Hello. I've been a member of SP for a long time, but unfortunately I haven't had the success losing weight that I'd like, but it's my fault. When I do everything I'm supposed to do, I lose weight. I need to find a way to make myself stick with it. I'm joining this team because I want to give the "anti-inflammatory" program a try. I've had RA for 14 years and take 2 strong meds to control. I can't complain, they've done a good job, but the last couple of years, my inflammation and sed rate have been up. I don't want to add a 3rd med but would love to see if diet could help. Any advice you want to share is welcome. I'm just starting to make my plan!

I too tend to sit too long and get all stiff - a little timer set for 45 minutes is helpful on some days- the purposeful getting up and walking, stretching, doing is good for me - Somedays I just ignore it though and it is hardest when I need it the most!! Wearing a pedometer is good incentive for me too - makes me take the long way around the house or the yard or where ever I am "Just to get a few more steps in!!! In the last couple years I have also gotten a new stationary bike and this spring a small rebounder for very gentle bouncing and to improve my balance - our living room looks like a local gym but this is life!!!

Yes, stretching and movement period; do not sit for any length of time to allow my body to get stiff. (Hope my goodie did not awaken you)

I copied this off my page as it explains it in detail. Does anyone else have such a condition?

ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS: That is the diagnosis given me when I was 28 years old! Was told by an Orthopedist that I would be crippled and in a wheel chair permanently in my forties and be disabled. I refused to accept that 'dooms day' sentence ..... After defying the crippling effects this brings, with my spine completely fused , I went through unbelievable pain and still have stiffness but ..... many years later, I continue working in health care full time, have centered my life around fitness and exercise and beat all odds!~A rheumatologist who treated me remarked, " whatever you are doing keep it up" ...(swimming and lots of walking)
I have been on Sparks 5+ years now and love it! ... Looking forward to connecting with fellow team members and do enjoy active teams.

I am Vanessa. I started using SparkPeople over a decade ago soon after I quit smoking. I lost weight, started running, ran some marathons, and all was well. And then a little over 6+ years ago I suddenly got very sick and it turns out I have a rare autoimmune disorder that acts and is treated like rheumatoid arthritis. RA is systemic inflammation. I have had a flare lately and evenings and mornings have been wretched while my rheumatologist and I figure out a new drug regimen. So, I've decided to start experimenting with some more holistic approaches to complement the western medicine such as yoga and an anti-inflammation diet.

I love fermented foods and kefir. Lifeway has a good kefir and most stores carry it.

I have gluten intolerance and have lost a lot of weight going gluten free. I had tried to lose weight for ten years and stayed in the low 300s for the most part. I am in much better shape now but have trouble controlling my blood sugar even though I eat lower carb.

Glad to have you on the team!

Hello, emoticon
I am new to the team but not to Spark or Dr. Weil. I have made lots of changes over the last few years (thank you SparkPeople) but I am still battling inflammation. I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis which is an autoimmune disease which messes with with my metabolism and stamina, as well as other things. I am gluten, soy and corn free. I am also allergic to nuts, So I have some challenges with the Anti-Inflammatory Diet but I am going to give it a try. I eat minimal processed food which helps me to control salt and sugar as well as things like preservatives. I love fermented foods, I have made kombucha and Jun but want to experiment with sauerkraut and fermented veggies. I have never tried kefir. I am really excited to be here and look forward to getting to know all of you and learning more about the Anti-Inflammatory Diet! emoticon

I am new to this team. I was going to try an elimination diet that the dietician gave me. I will use both that and this team to help. I have several chronic conditions including: osteoporosis, osteo-arthritis in my spine and knees and probably my ankles. I have been on and off with the weight loss. I need to lose 30 pounds. That would put me back to last years 190 pounds. I was actually less than 190, but it was medically related...so I don't count that weight.

I was active in this team in 2012 ... 5 years ago and so yesterday my Dr said the only way I can help present levels of arthritis without surgery is to go anti-inflammatory meds and/or lifestyle. So for the month of APRIL I will be hitting this learning curve and life style change big time. Doing a little prep work the next couple of days then hitting it full force on April 1 - will see you then with daily participation, learning and sharing the goods, bads, the uglies.

I am 68 yr, got two heart stents 5/2014, had major back reconstruction 12/2015 and then spent 12/2016 and Jan and Feb of this year mostly in bed and sitting with feet elevated for weird disease that Dr's still don't know why or if it will return. I lost all the strength and mobility I had gained after back surgery and have been rebuilding with seated elliptical, stair exercises and exercise bike - I start physical therapy in a couple weeks so am optimistic. I am celiac so gluten free, have only a few teeth so must be chopped fine, ground or cooked. I have peripheral neuropathy so have very little feeling in feet and lower legs affecting balance and walking abilities. Ready to learn, re-learn and progress to be the best health I can be - weight loss in mixed up in all of that too.

