Thanks, but my roller rink is super close to where I live. Less than 5 minutes!! I chose this as opposed to driving 30 minutes to the nearest ymca/gym...simply because I knew if I had to travel that each time to workout, I wouldn't go!!
There is another rink also 30 miles away, but I don't plan on using it because of the distance.

Welcome! :)

If you tell me your general area, I bet I can find a derby team within 1 hour of you. Seriously! Roller derby is everywhere!

I hope you don't mind that I am just regular skating, not roller derby? I don't even think there is a roller derby team in this area...but it sounds interesting and this looks like a good place to meet others skaters.
I have skated when I was a kid. About 4th -6th grade. I remember really enjoying it even though I wasn't skinny. Though looking back I wasn't too big either. I owned my own skates and between my feet outgrowing them and I not getting another pair, and we moved (away from the rink I liked) I guess I quit skating by about 6th grade.
Thats been over 10 years and I was thinking of what would be a great exercise that was good for my body but fun & social. I wanted to meet friends/people. I came up with skating because I can move at my own pace.
Since going back to skating...I've been doing this for like 2-3 weeks now. I am not terribly bad and kind of got the hang of it.
I am struggling with my rental skates though. I don't think our rink really cleans & keeps up the skates like my previous rink did. Plus I am getting awful blisters-just from regular skating! So I am looking to buy my own pair of quad skates. I would like any tips on this. I can order them from my rink and I just need advice on what kind of skates are..."good". I don't need super high end skates, I probably will never speed skate or roller derby, just a pair to call my own, so I can break them in and not have to keep breaking a new pair of skates in each time-ouch to blisters!! Plus I notice all of the "good" skaters have their own pair of skates.
Also, do you have any idea how many calories I might be burning skating? The rink is open for 4 hours friday & saturday nights...now I probably don't skate the entire 4 hours. I really just skate the songs I like-this is what I did as a kid. Songs I don't like I stop and rest my legs. I learned on the first night that if I skated more than 5 songs I think my legs would get so tired I would keep falling. But then when I plug in 2 hours for each night into spark it tells me I burned too many calories...which may be true!!
Thanks for any advice and ideas!!!
