We have kind of done the same thing here---there is a back alleyway behind our house and the city did come thru and cleared it up somewhat of all the overgrown stuff---we are the only ones that are maintaining that area behind our house so we kind of think of it as an extension of our yard. I know we will be interested in howing how your weather and gardens compare with ours. Come join in on the chat as we love to hear from other parts of the world. We used to have a girl from New Zealand and we have a guy from Australia who posts at times---it is so interesting to see how other areas of the world grow things and what things are popular in their gardens. Any tough questions post on the Ask the Expert topic where you will get some great help. Welcome to the team.

I'm Ceviz from Rotterdam, Holland. I used to have a large garden, but since I moved to another part of town I only have a small yard. Still, I grow my own vegs and herbs. I'm planning to make my garden a little bigger every year by gradually taking over some of the public space adjacent to my patch. So far without protest from the local authorities. I hope to find some tips and advice about urban gardening here.

Hi, I've been on spark people for almost two weeks now and it works so much better than the "lose it" app I used to use. I grow plants every now and then, usually during spring and summer. I like to grow tomatoes, all kinds of berries (peppers mostly), sometimes other plants like corn, herbs or flowers.

"Very few people REALLY seek knowledge in this world, few really ask. On the contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the answers they have already shaped in their own minds - justifications, confirmations, forms of consolation without which they can't go on. To really ask is to open the door to the whirlwind. The answer may annihilate both the question and the questioner." Marius, The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice

Dottie, sounds like a good class to take. Weather can play havoc on our gardens. But it is fun to experiment. I have had success and failure when I have tried different things---but that is part of the fun. Come join us on the chat---and esp. share things you learned in your class once it starts. If you have any questions, Ask the Expert is the best topic to post on as we have a Master Gardener who monitors that and gives us great info there. Glad you have you on the team.

Hello all, I was excited to see this team on SparkPeople. I Don't know how much gardening I will be doing this summer as I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, but look forward to reading the strings and gather information for future years.

HI, I'm a newbie here at Spark People. I hope I'm putting this in the "right place". If not, please redirect me. This looks like an organized group, I appreciate that. I'm not sure how to create the little progress chart at the bottom of your "response boxes", can someone enlighten me on that? Thanks.

Hello gardeners! I am Sally, trying to lose weight, have lost 15 pounds on "Reboot with Joe Cross", juicing. That was great, but the instant I started eating whole, raw foods, I haven't lost another ounce (well, the first one yesterday). I think I'm in starvation mode, have to get used to the whole food routine. I don't think I was getting enough protein on the juice although I loved it, and will do it still, maybe once a day. Does anyone know how to calculate the juice on the tracker? I put every single item in, and know that isn't correct, a all of the pulp is eliminated by the juicer. Any tips are welcome, I'm transitioning, have not "cheated" at all, no sodas, no alcohol, no sweets, no fast food, no Mexican food (sigh), for 45 days. I'm about ready to "bust out" some times, but reading here on Spark People is helping lots! I have a knee replacement, so exercise( and gardening) has been hard to come by for a couple of years (a year in advance while they tried to figure what was "wrong", and the year since, dealing with stretched ligaments that do not retract, my knee is "wonky"). I have been dismissed from physical therapy, and have joined a circuit training center, like "Curves". I was afraid that I could not do that, but it is OK, I'm pretty sore still after a week and 4 visits. I can't use one of the machines, instructed by the physical therapist to avoid. I try to walk daily, have a dog who insists, and I have and use an exercise bicycle. I'm really not wanting to give up my former very physically active life style, gardening, hiking, walking 10,000 steps a day, doing whatever I wanted with no physical limitations. So, I have several issues here, but carrying groceries up the steep front steps made my knee hurt more, I figure lose weight and my knee should not feel as sore. Yes, I am overweight, need to lose 15-20 more pounds to be healthier, fit into favorite clothes, and to feel better about my appearance. I hang around with younger people, and I need to keep up! I'm open to suggestions on all counts! Sally

Hi. I am new to gardening. So far I have planted flowers such a violas, marigolds, and alyssum in the flower bed. I planted star jasmine and stargazer lilies in pots on the patio, and veggies in our garden bed. So I'll see how everything goes this year. I'm keeping a gardening notebook so I can track how everything grows here.