New here too, just joined today. Been battling sciatica, and feel awfully stiff. Going to doctor later this week, but figure the stiffness has to do with inflammation (we'll see if I'm right.)

At any rate, joining this team and modifying diet to both lose some weight and help with the inflammation.

I'm 57 year old male, overweight (need to lose 20-25 lbs this year).

Hi I'm new to this team. I'm a 70 yo divorced woman with 2 grown kids and 2 grown grandsons living in South Carolina. I want to lose weight of course but I also want to follow an anti-inflammatory diet for my auto-immune disease and for overall health and well-being. I will appreciate any help y'all can give me in how to do that. Thanks.

Hello, I am Paula a 49 year old married mother of two. Jake 21 and Sarah 20.

Currently weight in at 55.0 kilo's I aim to maintain at 52 kilo's.

I am Independent PartyLite Candles Consultant we do party plan Candles and home decor items and are the Worlds number direct seller of candles and home decor items.

I know I am not obese by any means but still for me I have too much weight on for my hips to carry around.

I have slight hip osteoarthritis in both hips. Doctors and specialists told me a few years ago I would need to have 2 hip replacements which I refused to have, or at least put off as long as possible. I am doing things naturally, fixing my diet, weight loss and the like.

I also have Scoliosis in my back have had it since I was a teenager. I wore a back brace then for 2 years which prevented it getting any worse.

My issues make exercising very difficult. So am unable to do much of that other than normal stuff like housework, gardening when I am able.

I try to eat healthy and organically where possible and avoid all preservatives and additives and processed food where and when I can. Plus I am wheat free not Gluten free & trust me when I tell you there is a difference between the two because there is.

I Drink reverse osmosis water from my water filter. Use Australian made and owned cleaning products that are non toxic and without any harsh chemicals.

I have interests in candles, reading, feng shui, computers, positive thinking, spirituality, new age thinking, Leptin Diet, Eat right for your type diet, soccer and gardening & beginning Sewing / quilting to name a few.

I believe it not a diet but a healthy lifestyle for the long haul.

Thank you for having me in your team I look forward to being an active member. emoticon

I'm Carol. I live in Michigan. I have not been put on an anti inflammatory diet by a doctor, but I am aware of the connection between inflammation and disease. I've been semi-successful since coming back to SparkPeople a couple of months ago - down and them back up a bit. Trying to find a diet that works for me that I can live with long term. I am interested to find out what is working for my new team members. emoticon

Hi!
I have been put on an ant-inflammatory diet by my doctor. I have reviewed the pyramid and noticed that I take most of the supplements recommended. My doctor wants me to focus on good fats and at least 5 colorful vegetables daily. In addition, I am to add yoga or resistance exercises.
I found this team by chance and it is my hope it will help me with my motivation and finding tasty healthy recipes.

I am following a 'Mediterranean' type diet and getting most of my fat from avocados, EVOO and nuts. I average more than 50g total fat/day, but 30g are monounsaturated. Might see what your nutritionist thinks about upping the total?

Hi Everybody,

I came across this group by accident, but checked it out. After exploring this group, I found that it'll be beneficial for me to join.

I suffer from Chronic Pancreatitis. This disease stopped my pancreas from producing the enzymes necessary to properly break down food for digestion. I now have to take Creon (made from digestive enzymes of pig pancreas) to properly digest my food. I take 24000 units (2 capsules) every time I eat something. The side effects from this has me taking Metoclopramide (to alleviate vomiting, nausea) when needed before meals, and Polyethylene Glycol (for constipation) when needed. My Nutritionist has me on a Low Fat diet, with other restrictions on food I can't eat. My total fat intake per day can't exceed 50g with less than 25g of saturated, trans, or cooking oils.

I know that some fat is needed in a daily diet, but most should come from plants. The list of the foods I can't have seems endless. I guess I was one of the many who ate mostly fast or prepackaged meals. When I began to look at the Nutrition Facts on things I still have around, I was shocked!!!! The calories from fat, total fat, saturated and trans fats, sodium levels, and sugars were very high. Then came the serving size. 1/2 cup serving contained all those nasty things I mentioned. The really sad part is servings per package. a 16 oz package contained 4 servings. I know I could eat the entire package with ease. I then realized that what my Doctors and Nutritionist were telling me are true. I guess that's why my "can't have" food list is endless. LOL!!!!!!!

So, here I am at SparkPeople in hopes of gaining valuable info, advise, and support from others here. I guess I really brought nothing to this group, other than my wiliness to change. Should I find something to give to you all, I'll gladly share it. I hope to hear from you all sometime.

