Yes, I do agree that killing two major characters is smart and good storytelling, but I personally didn't like it.

I liked Serenity. I agree, though, it really did strike a few different notes than the series. That's to be expected though. Movies are notoriously more "slick" than TV. And the series was leaving lots of questions hanging in the air - mostly those regarding River - whereas the movie gave a lot to you pretty much up front.

And, this is going to sound bad, but I think it was smart to kill of some of the main characters. Don't get me wrong, I was just as sad as anyone else when Wash got skewered, but it does pull that safety net out from under you for the rest of the movie (and possibly future stories as well??). If Wash and Shepherd can die, anybody can.

I didn't like the ending - killing two major characters was just such a downer. I think a lot of the wit was lost in the movie, but I would expect that since it's easier to do character development for a weekly series than for a movie. I thought the story was interesting - explaining the reevers.

I just liked the series SO much and was disappointed by the movie.

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you like Serenity after liking the series so much? My fiance just rolls his eyes when he catches me watching it AGAIN on cable. I own 3 copies so far: Regular, Special Edition, and HD-DVD. And don't think I won't buy it again on Blu-Ray when it comes out! More residual money for my beloved Browncoat cast and crew!

Thanks! What can I say, I'm a pretty general sci-fi geek... LOL Love, well, most of it, anyway. ;)

I'll be (hopefully) rejoning Netflix tomorrow, so I can start getting caught up. ;) Unbeknownst to the significant other, though...

"You wanna run this house??"
"Yes!"
"Well... you can't!"

Sound familiar? That's us pretty much every Thursday night. ROTFL Hope to catch up with you guys soon! ;)

Welcome Kristi! Saw you over on the BSG team as well. You'll definitely have to let us know your reactions after you've seen Firefly. It'll be fun to discuss the episodes. :-)

Thanks for the welcome, Kathy! Unfortunately, I'm grounded from buying anything TV or sci-fi related... DH says either I can get a couple of box sets and DVD's, or go to the con's I've promised friend's I'd meet them at. BUT... heheheh I'm saving on the side. ;) And Firefly is SO on my list. 'Course, my list is long, but it's one of the smaller sets, so it'll be one of the first, too. Anyway, thanks again for the welcome!

Welcome, Kristi!

You like Serenity, you are by definition a browncoat. You are one of those very fortunate browncoats who still have 14 brand new to them episodes of Firefly to see. I am so jealous! It is incredible to see for the multi hundredth time, but the first time was special.

You might want to consider purchasing your own set of Firefly dvds. Most people feel the need once they've watched the series.

Glad you came on board!

Kathy

OK, so I'll be up front, I've seen Serenity (one of the BEST movies I really think I've seen in a LONG time), but I totally missed Firefly on TV. :( So, while I'm not technically a browncoat... I hope you let me join!! Firefly is FIRST on my list when I get DH to let me have Netflix back. (He cut me off when I filled up the entire que with Star Trek... I promised him I wouldn't do it again, mostly b/c I'm more interested in Firefly and Battlestar Galactica at the moment, but he doesn't need to know that... hehehe)

Anyway, I'm Kristi, I've been a member of Spark for about 2 years now. I completely lost my motivation, but I've got it back now, all at once. ;) And I'm ALWAYS excited to meet other sci fi fans. Hope ya let me stay!!