Hi, Yvonne!
I just joined this group, too, so we'll learn together. I have a similar climate to yours in the high desert north of Reno, NV. We're not quite as hot, but certainly dry. I've had good luck using containers I made following the Earthtainer directions (you can find them online). They're pretty easy to build using Rubbermaid tubs. It's an investment at first with all the potting mix you need to buy (well, it was for me since I have 11 of them), but then it's fairly minimal in subsequent years. They're basically self-watering containers (like the Earthbox, but bigger), so you just have to add water. I set mine up with a drip line going to each, so I just hook up the hose to the end and it adds water to all of them at once. I've grown all kinds of stuff in them, from tomatoes, beets, parsley, flowers, you name it. I have five that have trellises on them for climbing stuff. I'd recommend you check the directions out & give it a try. Works for me.

Sue

emoticon Tough conditions there for growing, but maybe you need to think out of the box and grow what to you would seem odd season---are your temps mild at other times? then they are the growing season to try. You could try container gardening---some plants like tomatoes do well in containers, but maybe on wheels where in the extreme heat of the day, they could be rolled into shade areas for a portion of the day. Glad you joined---maybe post your problem under Ask the Expert and our master gardener can come up with some articles that will help you. Thanks for introducing yourself---my gd turned 6 on the 15th and grandkids are the best!

Hello everyone, my name is Yvonne, I live in Ft. Mohave, AZ with my husband, our two cats Jack and Myaha and three dogs Chloe, Abby, and Sophie. I have a wonderful daughter and son-in-law and a beautiful grandson who just turned 4 on April 18th. Since moving to AZ in 2010 I have not attempted to grow any type of vegetable garden because of the extremely high temperatures in the summer, most days from mid May to late Sept. are 100+ degrees. I have a screened in patio and thought of trying to plant some type of container garden, but not sure how successful it would be. I always had a big garden planted every year in CA and sure do miss all the fresh vegetables. Any help or suggestions would be great. emoticon

I am Angilia, the proud Mom of a 16 year old son. Very new to gardening, but this is my new hobby.

In July of this year, for the first time, I planted red onions and garlic I seeds in my backyard. I had no idea if I was watering too much or too little. But, about a month ago, I observed my gardener grab an onion and eat it. :o) - Yes! That told me that I had done something right.

So... last night after I work, I pulled them out of the ground. I could not believe how strong home grown vegetables are. I will purchase more seeds and plant other things.

Hi, I'm Barbara. We've had a nice warm week finally! emoticon My Irises are poking out of the ground, yay! I'm going to dig some of them up to take them with me when we move to our new home in May. I'm so glad I found this group. The new home we are going to be moving to has two fully matured trees which are starting to bud. I can't wait to see what kind of flowers they have! I'm so excited. I've always wanted a blooming tree emoticon With a new home, comes a new yard, so I'll be picking you ladies' brains!

Hello Everyone!

I found this group and knew it was the right one for me. I love to garden. I grew up eating veggies from the garden. The veggies you get in the store don't compare.

I live in Iowa city, IA where it is a whopping -14 degrees tonight. Believe it or not I just ran out of fresh kale in my garden.

I am also a quilter and started college last fall at the age of 49. Wow have things changed since I was last in a class room.

Hope to meet all of you soon!

Bonnie

My name is Debbie, I just turned 61 on Christmas Eve, and I'm doing my best to feel more healthier and lose weight. I have already made improvements to my cholesterol levels and my blood pressure, which has always been a heavy concern to me. I also have been able to walk up a stairs and up a hill without breathing hard. I hate to exercise, but I know if I don't continue to push myself to the gym, I'll start to have health problems. So my way of tricking myself to exercise is to say I'll just ride the bike for 15 minutes and see how far I'll go with exercising on the other gym equipment. It seems to work and I talk to myself a lot convincing myself.

I live in Aloha, Oregon, where the weather is rainy, so I use the gym. I'm working on getting a stationary bike. I ready for the next challenge, so nice to meet everyone.

Deb

Keep saying I can do this!