I'm a believer in 'green' bags www.debbiemeyer.com/#!greenbags/c1jj

and have to admit I reuse them a lot more than 8-10 times. I'm also blessed that my frig has a drawer with dividers, so I can separate fruits (which seem to ripen faster) and veggies.
Seems that moisture is the enemy of keeping freggies fresh and the bags work perfectly as I can turn them inside out and keep a full batch for a week or more!

That sounds great! I know I used to throw out a lot of food in the past. Mostly leftovers or items that got stuck in the back of my fridge until I remembered they were there.
emoticon
Now that I'm paying more money for produce and fresh foods, I have started organizing my fridge better. I use little plastic bins from the dollar store to put my produce in. It makes it easier for me to just pull a bin out of the fridge and easily pull out the items that I need rather than having a produce bag of tomatoes roll into the back of the fridge and go bad before I remember they're there.
emoticon
We don't have a Sam's Club in our area, but we do have Costco and BJ's Wholesale, and their produce is always a good deal for a high-quality product, so I can see what you mean about Sam's produce being so good.

Cuppy - I am emoticon to admit I don't have a food budget, but as we shop @ Sams, I am not only getting the freshest produce in town, but also the cheapest.
We shop @ HyVee and they have Fuel Saver specials that generally cover meats and seafood, so while I may be paying full price, we are getting pennies off our gas bill. (Every little bit helps...)

Love that you are eating smaller portions! I have been freezing or refrigerating 1/2 of my Sams produce for later use and my food waste is practically nil.

Kaligirl, I'm doing the same. I can't say I don't miss a good creamy bowl of Kraft macaroni & cheese deluxe, but I'm hoping cravings will die down soon. :)

One of my concerns was that I'd end up blowing my grocery budget by only shopping the outsides of the grocery store and buying items that often do not have a coupon that can be used to bring prices down (meat is sooo expensive right now), but I've found that if I watch the sale ads each week and plan meals mostly around those items that are on sale, I really don't spend more than I was spending previously. I'm also finding that I feel full on smaller portions so I'm not eating as much, which leaves leftovers for meals. :)

Have you noticed a change in how much you're spending for groceries? Have you had to shop at different stores to keep your grocery budget from getting out of control?

I think we all might have eaten healthier if the availability of processed foods with high sugar and salt combos billed as 'convenience' weren't so readily available (or advertised). Now I shop mainly on the outside of the supermarket (produce, meats, dairy, wine) and am feeling much better too.

Greatly enjoying your success!

Thank you so much, Kaligirl! emoticon Seeing results so quickly like this and feeling the change in how I feel overall is helping me to see that this is the right type of diet to use. I wish I'd tried this sooner. :)

Oh Boy! I have an update. My doctor's office finally got back to me with the results of my blood work. Wow, it was so hard to wait through the weekend, and my mind was playing games and thinking, "They haven't called me yet...maybe it was so bad that they're not sure how to call and tell me about it. Maybe they're consulting specialists..." I just wanted them to call me and tell me that there was some sort of decrease in my WBC count. I knew I wasn't sick, but my legs were definitely inflamed with edema swelling (red, hot, swollen), and all of that swelling is gone now. I hoped that this was the cause of my WBC count being elevated and not something more serious.

I got my wish! In just one week (between my third ever-increasing blood test that showed the 15.1 reading and when I had my blood drawn again to recheck) of eating an anti-inflammatory diet, I was able to lower my WBC from 15.1 down to 11.9! The nurse said that 10.8 was the high end of the normal range for the lab they use. Everything else is completely within normal range.

I couldn't be more thrilled. For me, this was confirmation that eating this way is what my body needs to stay healthy. My weight is dropping so fast by avoiding certain foods that seem to cause my body to react and hold fluid, and I feel so energetic.

I'm nearly down into the 200's! Yay!

*Cuppy* :)

Kaligirl, don't beat yourself up over that yummy hotdog. It was a holiday. emoticon emoticon Have you had any trouble getting back to an anti-inflammatory diet since the 4th?

I had my blood drawn again yesterday at the doctor's office. I was hoping that I would get a call today with the results, but nothing yet. The nurse did surprise me yesterday by saying that the doctor wanted her to check my blood pressure while I was there. When I saw my primary care doctor, just a week or so ago, it was 149/100. I've been on the anti-inflammatory diet for the past week, and I was nervous but still eager to see if my blood pressure had changed. It has! 122/80! Yippie!!! On my way home, my doctor called me to say that he'd just been told my blood pressure, and he wanted me to keep doing what I'm doing because it's working! Yay!

