I love the fact that you want to get involved and reach out to others with the hopes of preventing health problems for them. Also glad you will start your screening early. Sounds like you have learned alot already and are doing a great job.

God be with you as you get involved in all this. You are wise way beyond your years and one to be admired :)

thank you to everyone for your uplifting words.

after i turn 25, i will be getting screened regularly (every few years) for colon cancer for early detection.

The doctors say my dad probably developed his cancer in his mid thirties. Which is way younger than we think of when we hear the word "cancer", especially colon cancer.

I've been encouraging all of my peers to remember they don't have to be grandparents or in that age range to deal with an end-of-life illness, and that NOW, when we're 20, is when we should look at our health.

i would actually like to either join, support, or start a campaign to help people in my age range understand that health isn't just something for our parents generation, not in regards to weight loss, but overall health that includes considering the outstanding risk for cancer and other serious diseases.

again, thank you all for your encouragement.

good luck to you in your fight for your future! i hope you'll share some of the tips you learn with us so we can all stay conscious of our choices. i too have a new thing to think about as breast cancer has not been known to run in our family until my aunt was diagnosed. now we have a history. i drink a lot of green tea now and i try to stay away from chemicals and processed foods. maybe we should start a cancer fighting tips thread?!

good luck!

Hi Tabatha,

So sorry to hear about your father passing away so young but glad to see you are on this site to learn how to get and stay healthy.

My husband turned 50 last Jan and just found out in Sept that he has prostate cancer so we, too, are working to get answers. We have done a great deal of research to learn what foods will fight cancer and which ones can cause the body to weaken and get sick. His mother died of colon cancer but she was in her early 80s but even knowing that, he hadn't been going for colonoscopys but he had one after they discovered the prostate cancer and thankfully, the doctor said there were no polyps and his colon looked very healthy.

Colonoscopys aren't fun (the day before as you prep) but at least now they can catch and remove polyps before they have a chance to turn cancerous so you might want to consider doing that every 5 years at least, just to play it safe. We all have to remember that even the young can get cancer and I believe all the processed foods, artificial sweeteners and not enough fiber contribute to these problems.

I'm 61 and remember how much healthier I was before the processed foods ~ and how much thinner I was. The body wasn't made to handle all the synthetic, artificial things and as my cousin says, if God made it, eat it. If man made it, avoid it. She started following that theory and even took up juicing and her health has improved tremendously the last 3 or 4 years.

God bless you and your family and give you strength through the days ahead emoticon

hello all.

Two weeks after my 17th birthday my 45 year old father died from colon cancer.

Because of how advanced my dad's cancer was, how young he was, and how relatively healthy he was otherwise, my siblings and i are at a 1-in-3 chance of getting the same cancer.

There are three of us siblings. That makes me, you could say, nervous.

So to fight statistics and I starting now, at 20 years old, to fight my own cancer before it ever has a chance to attack me, and to maintain an overall health that will allow me to continue sharing my dad's legacy for many more years.