Now I just have to hope that my blood work shows improvement also! So excited!! emoticon

Love that you are being so proactive and taking care of yourself.
I'm afraid I succumbed to the kosher hot dogs - they are my 4th of July and baseball game treats!

Thanks for the welcome Kaligirl! emoticon

I managed to get through the holiday weekend eating an anti-inflammatory diet, which means I passed up on all those traditional 4th of July foods like baked beans and potato and macaroni salads, and hotdog and hamburger buns, etc. How I did it, I don't know, but in the few days that I've been really sticking to this way of eating, I've really noticed that my legs are less swollen, and I feel better. I've even lost a few pounds, so I'm excited to keep going and see how my blood work looks later this week. I'm hoping that my WBC will be lower due to having less inflammation in my body.

Sounds like you are on the pat to a healthy life and love that you do your own research (I do too...)
We're not the most active team, but there are members here who can offer super advice.

Hi! I'm new to the team, and I am also new to the anti-inflammatory diet. I've heard about it before, but I've never actually looked into the details of it until a few days ago.

I have hypertension and blood sugar issues (currently A1C of 6.7, doctor wants it in the 5's), but my fasting blood sugar in the morning is always around 156-ish. The only other health issue I have is edema in my lower legs and feet, which I always figured was from the extra weight I was carrying. I'm around 305lbs currently.

During my annual GYN visit recently, my doctor took blood for a CBC test. It came back that I was slightly anemic, which my normal primary doctor feels is from being perimenopausal and therefore temporary, and also my WBC (White Blood Cell) count was elevated. The high end of normal for the lab they used was 10, and mine was 11, so it was only slightly elevated. That was taken on a Monday. The following Wednesday, I went back to her office for an ultrasound, and she had blood drawn again (so 8 days later), and it was 13.1. She asked me to come back the day those results came back in to do another blood draw (so the third test was 2 days after the second), and this one showed 15.1. She was concerned enough to send the results to my primary doctor. He called me and said that we will need to do a CBC on me, which is scheduled for this coming Wednesday.

So basically, my WBC has gone from 11 to 15.1 in 10 days. Not sure if that's a quick climb or normal or what. I've answered all sorts of questions on whether I have an upper respiratory issue, or have I had stomach flu symptoms or any other illness, and nothing. I feel absolutely 100% fine. I'm active and feeling good.

So I did research on what could cause a WBC to go up because in the past year, I have had another episode like this where my WBC went up for awhile, and then came down again like a mystery. What stood out to me was inflammation because like I said, I don't feel sick. My lower legs get warm and red sometimes when they are holding more fluid, and I've read that inflammation can lead to a lot of health issues like diabetes and hypertension, etc, so I'm trying to lower my inflammation in my body and hopefully that will bring my WBC down, at least closer to normal.

In addition, I would love to have a lessening of the edema in my lower legs and some weight loss too! :)

So far, I'm doing great. I'm craving diet soda and coffee creamer, but other than that, I'm doing well. :)

So great to be part of the team. Has anyone had their WBC go up due to inflammation?

Looking forward to learning more about what to eat and not eat to build up a bigger variety of foods that I can include in my meals.

Hi. I'm new to the team as of a few minutes ago. This afternoon I had a routine appointment with my doctor that I was actually looking forward to, knowing I weigh less than I did the last time I went. My bloodwork was pretty good overall, but could be better. My doctor is big on Paleo, which I just haven't been able to get into, but also recommended an anti-inflammatory diet. I don't know much about it yet, but am willing to give it a try.

MM11113 - Glad you are not into fast foods and I can relate with over-eating with batch cooking...
I love veggies, so have made batches of the cabbage soup recipe which actually has turned out good hot or cold and I can vary it according to the season.
I have a great book about monthly meal planning, but have yet to move in that direction.
Pretty sure I'd not only save calories, but money as well.
@ least I've bagged the Triscuits (my indulgence) into 6 cracker packs...

I guess, things could be a lot worse, I don't have a fast food thing. I make my comfort food and it doesn't lend itself to single servings. So, when I make a batch of chili, I have to have 8 to 10 containers ready to accept contents. And, then I have to limit myself to 1 serving. Things like that. I love pasta, too. But the real problem is that after about 18 months, I get sick of the same things over and over again. I read Spark Recipes today, and things sound great, but not 4 or 6 servings. I need to figure out the way to live as a single person, and not be dependent on Stouffer's single serving dinners. I read your long entries on types of things to eat, or not eat. I'm about half way good, I've added nuts and fruits. I didn't get heavy on fried foods. I just eat too much. I like to feel satisfied when I eat. I miss things like ice cream. And, I have to buy it in tiny cartons, or I eat until tomorrow. Enough of me!
